"Candy is an integral part of the Cut the Rope franchise, and we do not support King.com trademarking and preventing others from using it," ZeptoLab CEO Misha Lyalin said in a press release.
King is the company behind Candy Crush Saga, and it attempted to trademark the term "candy" in the US earlier this year. The US trademark was approved for publication in January, but following backlash from the public and the IGDA, King withdrew its application in February. At the time, King said, "This does not affect our EU trademark for Candy and we continue to take all appropriate steps to protect our IP."
King's US trademark registration on the word "saga" was suspended in December.
