We've known for a while now that Star Wars: The Old Republic is planning to offer players two different specializations for each class, but up until now we've only heard of a couple of them. Today at Gamescom, however, BioWare unloaded the names and loose descriptions of ten advanced classes. The best part? No Bothans died for this information. Darth Hater reports that imperial agent characters will have the choice between specializing as snipers (long-range DPS) or operatives (who use stealth and short-range weapons to get up close and personal). If a bounty hunter is more to your liking, then the choice between a powertech and a mercenary should get your imagination racing. Over on the Republic side, troopers will sign up for either commando or vanguard training. Commandos are the tanking line, although we don't know much about vanguards yet. SWTOR-Station spied a Zabrak trooper at the BioWare booth, indicating another possible race for the class. Force-users are also in store for powerful upgrades. The villainous Sith inquisitors choose their path between a more Force-happy sorcerer or the twin lightsaber-using assassin. Their counterpart, the Jedi consular, has a similar decision to make: that of a shadow, who can use double-bladed lightsabers, or a wizard, who uses a single lightsaber but can heal. Are Star Wars fans ready for wizards and sorcerers in their MMO? Somehow, we think so.

Tweet var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/pc_games/BioWare_confirms_Jedi_Advanced_Classes_for_SWTOR'; For over a thousand generations, the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic. So says sage Obi-Wan Kenobi in A New Hope (of course he conveniently leaves out the fact that the Order also kidnaps babies for indoctrination, but hey no one's perfect!). Following on from the guardian of peace and justice motif, BioWare has released the first bits of information on Advanced Classes for Star Wars: The Old Republic's Jedi Knight characters, confirming rumors that have been circulating for the past week. Advanced Jedi Knights come in two flavors -- Guardians and Sentinels, with the former seemingly filling the traditional tank role and the latter using dual lightsabers to pump out the damage. Interestingly, the Sentinel Holonet description mentions "control and focus are the hallmarks" of the class. Could that be a nod to crowd control abilities as well? Be sure to check out the official SWTOR website for the updated Jedi Knight Holonet entry as well as a brief video showing the class in action, found just after the jump.

The official blog for Star Wars: The Old Republic was recently updated, adding more information about the advanced class system which was unveiled late last week. The branching specialization tree won't just allow you to unlock new abilities for your galactic hero -- it will also unlock armor and weapon proficiencies, as well as other "role-defining Abilities." We're guessing "Relentlessly Choking Out Unsuccessful Subordinates" shows up somewhere on one of the Sith Warrior's sets. Each specialty is broken down into two smaller skill trees, apparently leaving room for specialization inside each specialization. In addition, players will have access to a shared basic skill set, which they'll always have access to, regardless of which advanced path they traverse. Check out the game's blog for more info on how to personalize your spacefarer.

Eurogamer recently got an extensive look at BioWare's upcoming MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic, during which time it learned the game's seemingly narrow list of eight classes will be expanded upon by offering the player specialization options. Each class will have the option of two distinct "Advanced Classes," increasing the total number of archetypes available in the game by, like ... 300 percent? Maybe? The first two Advanced Classes revealed can be chosen by a high-level Sith Warrior, who can follow the path of the Marauder (a damage-dealing, Darth Maul-esque class) or the Juggernaut (a heavily armored, Darth Vader-esque class). Considering the former got totally cut in half by Ewan McGregor, we might appreciate the safety and security offered by the latter. [Via BigDownload]
