'Resident Evil 5' and '6' are coming to Nintendo Switch

You won't have to be content with older Resident Evil games on the Switch for much longer. Capcom is bringing two of its not-quite-newest survival horror titles, Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6, to Nintendo's platform sometime in the fall. It's not certain just how much will have changed with the port, although they look reasonably intact from the cursory glimpse Nintendo has offered so far. These aren't the franchise's greatest hits -- they will, however, fill in a conspicuous gap for Switch fans.

  • Resident Evil 5, Dead Rising 2 ditching GFWL for Steamworks

Capcom is planning to release updates for the Windows PC versions of Resident Evil 5, Dead Rising 2, and Dead Rising 2: Off the Record, replacing the trio's Games for Windows Live features with Steamworks support. Originally embedded in featured games as a way to manage DRM, achievements, and multiplayer support, the Games for Windows Live service began winding down after Microsoft disabled its Marketplace features last year. Though the service itself remains operational even after its rumored shutdown date, many publishers have opted to replace GFWL support with alternate solutions over the past year. Capcom announced that Steamworks support for Resident Evil 5, Dead Rising 2, and Dead Rising 2: Off the Record is coming "early next year." Players who own the Games for Windows Live versions of these three games will automatically transition to Steamworks editions following Capcom's planned updates. [Image: Capcom]

  • Report: New details on Resident Evil: Revelations 2

The November issue of Gamesmaster magazine dives deep into Capcom's upcoming spin-off sequel Resident Evil: Revelations 2 and returns with word on the game's place in Resident Evil canon, Claire Redfield's co-star Moira and more. According to Push Start, Gamesmaster claims that Resident Evil: Revelations 2 takes place between the events of 2009's Resident Evil 5 and series black sheep Resident Evil 6. Claire Redfield is the game's protagonist, but she's joined by Moira Burton, daughter of former STARS weapons specialist Barry Burton. As the game has two leading ladies, Resident Evil: Revelations 2 features both a singleplayer and co-operative campaign. Gameplay-wise, Resident Evil: Revelations 2 is said to be a return to series tradition with a pronounced focus on survival horror, as opposed to the over-the-top action of the more recent Resident Evil entries. "I want this to be both a game that doesn't lose what made its predecessor great, while also bringing something new and exciting to the Resident Evil series," said producer Michiteru Okabe. "Achieving that lofty goal by bringing together past and future will make this an itchy-tasty prospect indeed." [Image: Capcom]

Look out, it's a hungry horde of Resident Evil games infecting Day 3 of Xbox Live's Games on Demand sale, with five of the nibblers dangerously discounted. Shuffling along at half-price are Residents Evils 4-6 and Operation Raccoon City, taking 4 and 5 to to $9.99 and the other two to $19.99. Savings-wise, the pick of the bunch is Code Veronica, with today's discount digesting 75 percent of its insides and only leaving behind a stump of $4.99.As ever - well, until March 4 - there's a groaning mass of other Games on Demand at sale-severed prices, and one of those groaners is Grid. With the second Grid game nearing the finish line, $4.99 is a decent price at which to dive into Codemasters' racer series.

Capcom continued its recent financial boon with a net income of 6.6 billion yen ($72 million), up 104.9 percent, for the first nine months of its fiscal year, which will end on March 31, 2013. Capcom attributed the success to launches of major games, the growing popularity of its social games in Japan, and its newly introduced Resident Evil 5 slot machine. Sales were up 44 percent during the same period from last year. While both Resident Evil 6 and DmC: Devil May Cry saw significant reductions to their end-of-fiscal-year projections, Capcom is pleased by the performances of Dragon's Dogma, which exceeded expectations to become a million-seller last year, and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, which racked up over 600,000 sales during its first month in Japan.

Resident Evil 6 is due out next week, and to celebrate, Capcom is offering half off of either of the last two games in the series over on Steam. Both Resident Evil 5 and the non-canon spinoff Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City are available for half price, making the first one $9.99, and the second $24.99 for the base game, or $38.94 with all of the DLC included. At those prices, there's never been a better time to sign the rent agreement and let the Evil move on in. Just be careful with letting Evil be your roommate: It always leaves empty milk cartons in the fridge, and never washes the dishes, no matter what the chore list says.

