TUAW's iPhone app: it's alive

If you love TUAW, iPhones, and apps (and let's be honest... you do), then today should be filled with wonderment and excitement. Why you ask? Because our homeboys and girls over at The Unofficial Apple Weblog have released their very own iPhone app -- and it's pretty darn slick. If you know what's good for you, you'll get to downloading it right now. It's what Steve Jobs would want you to do.

iPhone v1.1.1 exploits starting to surface

As if anyone expected it to stay locked down forever, the layers of security surrounding v1.1.1 of the iPhone firmware are being peeled away. TUAW's Erica Sadun managed to get read / write access to the phone's directories during her liveblogging session, and the hackint0sh forums are abuzz about a new hacking method that uses buffer overflow via "carefully crafted" TIFFs that crash Mobile Safari. Neither of the new hacks approach the relative ease of use that we'd seen pre-v1.1.1, but it's still early days yet. Apple, throw us a bone here, will ya?

[Thanks, Julian]

ModBook photo gallery, look but don't touch ... wait, you can touch

We're guessing the singular product shot of Axiotron's ModBook wasn't enough to sate your insatiable appetite for all things Apple and all things tablet. Our friends at The Unofficial Apple Weblog were on hand for the product's official unveiling at MacWorld today and they've got the photo gallery to prove it. They've even got a box shot so you can imagine getting your own in the mail.

Apple acknowledges MacBook random shutdown problem

Oh, Apple, must you be so coy? For those of you who haven't been keeping score at home, since their debut, some folks have reported that their MacBooks are turning off completely out of the blue, which is, erm, bad. Over at TUAW, they've been chronicling this problem for the last few weeks and have posted a possible explanation to this problem's cause, and an unofficial test to see if your MacBook might be susceptible. Today, TUAW informs us of Apple's first official comment on the issue: "If your MacBook is shutting down intermittently, please contact AppleCare for service." Thanks, Apple -- that's about as helpful as telling us to remove our hand from an exploding PowerBook battery.
