Jukebox Heroes: Dragon's Prophet's soundtrack
Considering the lack of chatter I've heard about Dragon's Prophet post-launch, I'm willing to say that this title's been having a difficult time gaining traction in the main MMO community. Gameplay aside, I was looking forward to this MMO's release because I hold Runewaker's Runes of Magic in high regard when it comes to its soundtrack. I was hoping for the same level of quality in Dragon's Prophet, and I really wasn't disappointed.
The OST was composed by Alex Pfeffer, Alexander Röder, Mindy Lo, and Rmoney Chen. It's a series of grand, stirring orchestral tunes that would be at home transplanted to just about any fantasy MMO that you're playing. Listening through it all, I found that it had a high ratio of quality tracks, so much so that narrowing it down to six picks proved problematic. I think I found a good balance, however.
1. Flicker of Life
Our first track of the day starts on a pretty low, melancholy note, sounding almost classical. It's definitely not a happy track, but I appreciate how the background almost sounds like an old-school 8-bit dungeon while the foreground pours its soul into this sad musical tale. To me, this track gets more beautiful as it goes on, especially as the flutes layer in toward the end.
2. Light's Path
Maybe I should have kicked off with this track instead -- what do you think? It's certainly got all of the elements of a "turn that puppy to top volume!" experience, with this tense, exciting rise of action as the strings and horns blare pure awesomeness. Really, I could have this play whenever I come into a room and my ego would be sated for life. 'Tis I! That guy! The one who won't shut up about video game music!
3. Rise of a Hero
There are a few "Rise of a Hero" tracks with different variations, but I'm going to stick to the plain vanilla version. I think this would be a good score to play for a superhero trailer. It's on the tad generic side; I've certainly heard this sort of song plenty of times before. But I'm willing to give it a pass because it's quite well-done and still pretty rousing.
4. Auratia
This track has "flight" written all over it, and perhaps "Harry Potter" too. Harry did stuff with dragons; I know that much. Maybe he played video games featuring them like most normal teenage boys. Anyway, I love this piece. It's very cinematic, it's crystal clear in its notes, and it takes a quick exit off of the stage once it's made its point. I can respect that.
5. Spark of Hope
I think one of the reasons I took to this OST is because it is, by and large, a very uplifting score. It doesn't make noise for the sake of noise, and it doesn't dwell in ugly tones; it just chooses to be stirring and unapologetically enthusiastic about its fantasy setting. Spark of Hope has a lot of power behind it, but that doesn't weigh it down; on the contrary, that's kind of the booster rocket that sends this tune skyrocketing.
6. Candlelight
Let's all curl up on the sofa and give this last track a listen while we sip mugs of hot cocoa. It's hard not to hear "Final Fantasy" or cathartic scenes in films in this track. Candlelight's short playtime oozes peace and tranquility without overstaying its welcome.
