This Japanese VR arcade put me inside 'Mario Kart'

Back when Bandai Namco opened its first VR arcade in Tokyo last April, I was keen to check out its various HTC Vive-powered VR games. My first ride there would have been Gundam VR: Daiba Assault, just so I could get a taste of what it's like hitching a ride on a Gundam's hand. The problem was by the time I got to the city the following month, this pop-up store already had a three-month waiting list, and I never got around to visiting before it closed in October. Luckily, as of last Friday, VR Zone is back in new form. Not only is it now the world's largest VR arcade, but it's also moved to Shinjuku, a more accessible downtown area in Tokyo. And this time, it's staying for two years. More importantly, the arcade has added some widely anticipated games that may sound familiar to you -- namely, Mario Kart Arcade GP VR, Dragon Ball VR: Master the Kamehameha and Evangelion VR: The Soul Seat. As a bonus, Gundam VR has also been brought over from the previous site.

It's been 20 years since Shinji first piloted Unit-01 in the apocalyptic mecha anime Neon Genesis Evangelion. The series is still incredibly popular, and to celebrate its anniversary there's a new NGE-themed Android phone for megafans to drool over. It's called the SH-M02-EVA20 and boasts a dazzling purple and green gradient on the back, contrasted with the white outline of Shinji's robot fighter. The power and volume buttons are bright orange and the entire device slips into a case that looks like a piece of Unit-01's armour. It'll cost 84,240 yen ($705) and only 30,000 are being produced -- to be in with a chance of buying one, you'll have to apply through the Japanese convenience store 7-Eleven. The first 5,000 are expected to ship in December, followed by the remainder in April next year.

Having already joined forces with Batman and Hello Kitty, hyper-addictive puzzle roleplaying game Puzzle And Dragons will next feature the giant robots and angsty teens of the Evangelion anime series. The event begins on February 24 in Japan, with the rest of world following suit in March. As with the previous crossover efforts, this event will see Evangelion characters appear in the game as party members with their own, unique sets of attacks and abilities. Puzzle And Dragons will also receive a new Rare Egg machine shaped like the EVA-01, as well as an unknown number of Evangelion-themed Ultimate Evolutions. Like all Puzzle And Dragons crossover events, this new content will be added to the game at no charge to players. That said, this is a promotional effort designed to highlight the ongoing Evangelion reboot, Rebuild of Evangelion, so don't be surprised if you find appropriate ads within the puzzle hit. We've seen Neon Genesis Evangelion-branded devices for quite awhile now, and as a testament to the garish-hued series' longevity, Pentax has announced a special edition, show-themed Q10 series of its own. It'll release a mere 1,500 of the models in Evangelion heroine shades, starting with the Eva-01 model shown above at a price of 59,800 Yen ($660 or so). Besides showing your love for '90s anime, that sum will get you a 12.4-megapixel, mirrorless interchangeable shooter capable of Full HD video, while filling out the already-bounteous Q10 color choices from the hue-loving outfit. Stateside fans of the show will likely be disappointed though -- it'll only be sold in Japan, starting in April. Check the source to see the other colors.

Sharp's heavily customized NERV Edition SH-06D phone finally has preorder and release date info on Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo, and Neon Genesis Evangelion fanboys will want to get there early. It appears there will only be 10,000 of the phones available, with 3,000 sold via NTT DoCoMo's online store starting June 29th over three days, with 1,000 of them going on sale each day at noon. The rest will be sold at other retailers with preorders kicking off June 16th and although there's no price specified, we're expecting it to be around 25,000 - 30,000 yen with a two year contract. As we saw when the phone was announced in March, it features a heavily customized case, hardware buttons and 3D Android 2.3 skin designed to reflect its heritage. Getting one may require some camping out either in front of a store or on the carrier's website (in Japan of course, we don't expect to see any of these overseas), but at least it's got to be easier than life in Tokyo-3. Check out an in-universe video look at how NERV and NTT DoCoMo supposedly came together to develop the collectible's unique features after the break and our impressions of an unskinned SH-06D here.%Gallery-157463%

If someone offered you the chance to buy a Neon Genesis Evangelion NERV-branded phone, you'd jump at it right? After all, there's nothing better than pretending you live under constant threat of alien attack, or that the teenage clone of your dead mother could turn into a giant and... moving on. Sharp, NTT DoCoMo and Gainax teamed up to produce this SH-O6D with a custom case, new hardware buttons and a (as yet unfinished) skinned version of Gingerbread that resembles the readouts you're likely to see in the depths of Tokyo-3. See America? This is how you appeal to fans, by making the tiniest amount of extra effort, rather than just slapping a logo on the bottom of whatever regular handset you're selling.

  • Evangelion Sound Impact trailer shows six rhythm minigames, one awful pun

We were really excited about finding out what the Grasshopper-developed Evangelion game would look like -- and what Akira Yamaoka's new soundtrack would sound like, and so we went to the newly opened official site ... only to find that the video was region-locked. Way to reinforce the message that we're not getting this game, Namco. Luckily, Andriasang found a YouTube capture of the trailer, allowing those of us outside Evangelion's native land to see the quick hints of the rhythm minigames included in the PSP game. We can also see that it's officially called "3nd Impact," which is a pun on the Japanese word for the number three, "san." So .... "san-nd impact." This has been your Pun Education Moment.

