RIFT's Update 2.7 wasn't released in one giant package; Trion Worlds held some of it back to deliver piece-meal to the community. As such, today we've been treated to the second pair of new tier 3 raids with the Binding of Laethys. Trion also announced that it's improved its ascend-a-friend program with even more goodies than before. Players will earn referral coins when their recruit makes a purchase in the game, while recruits can teleport to their mentor, earn a 25% XP bonus when grouped up with their friend, and pick up several freebie items. These items are a 16-slot bag, a weapon-glowing rune, a cloak, and a title.

  • Enter at Your Own Rift: Why Summerfest is the best

Over the past few weeks, I've been over on RIFT's test shard to preview some of the changes arriving with update 1.9, like Summerfest. So now that it's live, it was fun to spend some time on the live servers to see it launch. And since I didn't get the chance to spend a lot of time with the Summerfest event, I decided to roll up my sleeves, break out my fishing pole and cooking pan, and try a few of the events and scavenger hunts. I mentioned in a previous column that I thought 1.9 would be the biggest one yet and that it would bring some really important game changes, but my recent adventures in game this past week were even more eye-opening than I expected. • New RIFT Ascend-a-Friend commercial offers players strong incentives

Do you play RIFT? Are you familiar with the Ascend-a-Friend promotion? Of course you are; it's not uncommon for MMOs to offer rewards for recruiting new players after all, and RIFT's program's main advantage is that it's lucky enough to have a clever rhyming scheme. But perhaps you're not convinced that you should be worried about the ascension of your friends or lack thereof. Trion Worlds is taking a big step toward rectifying this with its latest commercial. What's in the commercial? Well, we'd rather not say. But you can trust us when we say that it's a short watch that should prove quite convincing -- not only in displaying the rewards you get for recruiting your friends, but in convincing you of the inherent desirability of these rewards. So jump on past the cut to watch the commercial, and you may very well want to watch it even if you're not currently playing RIFT. [Thanks to Joemamma for the tip!]

  • RIFT founders receive free game client for friends

RIFT founders, check your emails. Trion Worlds has sent out a new offer tied to its Ascend-a-Friend promotion. The program is geared toward early (and multi-month) adopters and their RIFT-less buddies, and aims to bring people together in the world of Telara for hours of adventure and progression. The founder email features a code that grants your friend a free copy of the game client, and as long as your pal signs up under the Ascend-a-Friend program, he'll count towards your reward total. If you manage to convert three friends, you'll receive an Ember Steed which matches the speed of your fastest mount, and probably looks a lot nicer to boot. Your friend isn't left out in the cold, of course. In addition to a free copy of RIFT, Ascend-a-Friend participants will get a unique in-game title ("The Chosen") as well as the ability to summon (or be summoned) to their referring buddy once every half hour.

I've got a problem that nine interventions and three bouts of electroshock therapy have yet to cure: I'm hopelessly addicted to collecting non-combat pets (aka vanity pets) in MMOs. I don't know why that is, exactly, although I've always had a fondness for "fluffy" elements on online games. In my opinion, a lot of what we work for in MMOs is cosmetic anyway -- a really good-looking set of armor, a top-of-the-line mount -- with some piddly stats occasionally making a cameo. (Comment bait? Oh yes, I'm evil that way!) While adding nothing to my combat power nor helping me advance in the game, pets still hold purpose. They are fun to display, particularly if you have rare critters that others haven't seen, and they can give you a feeling of virtual companionship during your journeys. Unlike many collection items, pets have a use -- you can actually do something with them instead of tucking them away where they'll sit collecting pixelated dust. I was pretty pleased to discover that RIFT wasn't going to leave us high and dry when it came to non-combat pets, although it's interesting that they're somewhat harder to come by than in, say, World of Warcraft. If you're like I am, you're scouring the game looking to expand your menagerie, so it might be frustrating to be well on your way to 50 with only a paltry pair of pets to your name. Where is everyone getting all of these? How can I snag a few more? Join me after the jump as we examine six ways to collect crazy critters!

  • New RIFT promo trailer sounds a call to arms

Trion Worlds has released a new RIFT promo trailer appealing to players to join the horde. No, not that Horde. The horde of Ascended in Telara, of course. Now that RIFT's Ascend-a-Friend promotion is in full-swing -- along with the advent of RIFT's patch 1.2, Spoils of War, which brought a new group-finder feature, new rifts, and better rewards for those with a PvP bent -- Trion wants everyone to recruit his friends to come join the battle against the threat of planar invasion. If you've been on the fence trying to decide whether or not to jump into Telara, perhaps this video can sway you. It's short, sweet, and to the point but packed to the brim with spectacular footage of raids, rifts, and more. Will the trailer inspire you to heroism? Will you heed the call to arms? Click on through the cut to have a look and find out.

  • RIFT begins Ascend-a-Friend referral promotion

RIFT players, have you been trying to get your friends to come join you in Telara, but you just can't come up with the right incentive? Trion Worlds has you covered. Beginning tomorrow with the advent of patch 1.2, RIFT subscribers will be able to Ascend-a-Friend into the ranks of the Defiant or Guardians, providing the newly Ascended with a seven-day free trial as well as linking the two players' accounts together. This account link comes with benefits for both the Ascender and the Ascendee. The former will gain in-game rewards -- an adorable Corgi-esque non-combat pet, a stylin' new hat, and a rather menacing flaming horse mount of doom -- for each recruited friend who decides to purchase RIFT. The latter will be granted an exclusive title, "The Chosen," and each player will be given the ability to teleport to the other's location once every 30 minutes. If this sounds like just the thing you needed to get your friends to Telara without having to drag them forcibly, just log in to your Trion Worlds account and click "Ascend-a-Friend" on the left of the page to prepare to bolster your faction's forces with some brave new Ascended.
