  • Super Smash Bros. hints that Mario's extra lives are clones

Descriptions for items within Super Smash Bros. for 3DS have already discussed Metroid protagonist Samus' inability to crawl. Another meme-referencing bit of text surfaced this week, this time providing a theory for Mario's extra lives. According to the description for 1-Up Mushrooms in the European version of the game provided by NeoGAF user SalsaShark, an extra life means "a whole extra version of you." The bit of text within Super Smash Bros. pondered the meaning of Mario's clones and whether "making more copies of yourself the real goal of any adventure" before imagining "a bunch of Marios getting together to discuss it." The North American version rephrases the same notion, which recalls a video of the double cherry power-up in action in Super Mario 3D World, found after the break. Do you have any favorite Easter eggs from Super Smash Bros. on 3DS? If so, share them with us in the comments! The Wii U version of the game will launch November 21. [Image: Nintendo, Imgur]

One of the first things we do Friday morning is pull out our huge Mario-themed dartboard from under the bed, blindfold ourselves, take a small sip of OJ, spin 2.5 times, then wildly toss sharp darts at what we hope is not anything expensive. When that whole process is finished, usually we have landed a dart somewhere on the board, thus determining our topic for It's-a Mario World that day. Just so happens today we're talking about coins. And you're going to like it. Please like it.Today we are also introducing a hip new aspect to our already fairly hip feature. At the bottom of this post you'll notice a place where we have listed "links of the week," where we will hereafter link you to recent Mario content on WiiFanboy as well as to other cool Mario thingamajigs on the Intertubes. Hopefully, this will serve as a means for all of us to continue agitating our unhealthy addictions to Mario & friends. Before you go clicking away on them, though, check out our new gallery in which the currency of the Mushroom Kingdom is discussed at uncomfortable length. Coins! It's-a Mario World is a weekly feature in which the ubiquity of Nintendo's flagship character is celebrated. Check back every Friday to find out what strange and wonderful thing has got us tipping our caps. * * * Links of the week: Wario steals Born for Wii! | Real Mario-karting in France! | Cheap BK toys! | Mario Paint lives! | Jazzed SMB2 theme!

  • Knit yourself a few extra lives

Any knitters out there in DS Fanboy land? We've seen a few in the comments from time to time, so we've got something for you: patterns for mushroom toys! Now you can make your own mushrooms for extra lives or embiggening (that look a little like stuffed socks), and hug them and squeeze them for hours on end. We do not, however, recommend that you eat them. This blogger, sadly, cannot knit, and not for lack of trying. After a single row, it all becomes very alien. Maybe it's time for Knitting Training or something ....[Via OMG Nintendo]

It's been a while since we've seen anything from one of our favorite modders, the French Kotomi, but there's been a re-emergence ... along with a chance to get your hands on one of the spectacular original mods. And by original, we mean original, as in early in his DS-modding career. Don't expect it to be cheap, though -- this 1UP mushroom mod is going for €150, which translates to about $217 in U.S. terms. For that kind of money, we're not sure we want to do more than just admire it from afar.

  • Analyzing Medusa in gamer mythology

In his recent Retronauts feature, 1UP's Jeremy Parish examines the disparate interpretations of Medusa throughout early gaming. Discarding most of the intricate histories of the Gorgon sister, most game designers chose instead to focus on the two (obviously most important) aspects of Medusa: her serpentine hairdo and (sometimes) her stone-inducing gaze.Pariah gives a number of examples, with pictures, of Medusa in gaming before transitioning into a discussion on the Castlevania series and its insistence on making Medusa a flying head maneuvering in a sinusoidal pattern. One of the tales of Medusa that we haven't seen game designers capitalize on: when Perseus beheaded Medusa, Pegasus the winged horse and Chrysaor the giant sprang forth, presumably the offspring born of an night of passion between Poseidon and Medusa.
