  • Gameloft treads on XBL Indie games with Tank Battles

Xbox Live Arcade was once thought to be a bastion of independent game development, destined to help independent studios get their projects to the game-playing masses. While that's still true to a certain extent -- Ska Studios and Polytron say hi -- there's no denying that an increasingly large number of XBLA games are being created by major publishers and development houses. And now it seems as if Xbox Live Indie Games -- quite literally a bastion of independent game development -- might suffer the same fate. Unstoppable mobile game publisher Gameloft (a subsidiary of Ubisoft) is officially entering the Indie Games space with Tank Battles. As the title implies, the game features tanks doing battle from a third-person perspective. If the title sounds familiar, it's because the game was already released on PSN last year as Battle Tanks. The game offers up to 4-players (locally or online) to duke it out and, truth be told, it looks pretty fun. Check out a trailer after the break. [Via GamerBytes]

  • Battle Tanks rolling onto PSN this month for $10

Gameloft is ready to bring that most classic of ideas to the PSN: Tanks blowing each other up. The astoundingly generic name for this iteration on the genre is Battle Tanks, which will be available sometime this month for $10. Don't let our tone fool you, we drool like any other red-blooded gamer at the idea of tanks using assorted weaponry to destroy one another. Death Tank, Doom Tank, Panzer Pincher, Battle Tanks will support a co-op mode for the campaign -- don't see the word "online" there -- and comes with 50 "maze and paint ball-like levels." Multiplayer supports up to four players in death match and ... capture the flag? Clearly we missed the part where the name was changed to Chase Tanks. Ooh! Is the flag some sort of super weapon?

Today sees the release of two new PSN titles with a simplicity of purpose that we find and heartwarming -- Smash Cars and Battle Tanks. No need for high-minded prose or character development here, folks. Give us vehicles running into each other really fast, and we will be satisfied. Also new this week is the totally free Batman: Arkham Asylum "Play as Joker" DLC, a batch of Crash Commando DLC (accompanied by a price cut for the full version of the game), demos for NHL 10 and F.E.A.R. 2: Reborn, and more content for Disgaea 3 than our minds can currently comprehend. Seriously, we're going to be contemplating the uses of an "Action Prinny" for the rest of the day. Choose your platform to view the corresponding release list: (Note: Continue past the break to view both release lists.)

    Hands-on: Battle Tanks

Battle Tanks, coming to the PlayStation Network from mobile developer Gameloft this July, feels very familiar. At its heart, the game's a two-stick shooter with a few interesting mechanics to help differentiate it from the crowd (bullets ricochet off of walls and power-ups break up the monotony). Which isn't to say what we played of the the game was bad -- it felt like digital distribution's equivalent of a rental-worthy game -- which is quite the dilemma, considering the PSN-based distribution of the title.Commanding a World War 2-era tank, we piloted ourselves around a handful of different square maps, where a variety of enemy tanks and power-ups laid in our path. The layout of each level's semi-destructible environments helped to dictate our tactics while we dominated Destructoid's Ben Perlee -- er, rather, while he blew himself up, given that ricocheting bullets (even your own) can mean game over. While we weren't exactly jonesin' for more once the demo had ended, Battle Tanks' detailed environments and combination shooter/puzzle gameplay could very easily help us while away an empty Saturday. Too bad we can't rent it.%Gallery-65353%

  • PSN Battle Tanks revealed by German ratings board

The last time Germany's USK ratings board hinted at a new Gameloft-developed PSN game, it proved to be completely accurate. So, there's a good chance that Gameloft's recently discovered Battle Tanks for PSN is totally legit, too. So far, all we know about Battle Tanks is that it's for PS3 and it's a downloadable strategy game, given its "arcade" and "skill" classifications. Oh, and lastly, it will most likely feature battles and tanks to some degree. Call it a hunch. [Via GamerBytes]
