Are you a browser fiend? The sort of person who loves Safari, yet can't quite live with some of its peculiarities? If you hadn't guessed, I certainly am one of those people. I love the speed and simplicity of Safari, but it never worked as well as (say) Camino, particularly when it came to persuading links from the likes of Gmail to open in the same window. No number of SIMBL hacks (yes, hacks) seemed to persuade Safari to open links in the existing window - driving me away from Safari, and instead swear by Camino. But that's about to change, as Apple has added a hidden preference to Safari 3.1 that allows you to tell Safari to stick to one window. Even in Gmail. Tipster Dennis Stevense, explains in a blog post that through a simple Terminal command, true one-window mode is finally, finally, here for Safari. All you need to enter is the command below into Terminal, hit enter, and you're sorted. defaults write com.apple.Safari TargetedClicksCreateTabs -bool true Thanks Dennis! Update: If you want to reverse the change, it's a simple matter of entering the following into Terminal: defaults write com.apple.Safari TargetedClicksCreateTabs -bool false

Whether you make a living from buying and selling on eBay or you merely sell off your basement junk when it gets too crowded down there, iSale is a fantastic eBay client that merges the wonders of Mac OS X with the world's leading online marketplace. Offering beautiful tempaltes, WYSIWYG auction composing, integration with iCal, Address Book and iSight, a Dashboard widget for monitoring auctions, Google Maps and worlds more, iSale has everything you need to get your eBay on. Like so many other web-integrated Mac OS X apps, however, iSale was hit with compatibility issues if users installed the Safari 3 beta. Fortunately, a couple of recent updates have fixed those issues and added over 30 new templates to bring the grand total to more than 200 different auction templates, organized by category. With a wide variety of template styles, imagery and layouts, you'll be hard pressed to not find something that'll fit just about anything you post for auction. This most recent v4.2 of iSale is a free upgrade for registered 4.x users, and a demo is available. A single user license costs $39.95, while family packs start at $49.95 and go up from there.

  • TUAW Tip: Safari Popup Blocker

Ron Popeil, the patron saint of gadget vendors, has a saying: "Set it and forget it." And, as with so many of Saint Ron's utterances, we sometimes miss how deep and meaningful these lessons are in our daily lives. Take Safari 3 for example. After switching to the new beta, I suddenly started seeing pop-up ads. Lots and lots of those annoying little windows. And this was, of course, because I had so long ago set my Safari pop-up blocker and then forgotten about it. Now that I had upgraded, it was time for another "set it and forget it" moment. I opened my Safari menu and sure enough, "Block Pop-Up Windows" was unchecked. So I selected it and my pop-ups went away. Hopefully this post will help some of you to do the same.

A big thank you to everyone who has sent in tips and comments about their experiences both good and bad with the new Safari 3 beta. I'm surprised by what an amazingly mixed bag this new beta seems to be. It has tons of new great features as well as the cursed instability issues, security concerns, and problems with de-installation. In this post, I'm going to round up some of the cooler features reported by readers. I'll leave the security worries and the installation issues aside for the moment.

TUAW reader Shon Dempsey decided to fire up Parallels and compare the Safari 3 beta running on OS X and Windows side by side. Tough to tell which is which, huh (here's a hint, look at the top of the browser window). Check out Shon's blog for the full res pic (for those of you who don't want to sully your Mac with Windows).

Thanks to Erica and Laurie for pointing out that if you're having a bit of a time with your shiny new Safari 3 Beta for Mac goodness, there's a quick way back to the safe harbor of Safari 2: run the uninstaller thoughtfully included in the disk image. Well played, Apple.User reports of finicky Safari 3 beta experiences on the Mac (as opposed to the Windows reports we're collecting here) are showing up on Macintouch now.
