If the upcoming Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo Wii U and 3DS has you jonesing for a similar arena fighter featuring Sega's classic characters, you'll want to check out Sega Master System Brawl (direct download link), a recently updated homebrew release for the Sega Genesis and Mega Drive. Kids who grew up on the Sega Master System (our own Alexander Sliwinski among them) will recognize several featured cast members, including Alex Kidd, Wonder Boy in Monster Land star Tom-Tom, and Shinobi's Joe Musashi. The latest version's roster also includes characters and backdrops from a selection of lesser-known Master System greats like Kung-Fu Kid and the Castlevania-inspired Vampire: Master of Darkness. Creator "Bonaf" tells Sega Nerds that future updates will add playable characters like JJ from Zillion, Dynamite Dux's Bean, and Sonic the Hedgehog himself. Sega Master System Brawl is available as a downloadable ROM file, and is playable via emulation and on original Sega Genesis hardware using a flash cartridge. [Video: Bonaf]

Also, don't ogle too much over the scantily-clad anime girls; you do know that they're video game consoles, right?

Alex Kidd comes to the rescue on the Virtual Console this week. It's more of his usual hijinks in the latest Alex Kidd entry from Sega, as players must call upon the powers of Shinobi -- including platforming, dodging incoming throwing stars and chopping dudes up something fierce. Check it all out in the latest episode of VC in Brief above! Alex Kidd in Shinobi World (Sega Master System, 1 player, 500 Wii Points) Oh, and big ups to reader Cody Borst for creating that sweet new intro. Heck of a job, Cody! Every week, we like to check out what's new on the Virtual Console. We offer these videos as a sort of taste to help you decide whether or not you would want the game in question. We also toss in our own two cents because we're pushy jerks like that.

Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars (Sega Master System, 1 player, 500 Wii Points)We say: do not downloadAlex Kidd: The Lost Stars hides a very basic and redundant gameplay formula beneath its outer coat of bright pixels and wonderfully imaginative enemies. It's a game that hasn't held up too well over time, and will likely serve as nothing more than a reminder of one's childhood for a few minutes. Skip this one. To NES-only kids, Sega's Alex Kidd games must have seemed like a really weird choice for Sega's flagship series: some rambling platformers with a not-so-appealing main character, completely different settings each time, and rock-scissors-paper for some reason. To people who grew up with Master Systems at home, however, they were ... still really weird. The Lost Stars is the most Mario-like of the bunch, with simple running and jumping in place of Miracle World's block-breaking and janken, but it is really, really freaky. Like "nude, mohawked enemies who shake their butts at you, somehow resulting in skull projectiles" freaky.Super Darius 2 lacks rump shaking, but manages to be a good shooter regardless. Both games are out in Japan on the Virtual Console today. Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars (Master System, 1 player, 500 Wii Points) Super Darius 2 (PC Engine Super CD-ROM, 1 player, 800 Wii Points) The single WiiWare release is Shin'en's Fun! Fun! Minigolf, whose title actually increases the fun content of the game. Fun! Fun! Minigolf (1-4 players, 1,000 Wii Points)

  • Virtual Console picks Burning Fight with Alex Kidd

With the United States swept up in political debate and the world's reliance on oil becoming increasingly problematic, we welcome the Virtual Console's desire to take us back to a simpler and easier time. A time when sprites were celebrated, power-ups were plentiful and men were all called "Ryu." A time when every problem could be solved by the calculated and swift application of a fist. Punching time. Alex Kidd in Miracle World (Master System, 1 player, 500 Wii Points): Alex Kidd will stop at nothing to rescue his brother. Leaping across deadly chasms, punching through solid rock and murdering birds with his bare hands -- he's a monster! We can't really identify with that, but don't let that stop you. "Please buy the things that you like." Burning Fight (Neo Geo, 1-2 players, 900 Wii Points): Predominantly pugilistic protagonists patrol parks and pound on pesky perpetrators in this post-90s punk-bashing punchfest. POW!

