New generation finally begins in summer with Tetris Ultimate
Let's face it, the new generation of consoles isn't really here until there's Tetris on them.
Tetris Ultimate is the latest-iteration of the iconic block dropper, and it's coming to Xbox One and PS4 this summer, followed by PC in the fall. It features multiplayer for up to four players (Ubisoft's wording indicates that includes online at least) and six self-descriptive modes, namely Marathon, Endless, Ultra, Sprint, Battle and Power-up Battle.
If that's as straight down the middle as the I-block, the way you keep up with friends does sound more L-shaped. According to Ubisoft, "Tetris Ultimate captures and saves your play style, allowing you to always be able to play with or against your friends, even when they are offline. If your scores get beat, view your friends' strategies via their in-game replays, then challenge and beat them."
The announcement arrives ahead of Tetris' 30th anniversary on Friday, June 6. Incidentally, there'll be officially organized meet-ups taking place worldwide to mark the game hitting the big 3-0. In other words, expect to see lots of photos this week of grown human beings dressed up as game blocks - as they darn well should be.

London, UK - June 4, 2014 - Today, Ubisoft® announced Tetris® Ultimate, the evolution of the world's most-loved puzzle game, will be available for digital download for the first time on Xbox One, the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft and PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system this summer to coincide with the 30th anniversary of Tetris, and will be available this autumn on PC.
With exciting modes, fun features and unique visuals, Tetris Ultimate allows 1–4 players to face off in six different game modes: Marathon, Endless, Ultra, Sprint, Battle and Power-Up Battle.
During this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Alexey Pajitnov, the creator of Tetris; Henk Rogers, managing director of The Tetris Company; and Maya Rogers, president and CEO of Blue Planet Software, the sole agent on the Tetris brand, will be at the Ubisoft booth, South Hall #1023, to showcase Tetris Ultimate and sign autographs on June 10, 2–3 pm. The game will be playable at Ubisoft's Uplay™ lounge in The Standard hotel during E3.
