Why is OS X sooooooooo slow to access SMB shares over a network?
details

I've mentioned this before: Last year, we've moved our entire photo library and music library onto a NAS device (a Synology DS213). Overall, the experience has been decent. It's easy enough to access over the network (and even remotely) to store files, media, and all sorts of other data.
Except when I need to access my /photos or /music folders. There are thousands and sub-directories stored in each folder (sort by dates, e.g. "2014-07-23" in photos and Artist in... Read more →

What computer to get my non-techy Girlfriend?
details
Hello, I want to get my girlfriend some sort of desktop PC so she can browse the web, listen to music, watch YouTube, and Skype with me (damn Antarctic research site).
I was looking at building her an AMD based Mini ATX, but I'm seeing all these great, economical chrome OS based boxes for under $200.

How much better than the 2010 version?
details
I've got a 2010 Mac Mini (2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, GeForce 320M 256MB). It does most of what I need (videos as it is my HTPC hooked up to my TV running Plex), but it stutters if I try and do more than one thing at a time.

It would be nice to, say, stream a video via AirPlay (using AirServer) without having to quit Plex first.

I could sell my current Mac Mini and invest a bit extra to buy the new one, do you think the base model (2.5GHz Core i5) would be a decent upgrade?
