AMD just launched its new Ryzen 5000 mobile family with Ryzen H-Series CPUs aimed at gamers and content creators, along with the power-friendly U-series chips designed for thin and light ultrathin PCs.
Samsung’s first 7-nanometer EUV processor will power the Galaxy Note 10
Samsung has unveiled the Exynos 9825, the processor that will likely power the Galaxy Note 10 launching later today. It's the first smartphone chip built using 7-nanometer EUV (extreme ultra-violet) silicon manufacturing that Samsung unveiled back in October 2018. The chip is nearly identical to the Exynos 9820, which was built using 8-nanometer LPP tech. The new chip will likely be more powerful and efficient, but Samsung has yet to say by how much.
AMD partner leaks two mid-range Navi GPUs
AMD is set to announce more GPUs based on its 7-nanometer Navi tech, according to a leak from Sapphire, one of its largest graphics card partners. At Computex, CEO Lisa Su will reportedly unveil the Navi XT that can best the NVIDIA RTX 2070 for $499. AMD will also launch the Navi Pro, with performance between the RTX 2060 and RTX 2070 for $399. The Radeon VII, meanwhile, will remain AMD's flagship GPU.
Major AMD chip supplier will no longer make next-gen chips
GlobalFoundries, which manufactures AMD's current Ryzen and Radeon chips, has surprisingly announced that it will stop all development work on next-gen 7-nanometer processors. Furthermore, it has no plans to develop future 5- and 3-nanometer technology, either. The company (which spun off from AMD in 2009) said it simply can't afford to spend billions of dollars developing new lines to keep up with its main rivals, Samsung and TSMC. Instead, it will stick to current-generation 12/14-nanometer processes and expand product offerings around that tech.
Apple's new iPhones may have the first 7-nanometer chips
Apple's new chip for the next-gen iPhones is smaller than its predecessors -- it's also already in production, according to a new report by Bloomberg. Cupertino's manufacturing partner, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., has reportedly started mass producing the 7-nanometer chip that was created to be faster and more efficient than the 10-nanometer design (used for the iPhone 8 and X) it's replacing. It will enable faster app loading times and longer battery life, which are qualities that can convince buyers to get an iPhone instead of a Galaxy S or any other device from its competitors.
AMD is gearing up for 7-nanometer CPUs and graphics cards
Intel recently told investors that its 10-nanometer "Cannon Lake" chips won't be ready until 2019, but by then, it might get leapfrogged by its PC arch-rival. AMD told investors that it's sampling next-gen Zen 2 processors with 7-nanometer tech in preparation for a launch in 2019. The company is also testing a Radeon Instinct machine learning graphics cards that use 7-nanometer Vega-based technology. The GPUs will be manufactured by TSMC, said AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su, but the company will also use Global Foundries, presumably for processors and other products.
