Sony Japan's just outed three newly styled S Series Walkmans for the Disney fanatic. That's right, Mickey & Minnie Mouse can now be found gracing the back of your PMP -- if that's what you're into, of course. The S640 and S740 models can be chosen in their wide variety of hues, then emblazoned with one of the three designs featuring Mickey, Minnie, or the pair together. Unfortunately for us, the engraving of Disney characters on Walkmans remains an underground, unofficial pastime: the Disney S Series Walkmans are available only in Japan at this time.

Maybe it's a byproduct of the phosphorescent Disney babysitter that raised us, but it's near impossible to look at Sony's Walkman players and not think whimsically of Mickey Mouse. An unfortunate emotional response to otherwise very serious competitors for your portable audio dollar. Joining the S-series are the new S640 and S740 Walkmen officially unveiled today in Japan. Both feature 2-inch LCDs, 720x480 TV-out, and the same quality MDR-EX300SL earbuds shipping with the better-speced A840. The S740 (8GB/16GB/32GB) brings noise cancellation while the S640 (8GB/16GB) saddles your brain with ambient noise filtration. Shipping later this month in prices ranging from ¥16,000 (about $155) to ¥25,000 (about $277). The promotional video after the break featuring an overly expressive teenager is, however, free.[Via Sony Insider]

Man, the Nikon Coolpix S1000pj has gone from crazy rumor to seemingly-real to whoa-here's-the-press-release in record time -- the compact cam with the integrated projector was just officially announced, along with the three other cams we saw leaked earlier today. Leaked specs for the S1000pj were dead-on: a 12.1 megapixel sensor with ISO 6400 sensitivity mounted behind a 5x wide-angle zoom lens with five-way VR stabilization, and that LED-powered projector that'll put up a 40-inch image for slideshows complete with music, effects and transitions. We're a little less excited about the $430 list price this thing will carry when it hits in September, but on the whole it's a pretty terrific idea and we're completely intrigued -- looks like we'll be saving our pennies this month. Pictures of everything in the gallery, deets on the other cams and a video of the S1000pj after the break.

Nikon's Coolpix S1000pj project-o-camera may be the big rumor du jour, but the company's also got plenty of other cameras slipping through the cracks these days, like this trio of new compact shooters. Leading off the lot is the 12.2-megapixel Coolpix S640 (pictured above), which is said to pack a 5x, 28mm equivalent wide-angle lens, a 2.7-inch display, an "ultra-fast autofocus system," a start-up time of just 0.7 seconds, built-in quick retouch features, and your choice of three different colors for $499. Joining it are the 12-megapixel Coolpix S570, which replaces the 10-megepixel S560 and will set you back $349, and the all new 12.1-megapixel Coolpix S70 (check it out after the break), which runs a hefty $599 and includes 3.5-inch OLED touchscreen, a 5x optical zoom, sensitivity setting up to ISO 6400, and your choice of red, black, or champagne colors. No word on a release date for any of them just yet, but it sure seems like they're about to burst out of the gate.

  • Hands-on with the Telus HTC S640, aka HTC Iris

Telus was kind enough to zip over another handset for our viewing enjoyment, the pretty fab -- though somewhat homely -- HTC S640. This little rubber-finished handset packs EV-DO, Windows Mobile 6 standard, 2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, WiFi, and a pretty well planned QWERTY effort for mobile messaging speed demons. So what do we think in a few lines or less? We like the handset's form factor, the finish -- which is really nice as your hands do stick quite well to the material -- and we love the two rocker style "soft keys," they're hands down the best thing about the device's design. Sure, the keypad is a wee bit cramped, but without growing the S640's chin in a big way (Canadians, think Brian Mulroney), we think they've done well with the layout. The S640 can be grabbed right now for about $150 on a 3 year contract. Read on for a pile of pics -- including a few nice comparisons with Telus' HTC Touch.%Gallery-9924%
