It seems all anyone can talk about this week is Grand Theft Auto 5 – we're partly responsible – but the weekly PSN update has plenty of content for those who enjoy experiences outside of stealing old lady's purses and running over pedestrians in Los Santos. Real Boxing makes its PS Vita debut this week, pre-orders are now open for Need for Speed: Rivals and Capcom Fighting Evolution joins the PS2 Classics ranks. PS Plus members get a pair of freebies in Ico on PS3 and Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, compatible with PSP and PS Vita. There's also a host of discounts this week, including cheap downloads of Sleeping Dogs, both Kane & Lynch games, PixelJunk Monsters: Ultimate HD and perhaps the most tempting deal of them all: massive JRPG Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch for a mere $20.

  • PS Plus gets free GTA: Liberty City Stories, Ico tomorrow

Tomorrow, when the PlayStation Store updates, PlayStation Plus subscribers will be able to access two new free games: Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories and Ico. GTA: LIberty City Stories, which originally launched on the PSP in 2005, is compatible with both PSP and PS Vita. The game is set three years before the events of Grand Theft Auto 3 and follows mafioso Toni Cipriani's return to Liberty City after lying low for a few years. Ico, a PS3-compatible port of the PS2 classic, is centered around a young boy born with horns on his head. Seeing as how this is a bad omen amongst his tribe, a few warriors from his village seal the boy up in the crypt of a massive castle, but he soon discovers he's not alone: A girl who speaks a foreign language is also trapped here and the two soon work together to escape. Of course, tomorrow's PSN update will yield a new series of discounts for PS Plus members as well. Sleeping Dogs will be down to $10, Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days will be down to $8 and Pixel Junk Monsters: Ultimate HD will be up for $12. The Kickstarter campaign to fund the third studio album for Tommy Tallarico's Video Games Live is a success. The pledge drive has surpassed its goal of $250,000 today, within its final 24 hours of the pledge drive. Video Games Live is a confluence of video game music and live spectacle, usually a touring live concert series where musicians cover select tracks from video game soundtracks while gameplay is projected on a massive screen. There are currently two Video Games Live albums, each available on iTunes. The target release date for this third studio album is February 18, 2014. Some planned compositions already outed include pieces from Street Fighter 2, the Monkey Island series, Skyrim, Journey, Shadow of the Colossus, Beyond Good and Evil, Tetris, Silent Hill 2, World of Warcraft and Diablo 3.

  • Disgaea 4 Return picks up an official Japanese release date

Disgaea 4 Return will make its Japanese debut on January 30, 2014, according to a Famitsu report translated by Siliconera. Like the PSP's Disgaea 2: Dark Hero Days and the Vita's Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention, Disgaea 4 Return is a portable update to 2011's Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten. It's currently unknown what additions the game will see in its Vita incarnation, though if prior portable adaptations are anything to go by, you can expect new characters, new stages and a host of new items and equipment to complement the basic story elements found in its PlayStation 3-exclusive predecessor. There is currently no word on when (or if) Disgaea 4 Return might reach Western territories, though the series' popularity in North American and European regions should ensure it receives an English-language localization at the very least.

  • Report: G4 spared an Esquire Network makeover

NBC Universal has announced video games cable channel G4 will no longer be converted into the Esquire Network. An exclusive report on The Hollywood Reporter calls out NBC Universal's Style channel as the unlucky recipient of an Esquire makeover, which will see the now female-focused channel shifting its focus toward mature men. As a result of this news, G4 will continue to operate as-is for the foreseeable future. The announcement to convert G4 into the Esquire Network came in February, when NBC Universal called out an April 22 re-branding. A week prior to that planned launch, NBC Universal pushed back the launch of the Esquire Network to an unspecified date.

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan is holding a livestream press conference in an hour, which you can watch right here, above this cluster of text. Convenient. Now that we know the PS4 is launching on November 15 in North America and have a list of launch window games, will Sony finally announce those details for Japan? There isn't much else to reveal about the next generation of PlayStation. Will the PS3 and PS Vita be in attendance? We're not sure what to expect, so keep an eye on the front page for all the pertinent details. Update: It's all over, but there's a replay of the conference for your watching enjoyment.

  • Trails in the Sky coming to Steam, Carpe Fulgur translating sequel for PSP and PC

Indie localization studio Carpe Fulgur (Recettear, Fortune Summoners) is heading up an English translation of Falcom's JRPG Trails in the Sky SC for a PSP and Steam release in 2014, the team announced today. The project is developed in collaboration with XSEED Games, who previously published a localized version of The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky for the PSP in North America in 2011. "This marks many things for us: our largest and perhaps most 'important' game to date, the proper realization of the other half of our business model, and the end of our long silence," Carpe Fulgur founder Andrew Dice explains. Dice notes that the commercial success of the Ys series on Steam paved the way for Trails in the Sky SC's localization. "Though [Carpe Fulgur] did not participate directly in the localization of [Ys: The Oath In Felghana], I, myself, did have a small hand in making that release happen," he writes. "Getting Felghana, and its siblings, onto Steam to help prove a market even existed for a product like SC was pivotal to the project moving forward. There were so many pitfalls that the project could have faced that announcing it would have been, until very recently, premature." The series will launch on Steam as "two separate, back-to-back installments," publisher XSEED notes. A port of the first entry in the Trails in the Sky series will hit PC platforms this winter.

  • Sony adds mobile billing option to PlayStation Store, SEN

In addition to credit cards, pre-paid giftcards and PayPal, the PlayStation Store and Sony Entertainment Network now support a "mobile billing" option for buying Hatsune Miku DLC, episodes of Teen Wolf, Music Unlimited subscriptions and whatever else the kids are into these days. When adding funds to your virtual wallet through either the PS3's PlayStation Store or SEN's Account Management site, selecting the "Use Mobile" option will initiate the procedure. After receiving and confirming a text message (standard carrier rates apply, natch), the amount added to your wallet will either be tacked onto your phone bill, or deducted from your pre-paid phone account if that's how your plan swings. We're still holding out for a poultry-based bartering system. How many chickens do you think Battlefield 4 DLC is going to cost?

Cory Barlog, who you may know as the BAFTA-winning writer and game director on God of War 2, has returned to Sony Santa Monica after leaving the studio in late 2007. In his half-announcement, half-industry travel diatribe on the PlayStation Blog, Barlog reveals he's already working on a secret project he can't talk about yet - something "freaking huge." "We're putting together a team as I type this, an Ocean's 11 kind of thing," he wrote on the PlayStation Blog. "We are searching the world high and low for the best of the BEST to come and be on the ground floor of this endeavor." Balrog joined Sony's Santa Monica Studios in 2003 as animation director on the original God of War. His most recent work involved directing cinematics on Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider reboot.
