  • T-Mobile puts the kibosh on Nokia 5610 sales to resolve display problems

Hey, we've got a joke for you: what do you call a phone with a display that just goes blank without warning? A Nokia 5610! Get it? Okay, so that's not a joke -- it's totally happening to some T-Mobile customers right now, and sales of the XpressMusic slider have been temporarily halted so Nokia can figure out what the heck is going on. It's important to note here that the phones aren't being recalled, they're just not being sold anymore; if you currently have a 5610 and you're not, you know, seeing anything on the display, you're encouraged to get in touch with customer care to "discuss available options."

  • Nokia XpressMusic 5610 comes to T-Mobile

As expected, T-Mobile has now launched the Nokia XpressMusic 5610 slider to compliment the 5310 candybar launched back in May. Though the software and the phone's raison d'être (music, that is) both mirror the slimmer 5310, the new slider turns up the heat a bit with a more capable 3.2-megapixel autofocus camera with dual-LED flash and something Nokia calls the "music slider," a sliding bar directly below the display that gives the user lightning-quick access to the music player and radio. Other features include a microSD slot (with 1GB bundled in the box), stereo Bluetooth, 2.2-inch QVGA display, and a standard issue quadband EDGE radio sans 3G -- though we'd hardly call that a feature. It's available starting today in white with silver trim or black with red trim for $99 on a two-year contract. We've been toying around with a 5610 for the past few days, and as a Nokia dumbphone, it definitely gets the job done. It feels rock solid -- slider mechanism included -- which is a good sign for anyone used to loose, creaky Nokias of old. Be warned: though the phone is advertised as featuring a 3.5mm headphone jack, it's only available when you plug in a bundled external dongle. That'd be alright for a normal handset, but since the 5610 gets slapped with the XpressMusic branding, we can't say we really approve. On the upside, the loudspeaker is seriously one of the loudest -- perhaps the loudest -- we've ever heard on any phone, ever. So loud, in fact, that it hurts your ears at max volume if you're within a foot or two of the thing.Voice quality is a tad on the tinny side, but plenty loud and clear. The top row of keys can be a little hard to access with your fat fingers butted up against the bottom of the upper portion of the slide, but otherwise, the keypad's decent and very usable. The navigation keys are equally easy to use, though we would've liked to have seen the "music slider" concept taken further -- it should flip between any open applet, not just between your current screen and the music apps. Bottom line? For 99 bucks, we like it, but for 49 bucks, we'd love it. Whatdya say, T-Mob?Update: Though T-Mobile's press materials indicate that 1GB microSD cards are being shipped with the phone, buyers and retailers alike are reporting that it's actually 2GB. No complaints here!%Gallery-29375%

  • Details emerge on T-Mobile's upcoming Samsung and Nokia releases

We're still kinda weirded out by that figure of six-frickin'-teen new handsets for T-Mob between now and August, but details on five of those alleged sixteen is a solid start. Boy Genius Report has scored internal release information on three Nokias and two well-known Samsungs, the t229 and t339. Starting with the Sammies, the t229 will be launching in red (and red only) to shore up the low end with what seems to be a VGA camera, Bluetooth, and not much else, while the t339 will offer WiFi for HotSpot@Home compatibility and a 1.3 megapixel cam; both will be available in June. On the Nokia side, the XpressMusic 5610 slider (which we've seen in T-Mobile trim courtesy of the FCC) will be joining the just-announced 5310, though the carrier has yet to determine a launch window for this one. The forgettable 2760 clam launches on June 16 -- nothing more to be said about that one -- and finally, the 6301 with WiFi gets real on June 23. We're holding out for the new Shadows, but yeah, it seems like a fun time to be a T-Mobile customer -- particularly if you're into the UMA stuff.

  • 16 devices for T-Mobile between June and August?

TmoNews has published a laundry list of devices that it says will launch between June 16 and August 1 -- 13, to be exact, with another three that aren't listed. That's a positively Japan-esque release pace, a breakneck schedule that we're having a hard time believing. To its credit, several launches that are known or well-rumored to be in the pipe are listed here, including the Motorola E8, Shadow II, Samsung t229 and t339, and Nokia 5610, but to its discredit, fanciful devices like an alleged Shadow III are also in the mix along with the BlackBerry Bold, which AT&T has an exclusive on following its launch over there that should easily prevent T-Mob from picking it up by August 1. Of course, there could be some wiggle room on those dates, and again, most of these devices seem totally plausible -- but for now we've got to file this squarely in the "we want to believe" category.[Thanks, Chris W.]

  • Nokia 5610 spotted with T-Mobile branding -- but which T-Mobile?

It looks like we all missed this little gem tucked away in the Nokia XpressMusic 5610's FCC filing when it went public last month. Yep, your eyes aren't deceiving you -- you're looking at a T-Mobile logo front and center there. Only problem is, we can't figure out which T-Mobile they're referring to. Our gut tells us it's probably the US one that we all know and love, seeing how they carry the 5300 presently, and the particular flavor of the 5610 bearing T-Mob's credentials is a straight 2.5G piece across four bands. That's right, no 1700 or 2100MHz 3G here, and seeing how European carriers like 2.5G handsets like they like pokes in the eye with a sharp stick, that pretty much settles it. Cool how we've just decided it's gotta be T-Mobile USA in the post, isn't it? No word on a release on T-Mobile divisions on either side of the Atlantic at this point, though, so we'll keep our ear to the ground.[Via CellPhoneSignal, thanks Marco]

We've had the good fortune to spend some time with several members of Nokia's just-announced lineup: the N81, the 5310 and 5610 from the XpressMusic series, and the US spec N95. So is an N95 packed with HSDPA 850 / 1900 like the best thing ever? Check it all out over at Engadget Mobile!Read - US N95Read - N81Read - XpressMusic 5310 and 5610

Ah, here's Nokia's new XpressMusic 5610 and 5310 in the flesh -- well, in the plastic. Right away one can tell the 5310 is quite thin (about half the thickness of the 5610), yet manages to fit a 3.5mm headphone jack, while the 5610 is far thicker and only has the 2.5mm jack variety. Oook. Both feel acceptably sturdy, and we actually do kind of like the left-right rocker on the 5610; we've only had these S40 devices for a few hours, so it's a little early on yet, but we likes what we're seeing thus far. • Nokia announces XpressMusic 5310 and 5610

Nokia has added two models to its music oriented XpressMusic series today. The 5310 candybar clocks in at just 9.9mm thick, offers 18 hours of music playback -- through the 3.5mm jack if you're so inclined -- a microSD slot supporting capacities up to 4GB, dedicated music controls, and a QVGA display for €225 (about $307) when it ships in the fourth quarter. Next up, the 5610 rocks a slider form factor and features a nifty slide navigation bar underneath the display, metallic and high-gloss finishes, a 2.2 inch QVGA display, 3.2 megapixel camera, microSD slot, and close to a full day of music playback for a tad more than its sibling, €300 (about $410), with a drop date also in Q4.

The N81 slider apparently isn't the only device up Nokia's sleeve for tomorrow morning. Gearfuse scored some shots of the 8GB N95 along with the XpressMusic 5310, 5610, and 5700 series (looking positively lovely in black, may we add), all of which are presumably destined for the announcement docket. Anyone else getting pumped for the official news?
