You can always count on Canon for some counter-intuitive model numbering, and their new PowerShot A710 IS (7.1 megapixel, pictured), A630 (8 megapixel) and A640 (10 megapixel) cameras seem privy to just such madness. All three consumer shooters feature 2.5-inch LCDs, but are otherwise divergent on features. While the A640 and 630 win out in the megapixel game, the A710 bests the others with 6x zoom (compared to 4x in its compatriots) and Canon's Image Stabilizer Technology -- the first in an A-Series model. All three cameras can manage SDHC memory cards and 30 fps VGA shooting, but it doesn't get much more exciting from there. As for price, the A710 and A640 are both hitting the $400 mark, while the A630 sneaks in for $300. We suppose all three cameras should be out this September along with the millions of other cameras being announced today. The A640 isn't new to us, nor is the fact that it's coming to Sprint, but we thought we'd pay this flip another visit now that it's gone all official on us. We've heard rumors that it packs Bluetooth 2.0, but otherwise the feature list is pretty uneventful, with a VGA camera and Ready Link support in the package. If the A640 speaks to you in ways that other Samsung flips simply haven't, it's available for $49.99 on contract from your friendly Sprint outlet.

  • We've seen Sprint's future, and it's... blurry

Sprint users, brace yourselves -- we've just been hit with a gaggle of hot (if difficult to read) rumors about Samsung devices due on your carrier. First up is the SPH-A420, a low end clamshell lacking an external display that should be replacing the A560. The A640 is a little higher -- emphasis on "a little" -- in the food chain, adding Bluetooth, PTT, and a VGA camera. The A980, aka "Combo," is new to us -- it features EV-DO and a 1.3 megapixel shooter, but more interestingly, it'll supposedly be Sprint's first CDMA / WiFi dual-mode traditional handset. We're also seeing pictures of an A720, a squared-off flip with dual displays. The "MEGA3," which we're guessing is a code name, is identified in the PowerPoint stack as a "premium camera" of, you guessed it, 3 megapixels. On the Windows Mobile front, the i830 is on its way, finally chock full o' WM5 goodness. Oh, and that rumored A900P with the MicroSD slot Samsung forgot to include on the A900? Apparently, that's a negative; the A900P will end up being a software upgrade alone.