  • New imports toddling onto American Virtual Console

Early last month, we found OFLC listings for two import games: Gley Lancer, which has since been released in Europe and Australia, and Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa. A release of the obscure platformer anywhere outside of Japan seemed incongruous enough, but now, bafflingly, it's planned for a North American release as well, though there's no guarantee it'll show up any time soon. Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa, in case (for some reason) you aren't familiar with it, is a Famicom Disk System platformer starring a baby with a rattle. Both Gley Lancer and Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa are now rated by the ESRB, along with non-imports City Connection and Alex Kidd in Miracle World. Unfortunately, there's no sign of Gley Lancer's Hanabi Festival cohorts like Gradius II, Star Parodier, and Cho Aniki.

Japan's Virtual Console releases today are, literally, infinitely more awesome than our domestic lineup, because they exist. This week was Nintendo of America's turn to take a break from VC games to promote WiiWare, so any Virtual Console game that came out in Japan this week looks that much better in comparison to nothing.Even without the easy advantage, the lineup is not bad at all. Bubble Bobble is a total classic, as is Alex Kidd in Miracle World. And Martial Champion, Konami's Street Fighter II-era fighter, is the kind of previously unknown oddity we love to see on the VC. Sega's one-time flagship game, Alex Kidd in Miracle World, was recently revealed as one of the planned May VC releases in Japan. According to an OFLC rating, it's headed to Australia as well, and from there ... the other regions, probably! The Sega Master System platformer was once built into SMS systems, and now thanks to the Virtual Console, it'll be built into Wiis as well. That's kind of an interesting historical parallel.Alex Kidd is notable for pioneering the rock-paper-scissors style gameplay seen in many fighting games and RPGs, in which certain attacks are especially effective against certain opposing attacks or defenses. Except in Alex Kidd, instead of elemental weaknesses or high/low attacks, boss fights were literally rock-paper-scissors.[Via Aussie-Nintendo]

  • Rumor: an exiled mascot returns to Sega Superstars Tennis

    01.18.2008

Sega Nerds posted an apparent Game Informer scan that holds very exciting information for, well, Sega nerds. The magazine's writeup of Sega Superstars Tennis (which fails to mention the DS version of the game, for some reason) casually mentions Alex Kidd as a playable character.Poor Alex got knocked out of his totally sweet job as Sega's go-to mascot when they decided to get all edgy and bring in that hedgehog thing. Since then, he's been in retirement, showing up only as capsule toys in Shenmue and as, well, his disgraced self in Segagaga, working in the company store. Amazingly, the magazine also asserts that the game will be playable online, but that could be a mistake (since it's listed as 'Up to 4-Player via WiiConnect24'). That would just be the icing on the (Sega-logo-shaped) cake for us. We already love you, Sega Superstars Tennis.

Four new games up this week on the VC, and despite the fact that three of them are from Sega's Mega Drive, Nintendo still manages a fair amount of diversity in this week's selection. By diversity, we mean that they don't all involve outer space or badassery ... well, okay, you got us. These games actually are about space and/or fighting, because what the Virtual Console really needed was more beatdowns. In space. Sega continues to throw its support toward Nintendo's Virtual Console by announcing three new titles that will likely be coming in the next few weeks: Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle, Wonder Boy in Monster World and a 2-dimensional version of Virtua Fighter 2.Unfortunately, it is not the Virtua Fighter 2 that one might hope for. While the title was made originally for the arcade and Saturn, Sega is bringing the Genesis version to the Virtual Console. This far inferior version did not have an 3D engine and instead opted to approximate the renderings in 2D. It also excluded new characters Shun Di and Lion. Is this perhaps what spawned that Sega Saturn on Virtual Console rumor? It was around this time last month that Sega announced its releases for March, so expect to see these titles arrive within the coming weeks.

With every new video release for a Sega Genesis Collection game, I continue to get filled with more and more nostalgic memories. We've already seen videos of Columns, Ecco and Alex Kidd. Well, there's a new kid on the block with a Kid Chameleon video that has just been released. Released in May 1992, you may remember Kid Chameleon as that silly platformer with the kid who wore a variety of masks, each transforming his features and giving him special powers. There was even a goalie mask, a la Jason Vorhees, that enabled Kid Chameleon to throw axes. You'll be able to enjoy Kid Chameleon and more than 30 other old-school Genesis titles Nov. 7.[Via IGN]
