  • Skyforge offers two contests for those who seek beta keys

Is the only thing you want for Christmas a nice shiny Skyforge beta key? If so... wow, you are aiming really low when it comes to gifts this year. We usually at least would ask for a game, not test access to a game. Besides, you could get one completely for free by taking part in one of two contests. The first is a straightforward raffle-style giveaway on Facebook: Just "like" the game's page and submit your account email, and 500 lucky entrants will get a beta key. But for those who want a key and prefer not to leave it up to chance, there's a forum thread asking players to name the critter they see in the header above. The five best entries will receive a beta key, followed by a vote-off of all the suggested names. So there's a chance at getting in just based on your creativity at naming things, which might be more your style. The name contest will run until December 22nd, while the Facebook entries are accepted until January 15th. [Thanks to Gabriel for the tip!]

  • HEX drops beta key requirement but denies status of open beta

A major announcement has been sounded on the HEX forums: No longer will potential players need a beta key to test the game, as that requirement has been dropped as of last week. Cryptozoic claims that this move doesn't signify that the game is in open beta, but merely a way to draw in even more people than ever before. "I bet you're asking yourself why not just call it open beta?," the team posted. "Well, we're not ready to call it open beta. However, we've reached a point in our testing where we needed to increase the volume of players on our servers to provide us with additional information and logs." Splitting hairs over semantics aside, now everyone can check out this unique trading card MMO if so desired. There doesn't appear to be any NDA restriction either, as the devs have encouraged players to stream the game.

So you want to preorder Mists of Pandaria but can't wait for more than a month to feast your eyes on the new continent, races and class? Well, the good folks at Amazon and GameStop are offering free beta keys with all preorders! With Amazon, if you buy either the standard or the collector's edition, you will be emailed your beta key within five business days of your purchase. The offer will be extended to all existing preorders and will expire Sept. 17. It's only valid on products shipped and sold by Amazon.com. GameStop offers a very similar promotion, but if you buy the game in-store, your beta key will be printed straight onto your store receipt when you place your preorder. If you buy online from GameStop.com, the code will be emailed to you within two business days of your purchase. Just like Amazon, this offer is valid for either the standard or the collector's edition. Unfortunately, at the time of writing, it doesn't look like Amazon has rolled out this offer to stores in the EU, and GameStop U.K. doesn't even seem to have Mists in stock. If we hear word that this changes, we will of course let you know! [Thanks for the tip, Kamaron!]

    07.13.2012

As if to test out the official site after a maintenance, XLGAMES doled out a double dose of ArcheAge news. First, players were informed that the first wave of invites for Closed Beta Test Five have gone out to players who met two requirements: CBT4 stress test participation on February 17th and hitting level 25 in CBT4. Others who have applied to test will still have a chance to get in to CBT5 during more invitation rounds based on a lottery selection method. The second news posting explains that XLGAMES received and accepted a new rating of Mature in Korea for sexual content, blood and gore, and drug abuse. The company indicated that new and future sandbox features in the game would probably have disqualified the game from a Teen rating eventually. [Thanks to Dengar for the tip!]

Did you drop your name into CCP Games' hat as a potential tester for DUST 514? Then tomorrow might be a lovely day for you, as the studio is emailing out the first round of closed beta keys for registered participants after a short delay from its original key-handing-out schedule. It is unknown how many keys will be sent out and to whom. Last month, CCP told Fanfest attendees that they would be among the first to test the anticipated MMOFPS. The DUST 514 website states that the studio is sending out Fanfest keys first and keys to standard registered players "soon after." To celebrate the release of the closed beta keys, CCP is holding a "special event" over the weekend. The details of this event are forthcoming. [Update: CCP has confirmed that beta registration has begun today and that EVE players and Fanfest attendees will get first pick.]

Finally, En Masse is releasing an e-book called The Amaranthine Heart which expounds on TERA's lore and backstory. It's available for a palty $.99 on Amazon (and the instance video is free of charge after the cut).
