A good rugged camera with a few software wrinkles

77

Has Sony swept away the competition with the Action Cam? Not quite. But as Sony's first attempt in this category, it's both respectable and promising. The camera does what it promises -- it lets you shoot good-quality action footage. The ability to shoot 720p video at 120 frames per second gives the Action Cam a stand-out feature, which may be enough to win it a dedicated following. That said, the photo modes are somewhat limited, and the app integration isn't up to scratch.

If Sony can promise (and deliver) an app update soon, along with a firmware fix to allow more camera shooting modes (burst and single-shot, please!), then the Action Cam would go from the leagues of a tandem parachute jump to a gnarly wing-suit dive.

The Sony produces pretty decent images at a nice price, and it has that neat 720p/120fps trick. But hold off for now.

The Sony Action Cam is a solid first effort and worth its price, but some design shortcomings may be enough to put off some potential buyers.

The Sony Action Cam is one of the most affordable action cameras you can get, and while it's capable of shooting decent looking video at 1080p60, its video quality just isn't on the same level as some competitors.

Sony's first action camera is good. It just needs a few design tweaks and feature fixes to make it stand out even more.

If you are new to action cameras, the Sony Action Cam is a great place to start ... The new GoPro Hero3, however, is the camera to beat in the segment now, but it does come with a price premium. Overall, though, the Sony Action Cam remains competitive and is definitely worth a look.

This Camera with the new 3.0 firmware blows the GPH3 out of the water in my opinion. the play memories app makes it work well when in the waterproof case. and the optional handy cam cradle make it great for everyday use. the price is right. and the camera is awesome!
