iPhone, iPad tell Tales from the Borderlands, out now

Telltale's games can take their time to reach iOS, but the smartphones and tablets haven't had too long to wait this winter. Game of Thrones hit the App Store in the game's launch week, and now the first episode of Tales from the Borderlands is available for iPhone and iPad, priced at $5. As for Android, last we heard both games are due later this month.

The adventure adaptation of Gearbox's series takes place after the events of Borderlands 2, with players starring as Hyperion hopeful Rhys and Pandoran pretender Fiona. The first episode, "Zer0 Sum," is one of five comprising the series. If it tickles your fancy on iOS you can pre-purchase the remaining four parts at 25 percent off ($15) via the Episodes menu.

Those familiar The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us won't be surprised by Tales from the Borderlands' mix of light exploration, character interaction and story-altering choices. As noted in our glowing review of the first episode, however, the wasteland adventure does veer from Telltale's recent fare when it comes to tone.

"Unlike, say, The Walking Dead, I'm not constantly worrying about every decision potentially affecting the fate of a character I've grown to love," wrote Joystiq's Richard 'Handsome' Mitchell. "Hell, I'll bet that even if my actions do get a major character killed, it'll probably be funny anyway. And, on the other end of the spectrum, I'm not dying for the opportunity to kill off troublesome characters, because the story is more interesting and entertaining with them around. Tales from the Borderlands is more lighthearted than the murder investigations of The Wolf Among Us, meaning that your choices aren't burdened by the weight of responsibility – it's fun to take the chances you wouldn't risk in a darker story."
