One of the longest running unofficial services for Xbox 360 users has been shut down. MyGamerCard.net, which has been around as long as the Xbox 360 itself, has closed its virtual doors. Founder Jason Young -- known to most of us by his Gamertag, Morgon -- has posted a lengthy goodbye on the site, explaining his reasons for the shutdown, which includes the service's leaderboards. According to Young, the "love for community has been lost by Microsoft," and its many community-based projects, including the Xbox Community Developer Program, have "stagnated." He adds that some sites have been using non-kosher methods to scrape data from Xbox.com, a practice Microsoft has allegedly done little to quell, but one Young says shows a "lack of respect" nonetheless. Faced with this sort of unscrupulous competition, as well as a poor advertising environment, he was forced to shut down the service after paying half of MGC's costs himself for over a year. Both Joystiq and its community have enjoyed the ever expanding service since its inception. Initially offering GamerCards that could be posted onto websites and forums, MGC expanded to offer leaderboards, Achievement completion percentages and even daily gaming news. In fact, looking back at my tenure at Joystiq's former Xbox site, Xbox 360 Fanboy, I can testify that many of our community projects wouldn't have been possible without it. Those wishing to keep up with Young can do so on Xbox Live or Twitter.

The scheduling hasn't changed, as it's still slated for 8:00 PM GMT (check your local time), and will last for 3 hours. This is going to be big and we're proud to be an integral part of this. Even Major Nelson recognized this by letting his readers know what was going down this weekend. Remember, this is going to be your last chance to get this Achievement. So, if you missed out on Achieve360Points moderately successful attempt, go get your hands on a copy of NBA Live 07 and we'll see you online Sunday.

  • New at MGC.net: are you a completionist?

For 360 users, gamerscore is the ultimate metric. It's a quick, easily referenced and categorized example of what kind of gamer you are. At least, it used to be. Gamerscore is great as a generalization of your skills, but it doesn't tell a story. Introducing the completion leaderboard on MyGamerCard.net. Sure, you might have a high gamerscore, but how did you get it? Did you buy 10 games and complete them all, or did you rent 20 and only play them halfway? The completion leaderboard takes your gamerscore and multiplies it by your overall completion percentage. The result is an adjusted score that reflects your skill and your dedication (my adjusted score sits at a literarily relevant 1984). Think of it as the Gamerscore equivalent of the ever popular KPD (kills-per-death) ratio. So, gamerscore kings could potentially be brought down to earth, giving a boost to more modest and persistent gamers. How does your gamerscore hold up when you run it through the completion ringer?

MyGamerCard.net has a cool new feature that allows you to create custom leaderboards for any group (They ask that you not use it for your regular friends list). Obviously, the applications are endless. Imagine separate boards for alcoholics, Dr. Phil fans and readers of this blog. Start off by adding yourself to the official Xbox360Fanboy.com Leaderboard. 360 Fanboy reader Yves De Pryck has completed GooMGC version 2.0. For those that don't know, GooMGC is a Google homepage plugin that helps Live members keep track of all sorts of information. The plugin displays your GamerCard -- in a plethora of styles, via MyGamerCard.net -- as well as the GamerCards of 16 of your closest friends. Also included is a Gamerscore reference chart so you can track your exploits. And if that's not enough for you, the plugin also houses a handy MS Points converter in a variety of currencies. Just stick this puppy next to your Google reader -- tuned to the 360 Fanboy RSS, of course -- and you've got yourself a one stop shop for all of your 360 needs. Go get it and tell us what you think.
