Is the iPad mini a PC? No, it's a supercomputer!
details
http://media.gdgt.com/img/products/473/a5di/a5di-460.jpg
According to a new report, Apple is now the world's top PC maker -- if you count the iPad as a PC. The report, from Canalys, says that Apple has a 20% share of the global PC market, having shipped 27 million computers during the 4th quarter of 2012 -- with iPads accounting for 22.9 million of those "computers."
With computer companies struggling amid competition from tablets, and even Apple seeing its high-flying stock come down to Earth as... Read more →

Favorite Accessories?
details
I've been asking a lot of questions about the Nexus 7 as of late, so I hope I'll be forgiven if I ask one more.
I've decided on getting the tablet although I'm still not sure I'm willing to shell out an extra $50 for the 32gb model (another topic entirely). I've also been researching a number of accessories to compliment the device, but I'd like to know what other people use so that maybe it'll spark some ideas.
Right now, I'm looking at getting the following:
  • Portenzo Book Case...

Productivity apps?
details
I know the Nexus 7 was touted mostly as a consumption device, but I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for productivity. There are actually not a whole lot of good articles on the subject, since I don't consider Evernote, Dropbox, etc productivity and those are always in professional blogger's lists.
I'm a front end developer, so coding apps of some kind would be great for those times where I've got nothing but a small tablet. FTP? Something to view PSD files? Create PDF's from some type of... Read more →

Apps for your parent's new tablet
details
If your parents got a new tablet for Christmas, what apps are you installing for them? I realized many of my favorite apps wouldn't be useful for them, but I have installed the following:
  • IMDB
  • Flixter (for watching trailors)
  • Skype
  • TED (in hopes they watch some education videos)
  • YouTube
  • Pandora (or Slacker Radio if your in Canada)
  • Facebook
And if your on Android, i felt the following widgets would be handy:
  • weather widget
  • bookmarks widget
  • google search widget
  • calendar widget

Severe ghosting between light and dark.
details
This has me a little worried after owning the product just a few months, but has anyone experienced browsing in Chrome to a website with a lot of white on screen, then if you close all of the tabs you notice severe ghosting on the screen? I've seen this to the extent that I've had readable type burned into the screen. It does appear to return to normal with time, but I wanted to know if anyone else has had experience with this.

Why I'm not buying an iPad mini
details
I'm not sure I want to get into the habit of always writing about why I'm not buying something, but since a few people have asked -- and since I wrote something similar about the Nexus 7 (http://gdgt.com/discuss/why-i-m-probably-not-buyi... -- I thought I'd share why I'm not buying an iPad mini.
It boils down to one reason: the screen. At 163 PPI, it's just not good enough.
Now, I may have felt differently if I didn't already own a Retina iPad (PPI = 264), but the screen on the... Read more →

Which tablet will dominate sales this holiday season?
details
http://media.gdgt.com/img/products/473/a5di/a5di-460.jpg
This holiday season is shaping up to be an epic battle for tablet manufacturers, with Apple's 4th-gen iPad and iPad mini competing against the Asus Nexus 7 and Samsung Nexus 10, Amazon's Kindle Fire HD, Barnes & Noble's Nook HD, and Microsoft's Surface RT, among others. With so many options, including some good tablets for under $200, will Apple be able to retain its market supremacy -- and if you're in the market for a tablet right... Read more →

Perceived Bias: GDGT Score
details
Rather than just complain about the numbers I decided to actually read the first 5 reviews of the Apple iPad Gen 4, Gen 3, iPad Mini, Samsung Nexus 10, Asus Nexus 7, and Kindle Paperwhite. Then I looked at the Reviews FAQ that Ryan Block posted to determine how gdgt assessed the gdgt score. I see that the Critic reviews do not tie into the gdgt scoring system (or if they do, I cannot look at the score, but rather am directed to the site of the Critic). I also see that the score is not based on a... Read more →

Nexus 7 Shortcomings
details
The terms "fanboy" and "troll" seem to be used all the time these days as a cheap copout when you don't agree with someones opinion. As a graphic designer who prefers to use PC, I've encountered tech snobbery and elitism all my academic life. I even had a professor tell me that "you can't be a real designer unless you use a mac". I hate and rebel against this kind of group think but I don't shy away from a platform, or hardware's failures. So with that in mind, here are the top 6 things that I... Read more →

Why do the hardware specs matter?
details
I have read a lot of reviews and discussions where they are comparing the specs of a device against another. There have been lots of comparisons of late of the iPad, Surface tablet and Nexus 7. Does it really matter what their hardware is when you are comparing devices designed for different operating systems?
The iPad 3rd gen has a dual core processor and only 512 GB of ram and the New surface tablet has a quad core processor with 2 GB of ram and they are both are comparably fast and responsive... Read more →

What are you expecting Google to announce at their Oct 29th event?
details

The Galaxy Nexus Google+ page (https://plus.google.com/113238550815846424978/pos... has confirmed that there will be multiple Nexus devices announced at the October 29th event. What are you expecting (or hoping) they will announce?
It feels like new rumors have been popping up almost daily. The early rumors were that as many as five manufacturers would release Nexus devices this year. LG may get its first chance at a Nexus... Read more →

Nexus 7 demand?
details
Wow - I missed the 14 day window to return my Nexus 7, and now I can't find anyone interested enough to buy it (I've posted to Craigslist and Facebook). No interest at all at $150 for something essentially still in the box. Is it the appeal of the Kindle Fire, awaiting the arrival of an iPad Mini, or just a general lack of interest?

BB playbook, or Nexus 7?
details
In the UK at the moment the 64GB blackberry playbook is available for £129, (and for me £116) the Nexus 7 is £159 or £199 for the 8GB and 16GB versions respectively. (and for me the 16GB is £179)
Which to buy?
Hardware numbers wise the Nexus seems a little better however stereo speakers, the rear camera, and the 64GB on the Playbook seen like a bonus, however I use the cloud for a lot of storage and stream media.
OTOH the Nexus is android, therefore full access to the play store and all the... Read more →
