The Sony SRS-X5 is a portable speaker that somewhat stretches the definition of portability, but it still offers room-filling sound in a compact form factor.

At eight inches wide, the SRS-X5 isn't a speaker you'll be putting in your bag to take on a picnic or to the beach, but CNET says it "can be easily moved from room to room." You wouldn't want it near water anyway, as PC World Australia notes it's let down by "a lack of waterproofing." But otherwise, PC World Australia says it's "well thought out" with "a touch of prestige."

That prestige extends to the sound the X5 puts out, with CNET "impressed by the amount of bass it delivers for its small size and its clean, relatively natural sound." PC World Australia tried various albums out on it, finding "trance tracks are particularly ripe for a speaker of its calibre" but it "struggled with" rock, partly due to "the SRS-X5’s limited dimension."

The SRS-X5 offers acceptable sound in a handsome package, but for the price speakers like the Jambox and the Braven 850 have a lot more to offer.

While it doesn't play as loud when it's on battery power, the Sony SRS-X5 holds its own against the top Bluetooth speakers in its size and price class.

The Sony SRS-X5 is a solid Bluetooth speaker, but you can find more bass and portability at this price range.

Letting the speaker down is a lack of waterproofing. ... Sony’s speaker can go outside, but only when it is sunny and there’s a nice, clean table it can rest on. It’s such a shame, especially when you realise Sony smartphones have a thing for water.

I bought this model as a birthday present for my son after doing quite a bit of research and listening. In my opinion, it is the best value for money product out there at the moment in this price range (I paid £140). It's a minimalist, understated and sleek design, which will appeal to a broad...
