With the darker part of the year almost at its peak, today we have one of the darkest areas from Lord of the Rings Online. Today's One Shots shows off an area we've seen before, but not quite from this angle. It was sent in to us by the Hobbit Minstrel, Poplin, who plays on Firefoot (US). He writes in: This is a shot of one of my favorite vistas in Angmar, Barad Gularan. It looks quite evil and foreboding but it has a kind of dark beauty to it as well. We're still on the lookout for more One Shots, so if you get a chance to snap a few, send some our way! We're looking for all games - from AoC to Zu Online, and everything in between. Just send them to us at oneshots AT massively DOT com and show off your favorite game.%Gallery-9798%

With all the great news coming out about a new expansion (yay!) and new classes (yay!) and lots of other great things, (triple-yay!) we had to put out a Lord of the Rings Online screenshot today. This one comes in to us from reader Rexthir of Gondor, who is observing the Fortress of Barad Gularan from a nearby cliff. Do you have a great screenshot of an interesting location that you'd like to show off? We need your screenshots for more game-showy goodness! Toss them into a mail to us here at oneshots@massively.com along with whatever you'd like to tell us about you, or the screenshot. Yours could be up here next!%Gallery-9798%

The environments that Turbine have created for Lord of the Rings Online are obviously crafted with love, always including intricate little details for the fans, so we don't blame them for wanting to show them off. The official LotRO website is running a series called "Exploring Middle Earth" where different landmarks in the game are showcased and described for aspiring travelers. If you've been occupied with the flood of brand spanking new content, this is a nice way of revisiting the roots of the game. The most recent episode features the fortress-ruins of Ost Guruth.Ost Guruth is situated in the Lone-lands, and is a questing hub for levels 20-30, featuring portions of the game's Epic storyline -- but it's more than that too. Exploring Middle Earth hopes to give players an understanding of the lore and history of their favorite zones, and to that end, we learn that the ruins you see now at Ost Guruth belie a mighty past. They were in fact a castle that ended up being a casualty of war... but we won't spoil the details here. You can enjoy the full article via the related story link.Oh, and since we're just now catching up on Exploring Middle Earth (and the earlier entries were from prior to Massively's launch), check out others in the series such as Barad Gúlaran and The Eavespires.

Turbine has gone to great lengths to stay true to J.R.R. Tolkien's gigantic library of Middle-earth lore in The Lord of the Rings Online. Regularly updating the official Lorebook is one of the ways they've tried to appeal to gamers who are fans of the literature.Every now and then they write up a new entry to fill us in on the story behind a place or person in the game world. This week, it's the high-level instance of Barad Gúlaran in Angmar. Barad Gúlaran used to be the fortress of the dreaded Witch-king, chief of Sauron's Nazgúl. When a few heroes chased the Witch-king away in the name of the free peoples of Middle-earth, the fortress was left open for plundering ... but it's still not exactly safe.Turbine included a couple of really nice screenshots of the dungeon, as well. And if lore isn't enough for you, you can learn a bit about the gameplay experience of Barad Gúlaran at the unofficial LOTRO-Wiki. That is, if you can tear yourself away from grinding Deeds!
