Team Xecuter's Hard Drive Xtender replaces PS3 HDD with your own
Rest assured, those looking for a clean solution to add hard drive space to their PlayStation 3 had mixed emotions when pondering the Hyperdrive. Thankfully, Team Xecuter has unveiled a much sleeker (and flexible) alternative with the Hard Drive Xtender; the device actually replaces the internal PS3 hard drive and provides a plug to run externally, where you can then attach your favorite SATA or IDE drive (with optional adapter). Obviously, the biggest boon in this setup is the money you'll save from not having to spend a small fortune on a dense 2.5-inch SATA drive, and considering that the Hyperdrive can reportedly be used in conjunction, the limits of PS3 capacity are now slightly closer to endless. Team Xecuter posts Blaster360 firmware flasher install guide
In a shot across Microsoft's bow, Team Xecuter has released a how-to for the installation of its yet to be released Blaster360 firmware flasher. There's a range of different motivations behind wanting to flash your Xbox 360, the most obvious being the ability to update your Xbox 360's firmware to a newer and improved version. Of course, whether or not that "newer and improved" firmware is officially sanctioned by Microsoft is another matter entirely. If the homebrew community's relationship with Sony regarding the PSP's firmware is anything to go by, it would probably be safe to assume that Microsoft doesn't even want its users to switch between official firmware versions, let alone modded ones that trick the 360 into playing "backed up" games. In the past the company has never stepped up and taken a public stand against any of these third party solutions; a position that could change due to the main innovation of the Blaster360. As the install guide shows, a user only needs to open their Xbox 360 once in order to change the firmware. Once the chip is all plugged in it's possible to change firmware from outside the box, making it very easy to switch modded machines back to their factory state. That removes an easily recognizable sign that a console is modded, and puts the ball very firmly into Microsoft's court.[Via Xbox-Scene]
Team Xecuter's Hyperdrive lets you hook up HDs to your PS3
Team Xecuter -- known internally within Sony and Microsoft as public enemy #1 -- has created a peripheral which enables users to connect 3.5-inch SATA hard drives to their PS3. The peripheral, which has been codenamed the "Hyperdrive," lets users hook up external drives with capacities of up to 750GB, and thanks to the included USB 2.0 support, users will be able to dump data to and from the unit using their PC. On the surface, these kinds of activities are relatively innocent -- even if they will inevitably be the motivation behind the next firmware patch -- but Team Xecuter also claims to be close to discovering a way of storing and booting entire games from the PS3's hard drive. Personally we can't think of anything more convenient than storing our game collection on one massive SATA drive, but as many will no doubt agree, this kind of activity is a legal gray area. Proponents will say "it's only for backing up my games" and opponents will say "this enables piracy," but we'll let you decide which side to take. As always, we ain't going there.[Via Maxconsole]
