Nokia C6 firmware hacked with care onto 5800 and 5530
Considering the sheer volume of 5800 XpressMusics that Nokia has sold over the past year and a half, it's little wonder that they've got a few dedicated hackers out there working on keeping the company's first S60 Fifth Edition device up to date, isn't it? Sure enough, the C6's updated skin with legit home screen widgets has been shoehorned onto both the 5800 and its 5530 sibling -- and although the update process seems like a bit of a nightmare fraught with bricking dangers, a successful update means you might be able to go another year without shelling out for a new set. Nokia 5530 XpressMusic Games Edition goes on sale in US, puts the hurt on boredom
Sure, Nokia's 5530 XpressMusic has been on sale across the States for months now, but here's the thing: if you bust it out of the box and try to use it literally the second you get the package in the mail, you'll find yourself facing a depression-inducing lack of entertainment. It's a nightmarish reality facing thousands of buyers, but Nokia's closing the gap with the release of the 5530 Games Edition, which -- yes, that's right -- includes a bunch of games preloaded. In total, you've got 20 titles from both Gameloft and EA for $10 more than the standard model at $299 -- the only problem is that Nokia's running a special on the base 5530 for $219 right now, so for the moment, anyway, you're much, much better off going the boring route and loading the games yourself.
Nokia's Illuvial Collection is pretty in pink
We're not sure why the color pink tends to spawn special editions with greater frequency than other colors, but for pink lovers, it works out pretty nicely because you end up getting all sorts of free crap bundled with your phone simply for buying your favorite shade. Take Nokia's new Illuvial Collection, for example, which has taken the 5530, 6303, and 6700, dressed them up in a very hot shade of pink, and stuffed 'em in boxes with custom leather cases and straps. The pinkfest doesn't stop there, though: the phones also include custom themes which are dominated by -- you guessed it -- pink. It looks like all three models are already available from the UK's mobiles.co.uk, and other markets throughout Europe should be getting hooked up with at least some of these in the coming weeks. Nokia X6 video hands-on: proof that capacitive touchscreens are better
While Nokia wouldn't invite us to Nokia World this year, we were fortunate enough to discover a pair of its new X6 handsets on the IFA floor here in Berlin. On hand were two engineering prototypes, one of which was peeling away from its plastic shell while the other seemed less responsive to our finger-taps. Still, it's clear that the capacitive touchscreen is far more responsive to human touch than the resistive screens found on its N97, or the 5800 XpressMusic especially. This was made abundantly clear when using the on-screen keyboard although some of our swiping gestures were inexplicably ignored in other elements of the interface. But given the choice of the screen being awesome or super-awesome (remember, we're comparing it to Nokia's resistive touchscreen legacy), we'll have to settle on the former for now. Of course, underneath you've still got S60 5th, for better or worse, pumping away inside a chubby little candybar -- no screen tech can change that. Nokia rumors: Xseries is XpressMusic successor, new Nseries touchphone in '09?
German site NokiaPort has rounded up a nice little cache of juicy Nokia details that it says is culled from "official information from Nokia, confirmed rumors and reputable sources of information," and while we can't personally vouch for most of what we're seeing here, it's all sounding reasonable enough -- and with Nokia World right around the corner, we figured this would be a grand opportunity to lay it out and see how the chips fall. First up, Cseries and Xseries are said to be presented at the show, with the first Xseries model being an upgraded version of the just-launched 5530 XpressMusic with 3G thrown in, probably spelling doom for the 5800 -- in other words, Xseries is very likely a wholesale rebranding of the XpressMusic line, which totally makes sense. Speaking of touchscreens and Nokia branding, the site says that we'll see another touchscreen Nseries model to keep the N97 company before the year's out, followed by Eseries' first S60 5th Edition model in 2010. Coincidentally, they've got a part of a supposed new touch model pictured on the site (see above), though we're not clear on what we're seeing. In the Maemo department, the N900 is likely to be the only Maemo 5 device for the better part of the year, though there's apparently a mysterious N920 already making the rounds in the Espoo campus. As technologies go, xenon flashes are apparently on the outs with Nokia -- better hang onto your phones, N82 owners -- while capacitive screens should start to take hold. Samsung has already proven that S60 works just fine and dandy with a capacitive display on the i8910, so we're stoked to see where Nokia takes it. Finally, OMAP3 cores are said to be working their way into the lineup following a Cortex A8-based introduction in the N900; Nokia has historically lagged its competition as processing power goes, so it'll be great to see them start to match up with the Pres and the iPhones of the world -- at least as far as raw computational might goes, anyhow. Nokia 5530 XpressMusic up for $290 preorder on US site