  • Science picks Dead Space 2 as 360's scariest game

You could rely on your friends, game critics or helpful GameStop sales associates to tell you which games are scary, but that's so two-thousand-and-late. We're sticking with science, thanks to this helpful feature from Gamasutra, which used player feedback and biometric data to rate not only the most frightening games, but their most horrifying moments. [Update: The study itself was conducted by Vertical Slice, so if you're looking for dream jobs in the research field, that's where we'd start.) A victor was picked, but some of the study's other conclusions were more interesting. For instance: The threat of combat was typically scarier than combat itself. Also, gore, while provocative, wasn't, particularly frightening. The game that understood those concepts the best? Well, that would be Dead Space 2, which took the brass ring over Condemned, Alan Wake and Resident Evil 5. Presumably, Sherlock Holmes: Nemesis was not in the running.

Without looking, we'd like for you to tell us where all of your various and sundry Resident Evil games are located right now. Your copy of Resident Evil 4 is out of its box, lying face-up on the entertainment center? Code Veronica is in a box in the attic? Resident Evil 2 is in the oven? You clearly need a better way of keeping tabs on them -- like, for instance, having nearly all of the franchise's main entries enclosed in Capcom's recently announced 15th Anniversary Box. The bundle, which will be available in Japan through e-Capcom this September, contains the three PSOne Resident Evils, Revival Selection (the HD remastering of RE4 and Code Veronica) and soundtracks for the two games in the Revival Selection. Resident Evil 5 is not included in the package, but the Box does include a spacer in which to keep your copy. Voila! No more scratched, misplaced or broiled discs.

Starting today and running until Thursday, April 28 at 11:30am EST, Resident Evil 5 is half-off on the Games For Windows marketplace -- down to $15 from its usual $30 asking price. Sounds like a perfect opportunity to give a lonely Majini a home. Sure, they may be parasitic shells of their former selves, but that doesn't mean they don't have feelings, guys. It should be noted that this is the base edition of Resident Evil 5, sans both DLC packs: Lost in Nightmares and Desperate Escape. It also doesn't include the Versus mode.

  • Fifth Resident Evil movie in the works, scheduled for 2012

Like the zombies it's based off of, the Resident Evil movie franchise will not die. Although the fifth film has yet to be subtitled, it does have a date. "Resident Evil 5" will be in theaters -- in 3D, of course -- on September 14, 2012. There's good reason for the hastened production schedule for yet another sequel. According to Box Office Mojo, last year's Resident Evil film, Afterlife, was the highest grossing in the series, generating over $236 million, which is "about as much as the first three movies combined," the site notes. Afterlife enjoyed success in international markets and generated additional revenue through its 3D presentations. According to the report, about 80 percent of Afterlife's domestic revenue came from its extra-dimensional screenings. With the success of Resident Evil on the silver screen, it's no surprise Capcom and Sony Pictures are trying to strike gold again. In addition to Resident Evil, a Devil May Cry film is also in the works.

  • Capcom profits plummet in fiscal 2009, new strategy outlined

    09.18.2010

Capcom has released its annual report for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2010, and there's a wealth of information for those willing to plumb its 102-page depths. Net sales for Capcom's fiscal 2009 were ¥66.8 billion ($779 million), down from ¥91.8 billion ($1.07 billion) in 2008. The company saw net income of ¥2.16 billion ($25 million), its lowest since 2004 (when it saw a loss of over ¥9 billion). This marks a very sharp contrast to the previous year, when Capcom recorded net income of ¥8 billion ($93 million), its highest earnings since 2000. Capcom cited the postponement of many major titles until the following fiscal year as the cause for the decline. Given those titles included the likes of Super Street Fighter 4, we'd say that's probably accurate. Capcom isn't losing heart though, and goes on to detail its new strategy of "Single Content Multiple Usage." The company plans to leverage its video game segment (which accounts for 65.9 percent of its business) to promote products in other forms of media. As illustrated in the image above, Capcom has already done this with the Resident Evil franchise, creating books, movies and music that revolve around the brand. Capcom hopes this will reduce risk and attract "customers obtained from other business segments" to the video games these products are based on. So, does watching Milla Jovovich kill movie zombies compel you to shoot the virtual ones?

