The world of comic books is often thought to just be the domain of dark gritty violence or melodramatic superhero fights, but there's another side of comics.: a fun-loving, thoughtful place we call Riverdale. It's the place where Archie lives. For decades Archie has made children and adults alike laugh with his screw-ups, adventures, and romances. Now thanks to Archie Comics new iOS app you can get your foot in the door with 100 free issues of classic Archie. For a limited time, the all-new app is featuring 100 free comics from Archie's incredibly deep back catalog. It's a golden opportunity to get a taste of the wide range of storytelling thats possible from the simple premise of a group of lifelong friends and their adventures. There's romance, comedy, time travel, horror (yes, After Life with Archie is a zombie book), and the classic stories from the supermarket digests you loved as a child. Best of all, you can read a few free issues of Life With Archie, the publisher's groundbreaking parallel reality series that follows how Archie's life would have been different if he'd married either Betty or Veronica. The title marks an almost Doonesbury-like acceptance of the importance of allowing comic characters to age, and it is incredible. Along with Life With Archie, the app also includes Kevin Keller #1 featuring the first gay character in the series history and his adventures as a teenager in the wholesome world of Riverdale High. Archie Comics' new app is optimized for Retina display iOS devices and features an easy-to-navigate menu. Best of all, with over 100 free books to try out even if you're not interested in the more progressive titles in the series, there are plenty of classic titles to choose from like Sabrina the Teenage Witch or the old Archie Digests you used to pick up at the grocery store. If you've never read an Archie book, you're missing out. The stories have never gotten as much credit as they deserve for their wholesome nature and honest to god wonderful humor. To some, these characters may seem too corny, but their basic archetypes are what allow them to so seamlessly fit into hundreds of different kinds of stories. You don't have to take our word for it. Go download yourself some free books and see for yourself while you still can.

Alongside an upcoming Sonic Boom cartoon series and games for both the Wii U and 3DS, Sega's favorite speedy blue rodent has also earned a new comic book from publisher Archie Comics. Appropriately titled "Sonic Boom," the comic will be written by Ian Flynn with art by Evan Stanley. Both Flynn and Stanley have worked extensively on Archie's long-running Sonic the Hedgehog comic series, which should make them qualified for this new book (assuming Sonic's new, lankier dimensions and superfluous yet jaunty scarf don't throw everything off). "I'm really excited to be writing the series since it's a very different Sonic than our other books, Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic Universe," Flynn told IGN. "It's a more casual read with a focus on comedy and adventure than an on-going action-adventure drama." According to IGN, the first issue of Sonic Boom will debut this October. Following in the grand promotional tradition of the 90s comic bubble, it will be released with four unique variant covers which can be aligned to form the image seen above. [Image: Archie Comics]

Sonic's ever-expanding circle of friends is about to get even bigger, as a teaser image reveals plans to have Sonic meet Mega Man ... at least, in the world of comics.USA Today comics reporter Brian Truitt tweeted the above teaser image, which he received from Archie Comics. In addition to its slate of digest-sized books about indecisive time-lost teens, Archie has published Sonic the Hedgehog comics since 1993 (allowing plenty of time to build a unique and insane Sonic universe), and it began publishing Mega Man comics last year.Having this historic meeting take place in the world of comic books rather than video games doesn't make it any less bizarre, and we can't wait to see what happens. Will Mega Man destroy Sonic and steal his speed?Update: According to USA Today, the crossover will take place in twelve installments across Archie's Sonic the Hedgehog, Mega Man, and Sonic Universe series.

Few beloved characters from our childhood have fallen quite as hard as Sonic the Hedgehog. After numerous franchise reboots that included an inappropriate romp with a Princess and a Werehog scare, Sonic looks to recapture an audience ... in comic book form! From the pages of Archie Comics comes Sonic Universe -- the monthly series, on its soon-to-ship second issue. Sonic Universe trails Shadow the Hedgehog and Metal Sonic taking their rivalry to a whole new dimension. Fans of the franchise will enjoy settle callbacks to simpler, and better, Sonic times, like the above flashback to Sonic Adventure 2 where Sonic and Shadow went Mano-e-Mano Hedgehog-e-(artificially created)-Hedgehog for the first time. Seeing as though this is published by Archie Comics, we can't wait to see the issue where Blaze the Cat goes up against Mr. Weatherbee.
