Roman Ruins HD lets you virtually explore the remnants of ancient Rome from your favorite chair using your iPad.
The Roman Empire spread throughout Europe and the Middle East at its peak, and you'll be able to see many of the sites where Rome ruled. The app supports aerial 3D views and guides to 350 ancient Roman sites. The app contains more than 1,500 images, and lots of text to explain the history of the ruins.
Where there is data available, the app incorporates Google Street View, which is a nice touch. The included images of the ancient sites are decent, but they are not National Geographic-quality. They appear to be derived from Creative Commons material, so some of the photos are not the best-looking images you might see. Overall, though, it's an excellent collection.
Many of the locations include the ability to pan in several directions, so you can get an idea what the site looks like in context with its surroundings. There is also a mode that supports the iPad motion sensors, so you can move around and the picture changes its view and perspective.
There are a lot of ways you can find the ancient ruins, with a map-based page, an index and a collection of similar sites, like amphitheaters or baths, for example.
There really is a load of information packed into this app, and I think that any history buff would find themselves fully immersed in the content. It's also a great app if you plan to visit any of the sites detailed. It's obvious there was a lot of work collecting the information for this app, and I found it worth exploring in detail.
If you are interested in Ancient Rome, I'd also suggest you look at Rome MVR, which shows you several ancient sites as they are today and what they looked like during the rule of the Roman Empire.
Roman Ruins HD is normally US$9.99, but it's on sale for $4.99 for a limited time. The app is iPad only, and requires iOS 5.0 or greater.
