Core i7-packin' Clevo D900F gaming laptop hands-off
We're not sure if Clevo has had to deal with trade show thievery in the past, but its Core i7-equipped D900F was locked down tight at CeBIT. Nevertheless, we stopped by -- camera in hand -- to have a look, and what we saw was something we'd never, ever want on our laps for more than 120 seconds. We also saw a ridiculously potent LAN party rig, so we suppose there's some truth to that "eye of the beholder" thing our parents keep mentioning. Eurocom lays claim to Core i7-equipped Clevo D900F
Remember all those Clevo laptops revealed last month? While we're expecting more information at CeBIT 2009, those crazy Canadians at Eurocom have gone ahead and spilled the beans on the 17-inch D900F. As conjectured, the 11.9-pound behemoth's packing an equally-mighty Intel Core i7 processor in 2.66, 2.93 and 3.2GHz varieties. It's also got three 500GB hard drives totaling 1.5TB of space, 8GB DDR3 RAM, an NVIDIA G280 GPU, and a Blu-ray burner. Launch date is May 1, although according to Notebook Reviews we shouldn't expect to get our hands on it until Q4 2009. No word on pricing, but we suspect this powerhouse is gonna burn a giant hole in our pockets from both the inside and out.[Via Notebook Reviews]
Battle of the 3+ megapixel cameraphones
Comparing cameraphone image quality can be a tough nut; apart from obvious things like poor focus or grainy quality, it can be a pretty subjective beast. PhoneArena went wild with high end handsets to give us a "thousand-angle" view of what it takes to stand out in an über (notice the umlauted u? We don't do that often, so this is serious business) shootout between three 3 megapixel cams -- including the D900, K800, and N93i -- and the KG920 and N95 at 5 megapixels. Each handset is put through a series of grueling tests including shooting outdoors, night shots, and macro mode with points awarded based on how they fare in each challenge. Maxian goes Matrix with the D900 "Neo" PMP
We're not really sure what kind of PMP Keanu Reeves would have sported in the Matrix films had he not been so busy saving the world and stuff, but we're almost sure that he would have eschewed the Maxian D900 "Neo" in favor of a model with some internal storage capacity -- after all, we didn't see a lot of SD cards laying around Zion. For those of you with readier access to flash memory, however, the 4.3-inch Neo might be just the player you've been looking for, what with its 800 x 480 pixel resolution, 400:1 contrast ratio, and 200 cd/m² brightness. You're also getting a built-in DMB tuner, Burr Brown DAC, built-in speakers, and a kickstand; and because this device is powered by WinCE 5.0 and features an 802.11b/g radio, we assume that you can do the email / web browsing thing as well. As far as codec support goes, there's WMV, DivX, XviD, MPEG-2, and H.264 on the video side and MP3, OGG, FLAC, and APE on the audio tip. Unfortunately, there's not much chance that you'll see Neo tearing it up at your local electronics store, but if you simply must own a device named after a Matrix character, HTC's Trinity may help fill the void.[Via DAPreview]
Hands-on with some Samsung Ultra Editions
While Samsung was looking the other direction we caught a quick hands-on of the Ultra Edition 12.9 (aka D900) slider. It's as thin as they say (ok, thinner), with a slick slider spring, fast input response, and looks to write home about. We may not all be in agreement over Samsung's choice of user interfaces, but somehow we think few will take issue with this sucker. Click on for some more shots.
Samsung's Ultra Edition 9.9, 12.9, 6.9: World's slimmest cellphones launched
Get ready Guinness 'cause Samsung just launched an entire series of "World's slimmest" handsets. Sure, we've seen the D830 clam, X820 candybar, and FCC approved D900 slider before, only now they've been turned-out onto that mean global scene official, spec'd, and rebadged with their ultra-slim, millimeter measurements right in the name: the Ultra Edition 9.9 (D830), 12.9 (D900), and 6.9 (X820) pictured left-to-right. The UE 9.9 brings tri-band (900/1800/1900MHz) GPRS/EDGE, a 2 megapixel cam with auto-focus and flash, a 2.3-inch 240x320 262k TFT main display (0.8-inch 92x16 grayscale external), Bluetooth, 80MB embedded memory with MicroSD expansion, MP3/AAC media player, and even an MPEG4 recorder with TV-out jack slammed into this world's slimmest flip. The UE 6.9 brings pretty much the same network coverage, cam, Bluetooth, media capabilities, and on-board memory as the 9.9 but had to forgo the microSD card and flash while dropping down to a 1.9-inch 176x220 262k TFT display in order to slip into that world's slimmest, 6.9-mm, 2.33-ounce dress. The relatively plump UE 12.9 takes advantage of all that, uh, roominess to squeeze in quad-band GPRS/EDGE, a 3.13 megapixel shooter, 2.1-inch 240x320 262k TFT, that good media lovin' we've already seen, Bluetooth with A2DP stereo audio support, and 80MB with microsSD expansion. Yeah, that makes it the world's slimmest slider, er, with 3 megapixel camera -- kind of a stretch, but that's how Sammy likes to roll. They didn't bother with drop dates, countries, or prices but the fact that the press release hit their English site gives us hope for this Samsung triptych to drop in the US sometime this year.
