Canon's latest high-end compact has a very sharp, fast lens, good low-light performance, and full manual controls. PCMag says its "image quality and physical control layout are excellent," and DigitalCameraInfo says it's "a great choice" if you're looking for a small-sensor high-end compact, adding that they're "thrilled with the G15’s performance." While most critics continue to rank the Sony RX100 as their top compact camera (as do we), that large-sensor model sells for at least $200 more than the G15. As CNET puts it, the G15 is a " fine camera if you're looking for something better and with more manual controls than a typical point-and-shoot, but can't bring yourself to pay more than $500."

The enthusiast-focused Canon PowerShot G15 delivers excellent image quality, but lacks some features found in other top-end cameras.

The Canon PowerShot G15 continues the G-series tradition of solid advanced compacts, but doesn't rank as best in class by any particular measure.

Digital Photography Review Nov 21, 2012

It is very quick and responsive in operation, built like a tank and offers the most external controls in its class. In combination with the fast 28-140mm F1.8-2.8 lens that makes it a very versatile and pocketable photographic tool that offers almost the same degree of control as much larger DSLRs.

As long as you are OK knowing that the the image quality is stuck a notch below larger-sensor cameras, most of the G15's other attributes are a pleasure. It costs $50 more than the Panasonic LX-7, which we liked a lot. Then, for $100 more, you can get the great Fuji X10, with a 2/3-inch sensor and...

The Canon PowerShot G15 is an undeniably impressive compact camera. It's not going to suit all tastes on account of its bulky ... build, but for those after full control and both exceptional performance and image quality then there are few other places to look that deliver to this level.

The G15 will do nothing to dent the PowerShot G-series' excellent reputation. It does feel a little expensive when stood against its closest competitors though ... Nonetheless, performance is good and the wide maximum aperture at both ends of the zoom is seriously tempting.

Like the G7, Canon's PowerShot G15 is camera that's perfectly fine on the technical front but which ditches some of the features formerly seen in this range, stripping the camera of any real bonus compared with competitor models.

There are bags of features, in a very sturdy, well-built body and image quality to match. We love the 10 fps continuous shooting and fast f/1.8-2.8 lens. There wasn't much we could find that we didn't like ... the Canon Powershot G15 is a pleasure to use and we are happy to highly recommend it.
