SpiderOak unveils Hive, a streamlined file service with '100-percent' privacy

A new cloud-based file system from SpiderOak looks to challenge the likes of Dropbox with a bigger emphasis on privacy. Those familiar with SpiderOak know that the company has been offering a "100-percent private" file environment for some time; the company can't view any information about the files you upload, whereas other file-sharing sites can access users' data. The just-announced service, dubbed Hive, merges that encryption cred with a simplified interface. Hive utilizes one main folder for dragging and dropping files, and it automatically syncs data across your devices. Files, meanwhile, can be shared with friends or colleagues as links.

The latest update to the SpiderOak mobile app integrates with Hive to let you manage and view data; the Android version will leave beta on May 13th. As Hive is connected to the company's broader file service, it follows the same pricing plan: 2GB free or 100GB for $10 a month. For a limited time, though, new users can get 5GB when they sign up and download the app. Click through to the source link for more info.

SpiderOak Hive: Privacy Meets Simplicity Meets Mobility

Users Can Sync, Share, Backup Across Devices by Dropping and Dragging Files – in a Fully Private Environment

SAN FRANCISCO, CA-May 7, 2013 - SpiderOak, the 'Zero-Knowledge' privacy cloud technologies provider, today announced SpiderOak Hive, the first-of-its- kind, 100 percent private online file system. SpiderOak Hive automatically syncs data between desktops, laptops and mobile devices, enabling users to enjoy all the simplicity of a centralized dropbox without having to compromise privacy.

"We need to ask ourselves – does privacy really matter? And if so, what must we sacrifice to achieve it?" said Ethan Oberman, CEO of SpiderOak. "Hive builds on the 'Zero-Knowledge' privacy orientation of SpiderOak and places it into a very intuitive user experience. The end result is an extremely easy-to-use product that doesn't compromise user privacy and paves the way for a new, private online file system."

By dragging and dropping files into the SpiderOak Hive folder, users can keep their data securely synced, backed up and current across mobile phones, laptops, tablets and in the cloud. Furthermore, any file inside SpiderOak Hive can be shared as a link with the click of a button. As part of SpiderOak's overall 'Zero-Knowledge' privacy environment, any file or folder placed into SpiderOak Hive remains 100 percent private and visible only to the end user.
For advanced users, SpiderOak provides a robust application that gives full power and control to the user, who can select specific folders to back up, organize and sync operations between devices, and select folders across the backup set to share with friends, colleagues and/or coworkers.

SpiderOak Mobile 2.0

SpiderOak Hive will also be available through SpiderOak's newly designed iOS mobile application. Using the updated mobile app, users can navigate to files and/or folders inside of SpiderOak within seconds. When logging into the SpiderOak 2.0 mobile app, users will be able to easily view data in the Hive folder or on any of their registered SpiderOak devices, where they can immediately access all of their data, view it, and choose to share any file they wish.

SpiderOak mobile 2.0 was rebuilt from the ground up and includes significant usability enhancements, including a higher level of app performance. Users can now adopt a centralizedsync folder concept without compromising privacy. SpiderOak's Android app is currently in beta, with an expected release data of May 13th.

OS Integration

As part of the overall SpiderOak 5.0 launch, SpiderOak will now also include OS integration on Windows (with Mac and Linux coming in early Q3). This integration makes SpiderOak more visible and usable from Windows' native Explorer file system. Simple right-click functions enable users to back up and share files, as well as view historical versions. Further, any folder included in the backup set will bear a SpiderOak logo to remind the user that the data contained inside is safe and available wherever they might be.
