  • Neverwinter's magic spells are pretty wizard

    Cryptic Studios and Atari Perfect World Entertainment have shared both the video above and the gallery below, both designed to show you what the upcoming Neverwinter's Control Wizard class is capable of. As you can see in the video especially, the spells are heavily inspired by pen-and-paper Dungeons and Dragons, and the game will have you casting old favorites like Magic Missile, Ray of Frost, and the destructive Ice Storm.You can also see a few other 4th Edition D&D mainstays, including Tiefling heroes (they're the ones with the horns) and some NPC zombies and skeletons.   • Cryptic Studios' Andy Velasquez talks Neverwinter

    Would-be citizens of Neverwinter are certainly waiting anxiously for Cryptic Studios' upcoming venture into the Jewel of the North, which we received favorably at PAX East last month. Well, unfortunately we're going to have to wait a bit longer, but in the mean time, MMORPG.com has a new interview with Neverwinter's Lead Producer, Andy Velasquez, to shine some light on the most civilized city in Faerun. Velasquez answers questions on a number of topics, including the decision to use 4th edition rules, the amount of content that will be available at launch, and the difference between a raid and a Dungeon Delve. It's definitely worth a read for anyone interested in the upcoming title, so if you're one of those people, head on over to the full interview and give it a look.

  • The Game Archaeologist and the dragon of the deep dungeon

    The Game Archaeologist is a lazy adventurer-slash-professor who dons his trademark cap for a weekly expedition through some of the most famous MMOs of the past few decades. Each month, he chooses a different title in order to examine its highlights, talk with its developers, and invite its fans to share their experiences. Part of the holy mission of the Game Archaeologist is to ferret out the roots of history that ultimately led to MMORPGs as we know them today. Another part of the mission is to root out ferrets, as my claw-scarred arms can attest. Some of that history is fairly recent, but today we're going to travel back -- way back -- to a time before many of you were born. Including me, as a matter of fact. The year is 1974. The world is hip-deep in the throes of shag carpeting, driftwood furniture and the strains of Grand Funk Railroad. It truly seemed like nothing would ever be cool or non-earth-toned again. At this, the lowest moment in all of history, game designers Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson took the concept of miniature wargaming, merged it with a fantasy motif, and sold it under the name Dungeons & Dragons. Geeks everywhere had a reason to rejoice, and through this roleplaying game the foundations for MMOs were laid. Let's take a brief survey through D&D, giving special emphasis to how this great-granddaddy of RPGs passed down a legacy that we enjoy in our modern online titles. Also, there will be popcorn.

  • Cryptic and Atari announce Neverwinter

    The speculation has been going on for quite a while, and it's finally been confirmed: The Neverwinter Nights MMO is coming. Well, sort of. Neverwinter will be developed by Cryptic, and Gamespot was lucky enough to get a little one-on-one time with COO Jack Emmert. Something that he was careful to point out was that this is not a full-blown, persistent MMO: "I wouldn't say MMORPG at all -- Neverwinter is a cooperative RPG." The Neverwinter site is up and running, with plenty of interesting details about the game. It's based on 4th edition D&D, set for launch in 2011, and is inspired by R.A. Salvatore's upcoming trilogy. The first book in that series arrives in October, so by the time Neverwinter launches, the world should be fully established. For the time being, Cryptic and Atari have provided a fair amount of resources for hopeful (and skeptical) fans to keep up with development.   • Kate Paiz discusses DDO's Module 7; Monk demo at Connect 08

    Ten Ton Hammer recently had the chance to talk to Dungeons and Dragons Online producer Kate Paiz, and learned about some of the things to expect when Module 7 is released. During the interview, she said that the Connect 08 event that will take place in just a few days time now will showcase one of the main features of this content update, the brand new Monk class. This will not just be a video -- there will be a playable demo available to attendees as well.Apart from the Monk, Module 7 will bring a new high level wilderness and raid based in Shavarath, and some improvements to the crafting system, with more crafting love promised for the future. TTH also asks Paiz about how the 4th Edition D&D Ruleset will affect DDO. Without going into all the detail here, she basically says that they will work out what fits with DDO only after the Wizards of the Coast iron out the new feature set, which is not set in stone just yet.
