Patreon’s 3 million supporters are good news for independent creators
Patreon has had one clear goal since it launched in 2013: to help artists, influencers and internet creators make money by letting them offer membership services directly to their fans. And that effort seems to be paying off. Today, Patreon announced there are now over three million people supporting creators on its site, of which there are more than 100,000 to date. What's also notable is that the company was able to accomplish this milestone in a rapid manner, going from two to three million supporters (aka patrons) worldwide in just one year.

They'll be doled out via social media and community promotional campaigns and competitions.
Netflix hires Christie Fleischer to help it sell merchandise
Netflix has dabbled in merchandise before, but its newest hire suggests it's planning on really doubling down on its efforts. According to Netflix, Fleischer will oversee retail and licensee partnerships, publishing, interactive games, merchandising and experiential events.
YouTube is reportedly paying creators to promote new features
YouTube is paying some of its top creators up to six figures to use and promote features like subscriptions and pinned comments in chat, according to Bloomberg. The report doesn't identify the creators (the terms of their deals aren't public and they won't want to risk YouTube's ire), but given the sums involved, it's a safe bet several of the platform's biggest names are receiving the payments.
YouTube looks to merch and memberships to make creators more money
YouTube is having a busy day at VidCon 2018. Aside from launching Premieres, a feature that lets creators hype prerecorded videos with a public landing page, the company is also announcing new ways for them to make more money. For starters, channels with more than 100,000 subscribers will now have access to Memberships, which will allow viewers to pay a monthly fee of $4.99 to get exclusive access to badges, emoji, livestreams, members-only videos and shoutouts, among other perks. This is exactly what YouTube was already doing with Sponsorships, though that was available only to a select group of YouTubers. If you're a creator but don't meet the 100,000-subscriber threshold, YouTube says it hopes to bring Channel Memberships to more people in the coming months.
Patreon promises a simple solution for selling merch
If you've ever supported a Patreon campaign with merch on offer, you know how painful delivering that merch can be for everyone involved. The creator may have to suffer through hours of mailing goods, and the shipping costs can be as much of a hassle if you aren't willing to pay a stiff premium. Patreon might just tackle that problem. It just acquired the community-building company Kit, and the two are promising a "simple" solution that lets creators sell merch without doing most of the hard work. In theory, they don't have to do much more than design the products.
Snapchat is selling more than just crappy merch (updated)
Weeks ago, Snap opened up an in-app Snapchat store to sell merch, which appeared to be an attempt to open up a new revenue stream. But it looks like it will offer more than just dancing hot dogs. During yesterday's NBA All-Star game in Los Angeles, the Jordan brand held a community concert that doubled as a sneaker drop for yet-unreleased shoes, which attendees could buy by scanning a custom code using the Snapchat app.

Netflix wants its own TV merchandise empire
As the lineup of Netflix originals swells, it's no surprise to hear that the company wants to push into merchandising. As Bloomberg reports, the video streaming provider has posted a job opening for a "licensing, merchandising and promotion" senior manager, tasked with "pursuing consumer products" that will "drive meaningful show awareness." The move makes perfect sense, given the popularity of shows like House of Cards and Orange is the New Black. T-shirts, caps and mugs seem obvious; it will be interesting to see how, if at all, the company experiments.

Presenting the No Man's Sky "Explorer's Edition," a limited-run (10,000) version of the game sold exclusively by iam8bit. In it you'll find a hand-painted cast metal space ship, an enamel pin, a "diorama display backdrop," and a "mystery item" with a $10 value. Oh, and a PC game code for Steam or GOG. This September 3rd, the company will unveil merchandise in "the world's first-ever global live toy unboxing event," which will apparently play out like a "New Year's Eve style celebration" across 12 countries.
