  • Japanese Nintendo downloads: Kappa Michi, Final Fight 3, more

Another ridiculous overload of content today on the Japanese Wii and DSi Shops. Not so much in WiiWare, whose only release this week is The Incredible (and incredibly avoidable) Maze, but Virtual Console and DSiWare are absolutely stuffed with games! Weirdly, there are two map-based puzzle games on DSiWare. One, Map Map! is a series of puzzle, and the other, Sekai Tanken Kokki World Map, is a quiz game. Also available: a cute puzzle game from the G.G. Series, in which you drop blocks to build a path for a character, a mini version of Paint by DS, more Jake Hunter, and a really cute game from Mother 3 developer Brownie Brown about leading a kappa along paths of coins. Chokkan! Balance Labyrinth (WiiWare, 1 player, 500 Wii Points) Final Fight Tough (Super Famicom, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points) Yie Ar Kung Fu 2 (MSX, 800 Wii Points) Namco Quester (Arcade, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points) Valkyrie no Densetsu (Arcade, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points) Metal Gear (MSX, 1 player, 800 Wii Points) G.G. Series: Black x Block (DSiWare, 1 player, 200 DSi Points) Sekai Tanken Kokki World Map (DSiWare, 1 player, 200 DSi Points) Map Map! By Gotouchi Kentei DS (DSiWare, 1 player, 200 DSi Points) Artist ni Narou! Minna no Nurikai (DSiWare, 1 player, 500 DSi Points) UNO (DSiWare, 1-4 players, 500 DSi Points) Kappa Michi (DSiWare, 1 player, 500 DSi Points) Tantei Saburo Jinguuji: Chained Curse & Mystery Case (DSiWare, 1 player, 500 DSi Points)

  • European Nintendo downloads: Pokemon Rumble, Shootanto, demos

The WiiWare demo service arrives in Europe today, though a bit light on content compared to other regions. On the upside, both of the demos offered are for games that cost 1,500 Wii Points, which means you could save a pretty large chunk of change if you discover (somehow) that you don't like World of Goo. In terms of stuff you pay for, Shootanto is going to be totally overshadowed by Pokemon Rumble. DSiWare has a decent selection of games, including something that looks kind of like Defend Your Castle, a few card games, and myNotebook. Pokemon Rumble (WiiWare, 1-4 players, 1,500 Wii Points) Shootanto: Evolutionary Mayhem (WiiWare, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points) Army Defender (DSiWare, 1 player, 200 DSi Points) A Little Bit of ... All-Time Classics: Strategy Games (DSiWare, 1 player, 500 DSi Points) myNotebook: Blue (DSiWare, 1 player, 200 DSi Points) Uno (DSiWare, 1-6 players, 500 DSi Points) Demos: Pokemon Rumble, World of Goo (free)

Just like last week, the original version of a game remade on DS has been released on Virtual Console in Japan: last week it was Kirby Super Star, and this week it's Fire Emblem. We're guessing this is a coincidence, otherwise it's a really weird initiative. Also like last week, Namco Bandai releases a pair of arcade games in the same series, this time the more recognizable Dig Dug. And WiiWare returns! ... With Uno.On DS, there's another chunk of The Tower DS, more Japanese city maps, and some English training. Fire Emblem: Dragon of Darkness and Sword of Light (Famicom, 1 player, 500 Wii Points) Dig Dug (Arcade, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points) Dig Dug II (Arcade, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points) Uno (WiiWare, 1-6 players, 800 Wii Points) The Tower DS: Challenge in front of the suburban train station! Gigantic Shopping Center (DSiWare, 1 player, 500 DSi Points) Pocket Rurubu: Kamakura and Pocket Rurubu: Osaka (DSiWare, 1 player, 800 DSi Points each) High School English Foundation 400 Word Master (DSiWare, 1 player, 800 DSi Points)

You'll find the full list of this week's releases for the European PlayStation Network after the jump. Honestly, though, if you've chosen to put down that copy of Uncharted 2 in order to check out Mushroom Wars or Uno, we don't really think we can associate with you any longer. Choose your platform to view the corresponding release list: (Note: Continue past the break to view both release lists.)

