Nikon's 1 lineup of mirrorless cameras provide an affordable entry point for consumers, with the new J3 continuing this trend by providing decent image quality and super fast speeds -- but speed is the only real gain here. The J3 for the most part, "retains the minimalist, almost futuristic looks of its J1 and J2 predecessors," according to T3. One item that did change was the location of the mode dial, with TechRadar noting they moved "the mode dial from the back of the camera to the top of the camera, which does make it slightly easier to use with your thumb." The improved ease-of-use continues in the menu system, with DigitalCameraInfo calling it "among the simplest we've seen on a compact system camera." In terms of image quality, CNET UK said "the level of retained detail was excellent," and TechRadar agreed, saying that "images generally are pretty good." In spite of the solid image performance, Pocket-Lint does point out that "there are lots of other options out there that are that one step better than the J3." show more

The Nikon J3 compact interchageable lens camera is a speedy performer, but it isn't the best in low light, and lacks expansion options when compared with the competition.

Performance is good, and although it's still expensive the price is easier to swallow this time around, with a higher resolution sensor helping it compete more effectively with its rivals.

To put it bluntly, unless your main prerequisite for a new camera is monstrously quick continuous shooting, there are at least a dozen better choices than the J3 in the $600 price range. But if you feel the need for speed, the J3 could be your ticket to ride.

There is some appeal, mainly in the camera's quirky special shooting modes. There's a lot going on under the hood too but, despite all its hidden techy gems, we feel that the J3 doesn't advance the series at a price point that's pushing it.

Nikon has updated its 1 J-series mirrorless camera nicely with the J3. ... This year's model is very good, even if its super-speedy responsiveness can feel a bit disproportionate in this kind of camera. Plus, we think Wi-Fi and a touchscreen would have made nice additions.

If you want all the mod cons, room to expand and the best image quality achievable from a CSC, look elsewhere. If you want convenience however, and one of the smallest form factors on the market yet one that also boasts a solid build, the J3 fits the bill.

The Nikon 1 J3 is flawed on several levels. It handles poorly, has limited features and takes deeply average photos. It’s rare for a camera to disappoint this much, but the Nikon 1 J3 is one to avoid.

The J3 is smaller, lighter and, well, just all-round better than the J2. ... But that might leave those who purchased a J2 a little miffed that they didn't wait an extra four months for the latest aluminium-bodied J3 model.

It may not be a huge leap when compared to the J2, but the Nikon 1 J3 includes enough subtle improvements to raise Nikon's game in the compact system camera arena. We look forward to testing it out in full.
