David Reeves, who "retired" from Sony Europe last year, will take up the Mega Buster at Capcom and charge up the publisher's European operations. Reeves states he had a "close working relationship" with Capcom during his 14 years with Sony. He will replace COO Mark Beaumont in the region, who passed away suddenly earlier this year. Reeves was a very public and outspoken figure during his Sony days. He was also the executive who, back in 2007, kinda stole broke Sony's thunder by stating that the first PS3 price drop was actually a clearance sale. It'll be interesting to see how public a role Reeves takes with his new employer.

SCEE's David Reeves spoke at the DevStation developer conference last week, admitting to MCV that "there is a piracy problem on PSP." According to MCV, Reeves admits that piracy has fueled hardware sales, and of course "we are not happy about it." He told developers at the conference that Sony will "unveil new ways to combat piracy soon." But exactly how? We're not sure. This is quite possibly the first time a Sony exec has directly addressed the issue of piracy on the platform. Perhaps this is the signal of a more aggressive Sony attempting to reclaim the platform.

  • SCEE chief: PS3 to overtake Xbox in Europe by summer

Despite the PS3's late start in Europe, SCEE chief David Reeves has confidently predicted to MCV that the system is poised to overtake the Xbox 360 in cumulative European sales by late summer. "In terms of installed base in some of our major markets, such as France, Spain, Germany and Italy ... our current cumulative installed base is now higher than Xbox 360," Reeves said, adding that the PS3 outsold the 360 in all PAL territories 3-to-1 last week.Is such a turnaround possible in the time frame Reeves suggests? A quick look at VGChartz (graph shown above) does show Microsoft's European sales lead on the PS3 recently getting cut in half, from roughly 1.8 million units in July '07 to only 0.9 million units in January '08. The narrowing came almost entirely during the highly competitive holiday season, though -- since then, PS3 and 360 sales have run roughly parallel.Of course, the whole Sony/Microsoft battle might be meaningless, considering the Wii utterly dominated European sales through the 2007 holiday season. Then again, we suppose there's some pride in battling for the silver. Just ask Mitt Romney after the Iowa caucuses.

  • PS Network to become "feeder" of PSP games

How does David Reeves propose to bring more original content to the PSP? In an interview with GI.biz, the SCEE chief admitted that the PSP had too many uninspired ports of PS2 games, something they're willing to address. The source of their future inspiration will come online: from the PlayStation Network. "Honestly, probably we should have had more original PSP games, and there were some PS2 ports of course, but what you're going to see now is - on PSN there are a lot of good, original games, so the situation you might be seeing in the future is some of those games coming onto PSP. They might be shorter, but they would be far more original."Games like Calling All Cars, which was recently revealed to be coming to PSP, make a perfect match for handheld gamers, and Reeves understands that. By looking at the response titles receive on the PSN, he's able to see what will work, and what won't work, on PSP. "On PSN you get an instant reaction - 'Calling All Cars, great game, okay, can I have it on PSP?' Okay, why not?"Could that mean we'll see fan-favorite Super Rub-a-Dub on PSP in the future? One can ... only hope.

  • No Euro PS3 price cut, more bundles

According to Sony Europe President David Reeves, the PS3 will not be getting a price cut and they'll continue offering more bundles to drive sales. He says that the new bundles will go beyond the Starter Pack introduced during E3 when the US received its price chop. Reeves says they're happy with the "PAL business" and that "it's on track." In the same interview, Reeves says that reason they didn't announce any new games during their Leipzig press conference was because they didn't want to "overload" gamers. He says they're focusing on doing "pillar titles every month" because gamers "don't have huge wallets and they can't go out and buy five games at €59 all the time." That's very reasonable thinking, especially when they're European consumers who can't get a price cut.[Via PS3 Fanboy]

David Reeves, president of SCEE, spoke to MCV. about the console's surprising success. Since its launch in March, the console has sold through more than a million units in the European territories. "Early last week we went through the one million mark on PS3. And we did that in nine and a half weeks," he confirmed. He added, "That was faster than both PS2 and PSOne."Software sales have been fairly robust, with two million copies of first-party software sold in the region. Although the lineup since launch has been admittedly slim, things will definitely be picking up, with some new products to be unveiled soon: "Our big bangs will be arriving around September and October; Phil [Harrison] will be announcing these at a later date, but they will probably be in the arena of social gaming as well as more traditional games."[Via Next Gen]