Amazon is running an Xbox Live promotion that guarantees awesome multiplayer fun in one of three games, unless you don't have any friends, or, uh, don't like these games. Okay, maybe it encourages awesome multiplayer fun. Today, if you purchase Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo, Street Fighter II' Hyper Fighting, or Uno from Amazon, you'll receive a code for another download of the same game, to give to a second player. You haven't lived until you've unlocked the secret Dan character in Puzzle Fighter and experienced the kind of defeat that comes from only being able to drop red blocks on your opponent's screen. It's a thrilling way to ... lose spectacularly.[Via Capcom Unity]

Nintendo has cracked open the vault of upcoming titles due out later this year, and there's quite a few new titles mentioned for DSiWare. A few we already knew about (Gameloft's Uno and Hudson's Sudoku games were expected), but Prehistorik Man, published by Interplay, is an old SNES game (so Virtual Console we guess?), and there's a working title for a DSiWare game called Six in One Translator. Could you be translating between six different languages on your DSi sometime later this year? There are also quite a few "Domo" games planned -- we're guessing these are games that have to do with the popular Japanese Domo character, thoughThe full list of publishers, games, and expected release dates is after the break.

This week on XBLA in Brief, we look at UNO RUSH, a speedy new take on the classic card game. Players have to adjust their hands quickly and play as many cards as possible on every turn. Microsoft has announced that the next game to be released as part of the Days of Arcade promotion will be none other than UNO RUSH. A fast-paced version of UNO, the game requires gamers to assemble their hands ahead of time, as everyone's hand is played automatically. The game features online play for up to four players and includes Avatar support. The game will release this Wednesday for 800. %Gallery-27823%

  • Days of Arcade promotion coming to XBLA March 18; Lode Runner, six other titles coming soon

Xbox Live figurehead Major Nelson recently updated his blog with the titillating announcement of a six-week long promotion titled the "Days of Arcade." Similar to last year's "Summer of Arcade" event, the promotion will kick off March 18 with the release of Hasbro Family Game Night, with the following five weeks bringing a number of highly anticipated titles to the Marketplace, including The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai, Flock, Outrun Online Arcade, Puzzle Quest: Galactrix, UNO Rush and Tozai Games' remake of Lode Runner. Aside from Game Night, we won't know which games are coming which weeks until Major Nelson announces them on the Mondays preceeding their Wednesday releases. However, as the keen-eyed mathmaticians among you have already noticed, with seven titles dropping in six weeks, one XBLA Wednesday will bring us a double dose of downloadable distractions. We've already canceled our Spring Break excursion to Cabo San Lucas in a fit of breathless anticipation.

  • DS Daily: Uno or U-nooooo?

    by

    01.12.2009

Gameloft has acquired the rights to the Uno card game for, well, pretty much everything, but most importantly DSiWare. Chances are, the DS version will be similar to the iPhone release, which is apparently pretty good, but lacks the theme decks and online infrastructure (i.e. Xbox Live friends lists and such) of the Xbox 360 game.Uno decks themselves are a classic, and the Xbox version has done very well, but will the success transfer to other platforms? Will people be as interested in playing online on the DSi as they are on Xbox Live, or does the online service make the game? Could it be a killer app for DSiWare?

Gameloft has revealed the first part of their DSiWare strategy -- along with a new move in their mobile, PSP, PS3, and WiiWare strategies. Through a partnership with Mattel, they'll release a version of the card game Uno on all those platforms we just said. Is this the first official announcement of any specific DSiWare game for release outside Japan? We think so!Gameloft's president, Michel Guillemot said that "This agreement is the first step towards a long and successful relationship between Mattel, one of the world's premier toy companies and Gameloft, the global leader in video game development," which means we can expect more Mattel properties to be released on pretty much every platform. Uno is a big deal on the Xbox 360, becoming so successful that other companies release theme packs for the XBLA game. Will DSi players care as well?

Why not, right? That's what Gameloft is saying, as they're set to bring the popular Mattel card game to WiiWare. Sadly, we've got no date to go on as of right now, but it can't take too long to pump this out now, can it? Also, the press release mentions that this is merely the first collaboration between Mattel and Gameloft, so there's a chance we could see other Mattel licenses make their way to Wii. A WiiWare version of KerPlunk? That's what we're talking about![Via Joystiq]

The popular card game UNO is getting PS3 and PSP adaptations, courtesy of GameLoft. The two versions will be available on the PlayStation Store. Both versions will be available some time this year. Michel Guillemot, president of Gameloft, said: "UNO is one of the most recognized card games in the world and we are excited to extend it beyond mobile and onto a whole host of console executions."[Thanks, David B.!]

UNO isn't just a mega-successful game for XBLA anymore, as Gameloft plans to publish the digital incarnation of the card game for any mobile, console and handheld device it can. The publisher announced that beyond the iPhone and iPod versions available now, it expects to bring the game to mobile, PS3, PSP, WiiWare and DSi Ware.Furthermore, Gameloft's president states this is a "first step" toward a "successful relationship" between the publisher and Mattel. We'll take that to mean we can expect more Mattel-owned games to be published by Gameloft in the future. You know, unless Gameloft goes for third base on the second date. We hear Mattel's a prude like that.

