Waze and Moovit, a transit app for trip mapping and planning, have teamed up to give commuters more options to choose from. They're launching a pilot program in the US, Brazil, Mexico and Israel that would make Waze Carpool vehicles available from within the Moovit app. This is the first time Waze Carpool has been integrated into a third-party app and the first third-party carpool offering for Moovit, as well. Moovit already has its own carpool system, but Waze has a much larger community of drivers.

Moovit, if you haven't used it before, gives you info on buses, trains and other modes of public transportation so you can plan the best route possible. It lumped in Uber with other modes of transpo in New York, Los Angeles, Rome and London back in 2015. But now the company has expanded the ride-sharing service's integration to encompass a total of 131 cities in 22 countries. So long as you're in one of those cities, you'll be able to request an Uber from within Moovit, say, if buses or trains won't get you to your destination on time.

Moovit (free) is a transit app for trip planning, live arrival info, schedules, maps, service alerts and more. It supports more than 50 cities in the US and many major cities around the world. The app covers busses, trains and Metro Subways. The app can use GPS to determine your current location, then give you a look at what transportation options are available. Click on a transit station and you'll see real time arrival times. The app includes walking directions, and alerts if there are service disruptions. You can see those in the app, or set up notifications through iOS. Moovit provides a step-by-step route to get you to your designation, including walking directions. It's pretty easy to figure out, and while it told me that there aren't any bus or train routes in my section of southern Arizona, some nearby big cities offers several options. The trip planning functions worked well. I also looked at London and Brussels and found good up to date information as well. Data for the app is provided by the transit systems, and a community-driven element (similar to Waze) provides timely information about delays. Apple Maps does not support transit directions. It's been on the Apple 'things to do ' list for some time, but Apple Maps will hand you off to 3rd party apps like Smart Ride (U.S. only) and CG Transit (free with in-app purchases) which adds Canada and Europe. People were hoping for transit information in iOS 8 but it's not there. Hope springs eternal, as Apple is adding some firepower to the Maps team and Apple has been acquiring transit apps recently so it's likely the feature is now on the front burner. Moovit is a useful app, has a wide choice of US and world cities, and will be useful for many. Moovit requires iOS 6 or later. It's optimized for the iPhone 5, but is not a universal app.
