The VAIO Fit 15 has had a makeover, emerging from Sony’s design studio with a brushed-aluminum case and an excellent touchscreen. But shiny new looks don't distract from lackluster battery life and so-so performance.

Some multimedia users will want more robust specs, which understandable given the $950 price tag. However, people shopping for a "family PC" that can perform basic computing functions, with a quality display, and comfortable design may find the Sony VAIO Fit to be a great fit.

At its $579 base price, with a Pentium processor and no touch screen, the VAIO Fit E 15 makes a decent option for a budget laptop with a great 1080p display. But you'll want to be careful about its flexible lid, or pay $100 more for the metal-shelled model.