It's not often we'd rush to post about a Japan-only licensed anime game for PSP ... but the latest Evangelion game revealed by Famitsu is a little unusual. Rebuild of Evangelion Sound Impact, is, as the title suggests, a rhythm game based on the Evangelion anime series. It's also being developed by Grasshopper Manufacture, led by Doshin the Giant creator Kazutoshi Iida. It also has over 30 tracks of music from the series, arranged by Akira Yamaoka. If you were, separately, a fan of Grasshopper Manufacture, Yamaoka, and Evangelion, well, now those fandoms are connected, and you're freaking the hell out. We're, um, guessing. Rebuild of Evangelion Sound Impact is due for release in Japan September 29, with two separate special editions containing either a soundtrack, or a soundtrack plus a t-shirt and headphones. Good thing the PSP is region free!

If you thought Cellius was finally going to bear a new game thanks to yesterday's Evangelion reveal ... then you're going to feel as crushed as we are upon hearing this. The Evangelion project isn't a game, but yet another anime-linked service, much like the previously shown Gundam VOD thing -- and honestly, it's even less fascinating than the Gundam one. For ¥800 a month, starting June 6, Japanese PS3 owners can get a 3D news reader for their system which features Misato from Evangelion. ... Still with us? Good, because we're about to hit the only interesting part of this story: Misato's voice will be completely computer-generated. Namco chose to go this way since it was deemed impossible to hire a voice actor for everyday news reading. According to Famitsu (via Andriasang), Cellius is using Ruby Talk to make the incredibly life-like voice for Misato. Although this feature sounds rather nice, it's not enough to justify shelling out eight dollars a month. For once, this is something Japan can keep for itself.Source: AndriasangSource: Famitsu

According to Kotaku, an advertisement found in the Blu-ray version of the Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone anime hints at a new Neon Genesis Evangelion title for PS3. While great news for EVA fans, there's more to this story than just the possibility of a new game -- we're also talking about the return of Cellius. Cellius, Namco-Bandai and Sony's joint venture from 2007, has been out of the news for two years (with the exception of a small showing a few months ago). This Evangelion game appears to be the first title to have come out of the Sony-Namco union. It's not exactly what we were expecting, but it's a start.

In spite of its pretentious musings on existentialism, Evangelion has provided anime fans with tons of memorable fights. This debut trailer of Evangelion: JO, a PS2/PSP action game, kicks up the nostalgia factor with its brilliant recreations of classic franchise moments. Based on "You Are (Not) Alone," JO finally gives players what they've wanted for years: a real Evangelion action game where you can take full control of the mechs. The combat already looks pretty furious, and the style of the anime is amazingly recreated on the PS2/PSP platforms. We hope someone picks this up for Stateside release.[Via PSPHyper]

Finally, an Evangelion game to get excited about! This isn't a dating sim, or a card game -- this is a real adventure game that looks to do the series justice by placing you in the cockpit of one of anime's most iconic mechs. This PSP adventure is based on the first film in the new theatrical remakes. Players will have to take part in Shinji's school life, but Famitsu also shows some inspired action sequences. Shooting seems to take place from both third-person over-the-shoulder views and first-person cockpit views. It also seems as though QTEs spice up the more cinematic battles. Overall, it looks good -- but will it ever see release stateside?[Via PSPHyper]

Fans of the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion will be getting a treat for their PSPs this coming April 9 in Japan. The PS2 visual novel Neon Genesis Evangelion: Koutetsu no Girlfriend will be going portable bringing the nearly three-year old software to the handheld. Like a lot of games released in Japan, this title is getting both a regular and limited edition release; they're both priced respectively at ¥3,990 ($44) and ¥6,090 ($67). Oh, by the way, this is CERO rated: B (12 yrs-old+) so there's nothing naughty here despite the image, sorry![Via Impress Watch]

The DS found itself back in cozy old third place in this week's chart, as the hype from Metal Gear Solid 4 died down a bit in Japan: PSP: 59,531 (5,325) Wii: 41,037 (4,527) NDS: 36,599 (2,602) PS3: 20,336 (54,975) PS2: 6,346 (951) Xbox 360: 2,555 (392) Meanwhile, Let's Make a Pro Baseball Team's steady climb back into the top ten makes us wonder if supply just wasn't meeting demand a few weeks earlier, when the game fell out of the top thirty. Yet overall, the DS had a relatively boring week in terms of software, with no exciting new releases to congratulate or poke fun at (unless you consider the budget-priced re-release of Puyo Puyo 15th Anniversary "exciting" and "new").If you want to see what Japanese gamers were buying last week, though, just click on past the break.

Just as we were starting to get comfortable with the DS coming in third consistently on the Japanese hardware charts, Metal Gear Solid 4 came out and helped push our favorite handheld down to fourth. Fourth! Meaning, it only did better than the PS2 and 360. Snaaaaaaaaaaaaaaake! DS hardware did get a little boost, though, despite the fact that not much new software made its way into the charts: Playstation 3: 75,311 (64,455) PSP: 64,675 (2,659) Wii: 45,564 (925) Nintendo DS: 39,201 (4,181) PlayStation 2: 7,297 (1,018) Xbox 360: 2,163 (117) There were some surprises this week, as Let's Make a Pro Baseball Team! found itself back in the top thirty (so did Pokémon Diamond). But, you can just see all the hot software action for yourself after the break.
