Google Calendar's Working Hours feature has been around for a while, letting you inform others when you'll be around for meetings and when you're unavailable. Previously, you'll have had to activate it through the app's settings, but now it'll be enabled by default, displaying an estimate of your work day availability based on previous appointments (which you can tweak if they're not quite right).

The Sacramento Kings are still as obsessed with technology as ever, although their latest move could be particularly helpful in the long run. The basketball team has teamed up with Zipwhip to become the first pro sports outfit to use next-gen RCS texting. The richer format lets the Kings send tickets, schedules and other rich info without making you check your email or use a specialized app -- you can just use the same texting app you would to message your friends.

As helpful as online calendars can be, it's hard to give up the satisfying feel of jotting down appointments in an old-school planner. Wouldn't it be nice if you could use a pen and paper while still having all the benefits of the internet era? Moleskine sure thinks so. The company is expanding its connected writing sets with the Smart Planner, which syncs your hand-written schedule entries with Google Calendar and services that tie into it, such as Apple's iCloud and Microsoft Outlook. It combines a Neo Smartpen with sensor-laden paper to send your meetings to the appropriate sections of the calendar -- so long as you scribble the time and subject, you can check it later on your phone or PC.

Microsoft is trying to turn Cortana into the digital assistant of your dreams with a new AI bot called Calendar.help. The beta service requires an invitation, but once signed up, you link it to your Outlook, Google or Office 365 calendar apps. Then, when it's time to schedule a meeting, send an email to attendees and Cc: Cortana. The message can include natural language like "sometime next week" or "make this a Skype meeting." From there, it'll look at your calendar and contact other attendees by itself to find the best time for everyone.

In a trick borrowed from the desktop app, the iOS version of Outlook has a new scheduling assistant that makes it fairly easy to book a meeting. All you need to do is create an event and add coworkers in the "people" field, then choose the date picker.

At March's Build developer conference, Microsoft gave the full rundown on a number of Office extensions for Mac. Part of that announcement was a Starbucks add-in that allows you to send gift cards and book meetings inside Outlook. Well, that extension, er "add-in," is ready for prime time. This means that you can easily send a "thank you" cup of coffee or schedule a meeting at your nearby Starbucks location while you're looking at a related email. And if you need to place an order, the add-in will boot you out to the coffee company's mobile app to input all the details for your Grand Soy Latte or Iced Americano.

Uber is letting business travellers book rides in advance

    by

Uber is reportedly allowing a small group of business travelers to schedule rides up to 30 days in advance of when they take 'em. Recode is reporting that the option is being rolled out in Seattle, with San Francisco likely next to get the feature. Rather than actually pre-booking a ride, it's simply a way of scheduling the app to call for a pickup at a specific time and location. Naturally, that means you can't avoid surge pricing, so the utility for such a feature is limited to frequent fliers who want one less thing to worry about when they leave the airport.

First, there's now an option for scheduling calls in the mobile app. Select the contact you want to schedule a call with and select the appropriate item from the drop-down menu. This will allow you to block off time in Outlook or your calendar app of choice.

Broadcast TV may be tied to a rigid schedule of weekly releases, but services like Netflix have shown that the internet has no such restriction. It's a fact that the creators of Serial are now taking advantage of after announcing that new episodes of season two will now be aired on a fortnightly, not weekly basis. Rather than out of a capricious desire to keep you in suspense, the move is due to the team suddenly being given access to new material. In a report by the New York Times, the show's executive producer reveals that the first few episodes have "opened up more avenues of reporting."

If you're as big a fan of the Sunrise calendar app as the folks at Microsoft, scheduling meetings just got a lot easier. There's a new feature called Meet that adds a tab to your device's keyboard offering quick and easy access to your availability. Not only can you immediately see what time slots you have free without navigating elsewhere, but you can select a handful of options to send to your colleagues, friends and family. Once they decide what works best, Sunrise automatically schedules the event for you. And it even works for folks who aren't using the app. All of that means that you'll save a significant amount of time inputting dates and swiping through multiple apps. Itchin' to give it a go? Both the Android and iOS versions have been updated with the new tool, so you can start thinking about what you'll do with all of that extra time.

  • The BBC makes every Radio Times listing ever printed available online

For over 85 years, the BBC published a weekly television and radio programme listings magazine called The Radio Times. The rise of the internet and smartphone use means it's nowhere near as popular as it once was, but the Beeb is ensuring it will continue to live on, by digitising 4,469 past editions and making them available to browse online. BBC Genome allows users to plug in a programme date or Radio Times edition from between 1923 and 2009, which reveals a Wiki-like rundown of the BBC's TV and radio schedules on a particular day. The first ever broadcast of Blue Peter is there, as is the BBC's coverage of the Royal Wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana. It lists the presenters, contributors and even how much a related BBC video or DVD would have cost back in the day. If you're interested to see how the BBC's scheduling has changed over time or what "the official organ of the B.B.C" listed on the day you were born, hit the source link below.

If you're one of the few that managed to pick up tickets to PAX East 2014 in the narrow window they were available, then your schedule of events is now available to view. The Joystiq staff will be at PAX East this year in full force, and they're even headlining the event's list of fascinating panels. If you're looking to maximize your odds at high-fiving folks like Joystiq's Managing Editor Susan Arendt, News Content Director Alexander Sliwinski or Reviews Content Director Richard Mitchell, you'll want to attend panels such as "Was I Wrong? Revisiting Controversial Reviews," "We didn't start the DLC fire, but we fed the monster. Now what?" and "Keep Your Opinion to Yourself: The Myth of the 'Objective' Game Review." We promise that not every panel will take multiple tweets to tell your friends about. When you're not attending every one of Joystiq's panels, the PAX East Indie Showcase appears to be a good destination for PAX-goers, as six mobile indie games will be on display this year. PAX East 2014 will be held in Boston on April 11 through April 13. [Image: PAX East]
