How to get Garrison Resources

Garrison Resources are something you may casually dismiss while leveling up. Quests are granting them left and right, you're not having any problems building your first building or two, and everything looks peachy. So you're thinking that you may as well start buying those Excess Potions of Accelerated Learning for 100 resources a pop, right? Wrong! Anyone who has spent hundreds of their precious resources on those potions could be in for a rude awakening once they hit level 100 and realize they need 2000 resources to upgrade their garrison. Don't let me stop you from buying the potions if you truly need to get to 100 a few hours earlier, but don't say I didn't warn you.

Either way, you're going to run into a resource problem eventually. Garrison Resources are the main bottleneck for progressing every aspect of your garrison. Given enough time, you will eventually generate enough resources to do everything you want. But we're not all patient people, are we? Here's a few tips to get your hands on some resources as soon as possible.

Found within your garrison

  • Your garrison cache next to your town hall generates resources at the rate of 6 per hour (144/day) and can hold a maximum of 500. This lets you go away from the game for a few days without worrying about losing any of these free resources.

  • There are some resources buried around your garrison. They'll show up as little mounds of dirt.

  • There is an underwater cave in your fishing pond, swim down there for a chest with a few resources.

  • Some follower missions can reward resources. These particular missions do not cost resources to start, but other follower missions do.

Quests

  • Tons of quests reward garrison resources. You will come across these naturally while leveling up. Once you're 100, you can go back and do quests you missed for the resources.

  • Some of the notable ones are the wanted quests, like the 3 from Spires of Arak that reward 100 resources each.

Buildings

  • The level 1 Lumber Mill allows you to chop down trees in the world and turn them into work orders which grant 20 resources each. That's a maximum of 120/day. With Phylarch the Evergreen as a follower assigned to the building, this becomes 30 resources per work order.

  • The level 1 Trading Post allows you to trade in 5 of a crafting reagent (randomly changes every day) for 30 resources per work order. That is a maximum of 180/day.

  • The level 1 Stables is not something you'd expect to provide resources, but doing all of the mount training quests yields a notable amount. There are 6 total mounts you can train through a series of quests in your stable. The initial quest to capture each mount rewards 50 resources per quest. In addition, completing each training daily yields 20 resources (120/day). Once you've trained all the mounts, the total yield from these quests is around 1600 resources, plus you get 6 new mounts!

Rares and treasures

  • Killing nearly every rare in Draenor grants roughly 20 resources the first time you kill them. There are a lot of rares out there to discover, and they all have short respawn timers. I feel comfortable saying that killing every available rare would net you at least 2000 resources. If you need help finding them, you can try an addon like HandyNotes and HandyNotes_DraenorTreasures which puts them all on your world map, and removes them from the map once you've killed them. Otherwise, just keep an eye out for skulls on your mini-map.

  • In addition to killing rares, many of the treasures found in Draenor also give you resources. The two addons mentioned above perform the same function for finding these. If you prefer not to use addons, you can purchase treasure maps for each zone from Grakis in Stormshield or Srikka in Warspear. Note that in order to purchase these maps, you must have completed the majority of the quests in the zone.
