Media Center?
details
As I might have a while back, about the cord, I finally did it. And we are not looking back. My spouse manage to rely on Netflix and Amazon VOD. That being said, we have Roku and an Apple Tv that is hacked running Boxee and Xbmc. My request is to find a simple way to simplify my media consumption, by allowing me, using one box or multiple with central streaming location that would be cross platform, that would be amazing. I had installed Plex and followed their instruction with no luck. I guess,... Read more →

What is the best device to stream online television content to a TV?
details
We have a television, and a high speed internet connection, but because of some conflicts with a cable provider we have decided to forgo cable or satellite television. So now we're looking into what the best way to get television content is. We have a very basic HDTV, nothing special. I'm not really a fan of smart TVs because they lack longevity, so I'd like to stick with a device that can stream television content to our TV. What device would be best for that? We have a Netflix account, so it... Read more →

Is it possible to install Leopard or Snow Leopard (or even Ubuntu) on an original Apple TV?
details
I've had an original Apple TV just sitting in a box for ages now. It's not really useful for anything, considering the Apple TV software it runs is old and won't be updated. It's almost not even worth it to recycle -- I think Gazelle will give me a total of $35 for it! So, I've been looking at Mac minis to run as cheap server at home. Would the original Apple TV possibly fit that bill? Is possible to jailbreak and hack it so that I could run it as a headless server at home?

Using the new Apple Mac Mini as a iTunes server/time machine destination drive disk
details
I am thinking of picking one one of the new Mac Mini's and using it as a home server, i basically have 3 major uses in mind for it and want to make sure it will work the way i want it to before i go ahead and spend 600-1000$ for a new mini. I have quite a few movies/TV shows on iTunes and would like to be able to stream them to my Apple TV without it being a pain in the ass, currently my iTunes library is on my PC but the thing has a 1200w power supply and even idle it uses tons of juice. I want... Read more →

Did you upgrade from a first gen Apple TV to the newer second gen? What did you do with your original Apple TV?
details
I saw an interesting tweet this morning from Jacqui Cheng, an editor at Ars Technica, asking what people did with their original Apple TV's after picking up one of the latest iOS powered Apple TV's. I thought it was a great question and figured I'd bring it up to the gdgt community. As for myself, my original Apple TV is currently sitting in a box in the closet. I've had numerous issues with it -- constant freezing, poor performance. I thought I'd save it just in case I wanted to use it as some... Read more →

HDMI Problems: Distorted Image
details
Does anyone have problems with the HDMI on this thing? For the three years I have had it the display on my Philips HDTV is iffy at best occasionally being skewed or distorted. Sometimes I get no image at all The only solution appears to be turn the TV on and off (sometimes multiple times) until I get a clean image. I presume this is some sort of "handshake" problem between my TV and the Apple TV over HDMI. Does anyone else have issues? The problem does not occur with my xbox 360 via...

I really like the idea of one of the Digital Media Players (or whatever you want to call them).
details
While I can do all the different parts they enable individually, its a pain in my butt and it would be grrreat if I could have one box attached the TV/interwebs to bring it all together. So basically my question is (now that I've been able to see the BoxeeBox and there is a new Apple TV reported) what, really, is the difference between all the options? It seems like Boxee will offer Hulu but the others wont? I am assuming they all do the job of aggregating your existing media on the... Read more →

Apple TV 3.0 ... problems?
details
Updated to 3.0 as soon as it was available and now the performance of the 160GB, 3 month old unit I have is not as good as before. For the first time ever it crashed and restarted, and since the crash it has been having trouble resuming playback after pausing. Never had this issue before, anyone else got the same issue?

Display won't sync
details
Ever since the last software update, when I turn my display on it won't sync to the HDMI signal from the Apple TV. If I reboot the Apple TV it's fine. The display is a Dell 24" widescreen display (native 1080). Anyone else seen this, or - even better - have a fix?

No sound on rented movies, everything else has sound.
details
Twice now I have rented a movie, which appears to download fine, but has no sound when played. Playing the preview both before and after downloading works just fine. As does everything else that uses audio (including cursor movement). In between these two silent movies, I have experiences movie downloads with sound. I've requested my refund, but I'd prefer it not to happen! Any ideas as to what may be wrong? Is there anyway to force a replacement download to overwrite the first? Pete

Apple TV Heating Problem
details
My apple tv is constantly hot, i have to keep my AC on so it would cool down a bit, i really think apple should add a turn off option in addition to the standby... Lots of ppl are turning it off by pulling the power cord but that cant be good for the device...
