  • XBL Games on Demand may be incompatible with retail versions

Some unsettling news now for fans of convenience: That Xbox Live Games on Demand title you just bought may not work with its retail counterpart. Specifically, CrunchGear reports that the On Demand version of Rainbow Six Vegas 2 is incompatible with the retail version. When attempting to play a cooperative session over Xbox Live, the game returned an error asking that players insert the Rainbow Six Vegas 2 disc. This error occurred regardless of who hosted the match. A call made to customer support later revealed that this is apparently a problem with several older titles. Additionally, users on the LEGO Rock Band forum report that the On Demand version of the title doesn't allow songs to be exported to other versions of Rock Band. This is understandable given that On Demand games have no manual (and thus no export code), though Harmonix notes it is "looking into" the issue. The moral of the story, as noted by Co-Optimus: If you're planning to pick up an XBL On Demand title in order to play online with someone that has the retail version, do some research first.

Major Nelson brings word that the troops of Call of Duty 3 and the elite squad of Rainbow Six Vegas 2 have infiltrated Xbox Live's "Games on Demand." Both titles go for $30 each in the US, but check your respective region for pricing. We should note that both titles cost $30 new from a store -- even less for those who find a used copy. Keep that in mind while you're trying to understand how price parity exists when there's no disc, box, shipping or manufacturing involved. It's a free Xbox Live Marketplace download day, as we get not one but TWO free chuncks of downloadable content goodness. One being free Rainbow Six Vegas 2 DLC, the other being free Guitar Hero III DLC. All free, free, free! The RSV2 "Gift Pack DLC" (no longer called the "Fan Pack") includes a set of three re-releases of the multiplayer maps Calypso Casino, Murdertown and CQB Training but now re-lit for a "darker" gaming experience. Today's free GHIII DLC is the July Fourth inspired "Top Gun Anthem" track of which we don't believe Tom Cruise will make an appearance in or would even support. Meh. Go grab your free XBLM downloads, kids, because ... you know ... they're free!Source - Free RSV2 'Gift Pack' DLCSource - Free GHIII 'Top Gun' DLC

Ubisoft recently released a video explaining some of the major changes included in their upcoming free expansion to Rainbow Six Vegas 2, and we think it's a fairly safe bet that fans will be pleased. Included in said trailer is a look at the much-requested additions that should make Call of Duty 4 feel sincerely flattered, such as the new grenade indicator and post-elite ranks, as well as the three "new" (see: re-lit and re-textured) maps which will also be made available. Also included are details concerning the new "High Stakes" mode, where health regeneration will be disabled, and where players will amass extra experience points by verbally disparaging the skills of their Low Stakes brethren. We can't wait!

Ubisoft will put out a free Fan Pack for the tactical FPS game Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2 according to their website, and you can download this via PSN starting in July. It will introduce a new gameplay option named High Stakes, which makes the game much more difficult -- radars, aim assistance and health regeneration are all out the window. Ammunition will be scarce and accuracy during moving will be lower. Furthermore, there will be three remixed levels: Calypso Casino of the original Rainbow Six Vegas, dark Murdertown and dark CQB Training. Lastly, there will be tweaks, balancing, features, new spawning and chat options, new ranks and new A.C.E.S. levels. Full list of features are on Ubisoft's site. We are glad they haven't given up on the game, but will we be able to forgive their earlier special PS3 "exclusives"?[Via GameSpot]

Read up on all the changes over at the official site. [Thanks, MisfitToy]

Surprising no one more than ourselves, several members of the staff have been spending loads of quality time with Rainbow Six Vegas 2, so it brought us plenty of joy to see that Ubisoft recently released a title update for the 360 version of the game. No, most aren't fixes to our beloved co-op, but what does it really need? More radical? Our pants are quite soiled enough, thank you very much. Those of you who prefer multiplayer matches can expect faster weapon switching, faster respawns and bevy of other changes that you can check out here. And if you play on the PS3, don't worry: A similar patch is in the works for you as well.

Good news Rainbow Six Vegas 2 gamers who've been bothered by the handful of bugs (including the achievement unlock problem) that have been making your RSV2 experience less than superb. Ubisoft sends word that they just released a RSV2 title update via Xbox Live that aims at fixing a bunch of the gameplay issues. So many fixes, we had to post the list after the break to prevent eye strain. Highlights include the fixing of the rank reset glitch, numerous achievement fixes and an improved observer mode. High five to Ubisoft for actually caring enough to get a patch out the door, even though these problems should have been caught during QA testing. Tisk, tisk.[Via xenocidic]

It may seem like just a silly promotional video for Rainbow Six Vegas 2, but we like to think of the above video as an educational film. Primarily, of course, it teaches/reminds the guys from Mega64 are really ballsy. Seriously, they're bold in a way that would make Errol Flynn want to curl up with a mug of Earl Grey and an issue of Teen Vogue. But we also learn the lengths that everyday citizens are willing to go to in the fight against terror. Terrorists can literally be dancing in front of them in Hawaiian shirts and they will still pretend to see nothing. Consider us inspired.

Ubisoft announced today that Rainbow Six Vegas 2 has engaged retail with precision and sold two million units worldwide. GameDaily reports that due to RSV2's initial sales and the continued momentum of Assassin's Creed and Games for Everyone, the publisher raised its fiscal guidance and expects net sales of €920 million ($1.54 billion) from €875 million ($1.38 billion). Ubi's CEO, Yves Guillemot, says 2008 is "off to be a record year" for the industry and company.Modest reviews didn't seem to put a damper on RSV2's initial sales with Ubisoft calling them a "better than expected start." If This is Vegas ends up selling exceptionally well -- and boy, could Midway use the sales -- we may see Vegas become the hottest video game setting since Omaha Beach.

Today, Ubisoft wanted to make it known that Rainbow Six Vegas 2 is a success, selling 2 million copies worldwide since its release a few weeks back. And Ubisoft also wanted to make it known that those 2 million sales were a big surprise, even to them. So, with RSV2's success and Assassin's Creed doing better than expected, the number crunching Ubi crew decided to increase their fiscal guidance for 2008. And that's a good thing. We love seeing everyone over at Ubi doing their happy-happy dance which they do exceptionally well when $1.5 billion in sales rains down from the gaming heavens.

Going down this weekend on Xbox Live is a Rainbow Six Vegas 2 High Stakes Weekend featuring a sweepstakes, Play & Win prizes, a PEC contest and some super entertaining Game with Developers funnery. And if the embedded "training video" that you see above hints at anything to come, then we're in for some interesting yet enjoyable good times. The weekend-o-RSV2 fun kicks of tomorrow, March 28th and runs through Sunday, March 30th, so we advise preparing by entering the RSV2 sweepstakes and getting your Play & Win registration completed. Oh, you may also want to play some RSV2 before Saturday, because that's when the Game with Developers kicks off. Good luck and be sure to show those Ubisoft Montreal "gamers" how it's done. Huzzah!