  • First Look: UNO for iPhone

If you've ever played UNO before, then you know how addicting it can be. You can now enjoy that same UNO [iTunes link] experience on your iPhone anywhere, which makes it much more addicting. Gameloft, creators of many other iPhone and iPod games, has really outdone itself on this game for the iPhone. UNO gives you many different ways to play. When you press Quick Play, you are able to choose your difficulty level, and instantly begin playing against a computer player. Single player allows you to enter either Tournament mode, or Custom mode. In custom mode, you can choose the difficulty, game type, scoring type, penalties, draw type, force play, UNO 7-0, and jump in. One of my most favorite parts of this game is the multiplayer abilities. There are three options: over Wi-Fi, on one device, or online. With Wi-Fi multiplayer, you can play someone with another iPhone on the same Wi-Fi access point -- you can either create or join an existing room. With one device multiplayer, you can have up to 4 people play on the same iPhone ... this is my least favored way to play UNO because others might catch a glimse of your cards (although cards are not shown until the specified player touches the screen). With online multiplayer, you can create and join a room for others around the world to play along with you.I wish I could rotate the screen and use online multiplayer over EDGE or 3G. With that being said, UNO is an awesome application for on-the-go playing, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes to play card games. You can purchase UNO for iPhone/iPod touch from the iTunes App Store for $7.99. %Gallery-38725%

  • NXE how-to: Avatars in XBLA games

Now that your NXE Avatar is dressed and ready for ... Hey, yeah! Just what is an Avatar for? Well, if you're not ready to drop 800 on A Kingdom for Keflings, we're afraid your options are seriously limited. What you can play with are several older Xbox Live Arcade games, which should be updated with limited Avatar support. Specifically, Uno, Bomberman Live, Hardwood Hearts, and Hardwood Spades -- disc-based Scene It? Box Office Smash is also due to receive an update enabling Avatar support today. The Uno update will install itself just as any other XBLA title update has in the past (and we can confirm this), but the other three games require additional attention. Gamerscore Blog has laid out the process in a simple 1-2-3 and 4-step guide. We attempted to update Bomberman Live earlier today, however, and were not prompted for the initial update. We can only assume that the update's absence is linked to the current condition of Xbox Live Marketplace (read: wonky). We got hit with the "8000ffff" error -- that's Xbox's way of saying: Try again later. Curious about the New Xbox Experience? Check out our ridiculously informative nine-video feature, covering everything from Avatar creation, Netflix integration, and the 8-player party system to installing games to the hard drive, the new Marketplace, the Blade-like "Guide" interface, and more!

  • NXE Avatars coming to (some) older XBLA titles

    10.31.2008

In its latest video exposé on the New Xbox Experience, the Gamerscore Blog has teamed with Major Nelson and a few project insiders to show off how Avatars will work in several older XBLA titles. Specifically, Uno, Bomberman Blast, Hardwood Hearts, and Hardwood Spades will all incorporate the virtual "yous" in various ways. In the case of these games, player Avatars will be visible on-screen – you can't actually play as your Avatar in Bomberman, sadly. The video does show that players will be able to be ... themselves in the upcoming Ninjabee town building game, A Kingdom for Keflings. (This is likely the new title the Gamerscore crew refer to in their blog update.) A title update for Scene It? Box Office Smash will roll out on Nov. 19 to enable in-game player Avatars (looks like the game didn't ship ready for NXE after all.) Check out the full video below the break.

Click for high-resolution image. If the Xbox Live Experience trailer is to be believed, Uno Rush already has a price-point nailed and downloadable content in the works. While showing off the new dashboard update in quick marketing video during the Microsoft Press Conference the Uno Rush menu is displayed and reveals an asking price of 400MS points for the game and 800MS points for an something called an Uno Rush Theme Pack. 800MS points for an Uno Rush Theme Pack? We don't know what could possibly be included for that price but if we had to wager, Geddy Lee is going to hand deliver the pack to each person on a disc himself. Now that's value! Of course, these prices haven't been confirmed as of yet. So, stay tuned. [Thanks, andyg8180]

Uno Rush has been confirmed for release on Xbox Live later this year. No details on what the game is yet, but we hear that you'll be able to win actual, real-life prizes while playing it, including possibly Xbox accessories, Microsoft Points, or even other games. We'll keep an eye on anything else we can find out about it -- if old school Uno isn't giving you a Wild Card Draw Four lately, keep an eye out for Rush.
