If you want to find nearby events online, you often have to go directly to dedicated services like Bandsintown or Eventbrite... or worse, flip through the calendar on your favorite nightclub's web page. Why can't you just search the web and get some timetables? Google is enabling just that. It's adding an event search feature that lets you sift through happenings based on where and when they take place. If you're hunting for upcoming jazz concerts or just want to know what's going on this weekend, you don't have to visit specific sites.

The company has been tweaking the social platform since that change and today its announcing the latest updates. First, events are back on Google+. Starting January 24th, one of the more handy features the social network had to offer will return. The means you will be able to create and join events on the web, but the tool won't be part of G Suite right now.

It's taken a bit more than two months, but Facebook has finally brought its standalone Events app to Android. Having debuted in October this year, Events lets you stalk see happenings that your friends are interested in attending, as well as affairs hosted by Pages you like and updates from parties you've already RSVPed to. You can also look for recommendations of upcoming things to do based on time, location and your interests.

Instagram wants you to know it's more than just photos; it's about videos too. That's why the app has been investing quite a bit in surfacing them more in its Explore tab. Earlier this year, it added a video channel for easier to find clips and further sorted them into 23 different categories, such as dogs, comedy and travel. Now Instagram has added yet another way to find interesting videos: through events.

Navigation apps like Apple Maps, Google Maps and Waze are good for letting you know when you're approaching a traffic jam. Waze is taking that task a bit further with its new Global Event Partner Program. The company is teaming up with organizers of big events like marathons and pro sports to keep you from experiencing unnecessary delays. Those partners will now be able to use the Waze Closure tool to input any scheduled closures ahead of an event. TechCrunch reports that event organizers will be able to add details like turn restrictions, lane reversals, parking locations for more than 65 million users.

You can already buy things on Facebook, and later this month, you'll be able to snag concert tickets without leaving the site, too. Ticketmaster VP Dan Armstrong told BuzzFeed in an interview that the ticket retailer would begin selling admission to live music and other events through the social network's site and mobile app before April's end. While Ticketmaster isn't the first to coordinate purchases from Facebook, making tickets to events available on the social channel seems like a good move for both companies.

Facebook has been ramping up its Events pages as of late, and a recent patent application shows another use for those listings. In the paperwork, the social network explains how Events pages can also serve as a hub for ride sharing. Instead of the usual Going, Not Going, and Interested RSVPs on an event's page, you would have the option to say whether or not you plan to drive. If you do, you can input details as to how many passengers you can take, if you just want to offer a ride to friends and what time you'll be leaving.

If you live in a major city and usually spend your evenings and weekends bored at home, then you might want to give Facebook's new Events feature a try. Following on its recent commitment to improving its events calendar, the social media giant has just announced the ability to browse upcoming happenings by category -- they include Music, Food & Drinks, Nightlife, Sports & Fitness and more -- in ten major US cities. They are New York, NY; Los Angeles, CA; Chicago, IL; Washington, DC; Boston, MA; San Francisco, CA; Dallas, TX; Seattle, WA; Miami, FL and Houston, TX. You can look up what's happening around you or any of the other locales, which should be handy if you're making travel plans. The feature is currently only available on Facebook's iOS app -- just look for it in the Events dashboard -- with a rollout to Android some time in the near future.

  • Uber event service makes sure you get home from the party

If you're hosting a big shindig, you frequently need to find ways to get people home at the end of the night -- and a shuttle bus may be a waste if only some of your guests actually need it. This is where Uber might come to the rescue. It just announced the US rollout of UberEvents, a service that lets organizers pay for bulk rides to and from their venues. All you do is create an event and hand out codes to your attendees. You only pay when someone uses the code, and you can specify just when and where those codes apply so that there's no room for abuse. If you're determined to host the biggest party you can and don't want friends either paying for their own rides or crashing at your place, this might hit the spot.

Our friend Mark Setrakian (who joined us at Engadget Expand last November) came correct with his Axis Robots, that while some find creepy, we find pretty damn exciting.

Sure, I remember the broad strokes -- our first live meetup of the year saw 1,500 people checking out great gadgets and downing drinks in the Royale once more, and the complimentary selfie sticks floating around kept us all from taking ourselves too seriously.