Capcom and Sony Pictures are subjecting victims to another CG Resident Evil movie: Damnation. The animated feature will be released in Japan in 2012 using that 3D tech the corporations are raving about. According to Capcom, the first Resident Evil CG film, Degeneration, has shipped over 1.6 million copies for home viewing and its limited "2-week / 3-screen theatrical release in Japan" grossed ¥40 million yen ($480K). Despite Resident Evil's celluloid excursions being reviled by critics, the series has made plenty of bank. Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D is currently the top movie at the box office.

  • Capcom USA will be proactive in preventing another 'RE5 controversy'

Seemingly at peace with the fact that it may never escape the "Resident Evil 5 is racist" flap the game stirred up last year, Capcom USA is speaking openly about measures it is taking to ensure it can offer a non-Japanese perspective on future titles. Talking with Gamasutra, the senior PR rep for the publisher's North American operation, Melody Pfeiffer, confirmed that, "Since the RE5 controversy, we have become much more aware of how important it is that we are part of the asset creation process early on so that we are able to have a say in the end product." (Implying that it didn't before.) "We are also designing a lot of our own assets from this side of the pond, so that we are able to make strategic pieces of content that make sense for our market," Pfeiffer added, saying, "We are working really closely with our producers in Japan to construct these materials for the West and they are open more then ever to hearing our thoughts and ideas for assets." Translated: Capcom USA hopes it won't be blindsided again, and has gotten assurances from the home office that it'll be listened to the next time it says, "Uh, no, that ain't gonna fly anywhere." Listened to, yes, but heard? Only the lack of another "RE5 controversy" can serve as proof.

  • Resident Evil 5's Move patch available September 19

Capcom clarified today at Gamescom that the Resident Evil 5 patch that introduces Move functionality will be available on September 19 (the same day Move launches). As previously mentioned, the automatically downloaded patch will only be available for the Gold Edition of the game. If you live in Italy or Spain you didn't get a "gold edition," but Capcom is releasing Resident Evil 5: Move Edition in those countries. A Capcom representative also let us know that folks playing together will be able to play co-op online or offline with any supported controller configurations (a Move and Navigation Controller pair can play alongside a DualShock 3, for instance). The Move controls (and all the other control options) will be available in the main story, Mercenaries and bonus episodes.

If you're anything like us, you've been waiting diligently for the motion controller-enabled version of 2009's Resident Evil 5, hoping for a chance to battle zombies (and explore the additional content) using Sony's PlayStation Move. A recent posting on the PlayStation Blog by Sony's Sid Shuman indicates that only folks who own the Gold Edition of RE5 will be receiving the Move-enabling patch "close to the launch of the PlayStation Move." "This will only work with RE5 copies labeled 'Gold Edition' -- the original version of RE5 won't be receiving the patch, for technical reasons," Shuman says, additionally noting that the patch itself will become available on PSN "close to the launch of the PlayStation Move." Not into patches? Too bad! No, no, just joshin' -- apparently all retail versions of RE5's Gold Edition will come with the patch on-disc after Move's official release. Also, you should probably get in on the whole "internet" thing.

  • PlayStation Move bundled with Resident Evil 5 in Japan

Given all the release announcements, new games and other such hullabaloo that's recently surrounded the PlayStation Move, we wouldn't be surprised if you've forgotten about one of the earliest titles known to support the ice cream cone-shaped peripheral: Resident Evil 5: Alternative Edition. Perhaps this will jog your memory: Sony Japan recently announced that the game will be bundled with the Move controller and PlayStation Eye, a package which will sell for 7,980 yen (about $90). Sadly, zero gamers will be purchasing this particular bundle, as Sony Japan also announced the "PlayStation Move BIG 3 GUN SHOOTING Perfect Pack," a commanding package which includes Time Crisis: Razing Storm, Dead Storm Pirates and Time Crisis 4: Arcade Version. Of course, this bundle costs 11,980 yen (about $136) and features three games that, even when combined, aren't as good as RE5 -- but still! It's the BIG 3 GUN SHOOTING Perfect Pack. How are we supposed to say no to that?