We'd figured the 5530 was destined for markets around the globe where 2G still dominates, so imagine our pleasant surprise to see that good ol' Nokia USA is as amped as anyone to start selling the company's new low-cost S60 5th Edition device. This leaves potential buyers in a doozy of a dilemma, though: most retailers are now selling the 5530's big brother, the 5800, for under $300, which makes the $290 sticker for a 3G-less version pretty hard to swallow. On the flipside, the 5530's unquestionably the more attractive phone and the updated home screen is going to leave 5800 owners insanely envious. It's a tough call, and it's not a call we'd want to have to make -- one of each, perhaps? There's no shipping date listed on the preorder, but for your patience Nokia's awarding you with an MD-8 stereo Bluetooth speaker if you order online -- just pony up your $289.99, pick the white or black version of the phone, twiddle your thumbs, and don't be shocked when the New York and Chicago flagships get stock before you do. Nokia 5530 XpressMusic out of box, handled on video, preferred over 5800
As far as we're concerned, Nokia's 5530 XpressMusic far and away out-classes its more expensive older brother the 5800, even if it is lacking in the 3G department. British phone retailer mobiles.co.uk thought it best to tease us with an unboxing video of their own, along with some quick impressions of the touchscreen device. It's certainly a looker, and a sleek device they're pretty confident will do well. Some of the S60 5th edition additions are very welcomed, such as the new scrolling contacts bar, but for better and for worse (mostly worse), it's still S60. Carphone Warehouse gets UK exclusive on Nokia 5530 XpressMusic next week
If you're looking for the cheapest possible way to get in on this S60 5th Edition craze that's sweeping the globe, you've probably got a keen eye on Nokia's 5530 -- a phone that strangely looks much nicer than its pricier, more full-featured 5800 big brother -- and if you're in the UK, you won't be waiting much longer. Mobile Today is reporting that Carphone Warhouse has nabbed itself a nice little six-week British exclusive on the phone starting August 11, running a totally palatable £130 (about $218) on a pay-as-you-go deal. We'd have a hard time adapting to EDGE, but who knows -- if you've got enough open WiFi networks in your daily route, maybe it's doable.[Via Unwired View]
Nokia 5530 XpressMusic gets FCC approval, still no 3G to be found
Call us hopeless optimists, but some part of us was holding out some truly foolish belief that we might yet see a version of Nokia's pretty 5530 XpressMusic with 3G on board. Despite the fact that it looks considerably better than the supposedly higher-end 5800, the 5530 tops out with EDGE for the WWAN, relying instead on WiFi for the heavy data lifting in exchange for a dirt-cheap unlocked retail sticker price. That said, we'd still take one if they were available. At least Nokia stuck this FCC lab with the less attractive black / red color combo, so our usual bout of raging jealousy is just a tad tempered this time around.
Nokia's E72 and 5530 XpressMusic in the S60-powered flesh
Seeing how these announcements are going down live in Singapore as we speak, we've got a few sources of live pictures of Nokia's latest announcements coming in off the interwebs already; it's all raw, unfiltered footage, but that's exactly the way we like it around here. We won't know for certain until we touch it, but at a glance, the E72 certainly looks like a worthy successor to one of the greatest phones Nokia has ever made, and the 5530 looks like the 5800 should've looked. Nokia E72, 5530 XpressMusic get official
You'd think that Nokia would want to do a better job of building up such important product announcements with a long, drawn-out series of frustratingly unhelpful teasers, viral videos, and global PR campaigns, but instead, it turns out that the rumored E72 and 5530 XpressMusic have been officially unveiled at the company's Connection 09 event in Singapore. The E72 is arguably the bigger announcement of the two, succeeding the E71 by adding a whopping 5 megapixel camera, a 3.5mm headphone jack (thank goodness), integrated compass, 10.2Mbps HSDPA, and an optical navigation pad; it'll hit in the third quarter for €350 (about $489). Follow the break for video of the E72 in slick, polished, high-orchestrated marketing action. Next up, as we'd heard, the 5530 ends up being a small step down from the 5800 in the S60 5th Edition totem pole, offering just EDGE data without any form of 3G (though you've still got WiFi). It's got a 3.2 megapixel camera with LED flash, 3.5mm jack, and a 640 x 360 touchscreen display. Rumored Nokia 5900 XpressMusic is actually a lower-end 5530?
We were cautiously optimistic after seeing the alleged 5900 XpressMusic leak out a few weeks ago that Nokia was taking a keen interest in upgrading the plain-vanilla looks of its midrange 5800 to give it more of a premium feel, but strangely, it sounds like there might be very different forces at play here. Cellpassion says that it can "confidently say" that the silvery device here is actually a downgrade from the 5800 -- a model 5530 codenamed "Kenzo." Rumored specs include a 3.2 megapixel AF cam (same as the 5800), a lower-res QVGA display clocking in at 2.9 inches, 150MB of onboard storage, and -- here's the kicker -- no 3G or WiFi. It's said to be looking at a retail price under $200, which makes us wonder if this couldn't actually be the domestic Chinese version of a device that could launch in other markets with 3G and / or WiFi enabled. Just a guess, but here's hoping we get some concrete answers shortly.
Dell lets Adamo 9 and Studio One 22 slip
In another of those extra-special slip-ups peculiar to Dell, we get the unofficial announcement of a pair of new computers courtesy of Dell's own support documents. This time, it's the Dell Adamo 9 and Studio One 22. From that bit of info we can deduce a 9-inch, ultra-glam, ultra-portable laptop carrying Dell's luxury Adamo brand as well as a 22-inch version of Dell's sexy Studio One all-in-one PC. Pretty sweet by comparison to the relative heft of the just announced 13-inch Adamo laptop and the tiny display on Dell's 19-inch Studio One. Good times.Update: Blogeee.net spotted the Adamo 9 on the compatibility list for the Dell Wireless 5530 card. In other words, the Adamo 9 will offer both internal HSPA data and GPS lock as an optional update.[Thanks, Steve S.]
