The Star Wars franchise is not without political intrigue. Characters like Palpatine and Senator Organa and even groups like the Jedi Council had political story arcs in Episodes I, II, and III. We also know that BioWare has an incredible ability to weave together a complicated tapestry of political overtones in its Mass Effect and DragonAge stories while at the same time keeping the major story very personal. Today, developers of Star Wars: The Old Republic introduced us to two political figures and a Bounty Hunter with strong political feelings. Our Bounty Hunter is a Zabrak named Jewl'a Nightbringer. This adept hunter won the Mandalorian Great Hunt, leaving no captures alive. She then won hundreds of Mandalorian honor duels. You see, this particular hunter grew up on Coruscant at the time the Hydian Way was blocked by Mandalorian warships. She grew up poor and fended for herself. Her deep-seated hatred for the Mandalorians brought her to their Great Hunt to prove her victory over them. Then, we have the cold Sith Council member Darth Jadus. The other Lords of the council are wary of Jadus because of his affinity towards non-Force wielding underlings. Imperial Agents will no doubt meet this Council Lord on more than one occasion because of his influence on Imperial Intelligence. Lastly, we have the Supreme Chancellor of the Republic, Janarus. This humble leader was thrust into power shortly after the Sacking of Coruscant, which left his home-world crippled. Although the Senate unanimously voted him into office, his supporters are now slowly fracturing. Check out the Biographies on the official website to read more about these intriguing Old Republic characters.

The fourth pillar of story has just widened its base this morning as BioWare announced three more supporting characters to the line-up. An Alderaani noble, a tight-lipped Sullustan, and an Imperial super-spy brand the front web page of Star Wars: The Old Republic. Who are they, and what role do they play in the world arc? The Alderaani known as Bouris Ulgo "gave us pants" according to Daniel Erickson's joke at the PAX presentation. However, the truth is Ulgo is the self-proclaimed King of Alderaan. What role does the House of Ulgo play in the conflict on this independent planet? That is yet to be discovered, but we do know Ulgo has gone mad since the return of the banished House of Thule (not the one from the EverQuest expansion -- it confused me, too.) Diab Duin is the Sullustan diplomat Supreme Chancellor entrusted to keep the secret of Aeten II. It is possible the Chancellor believed this quiet pessimist would be over-looked by Imperial spies and assassins, but one this is for certain: the secret of the stygium crystals is safe with him. When one has risen to the the upper echelons of Imperial Intelligence, he loses his personal identity and becomes known only by his code name. In this case, we are talking about the "Keeper." Every unscrupulous deal of assassination or territorial infiltration is controlled by the Keeper. If he fails at his job, the Empire is quick to replace him. To find out more about these spies and nobles of the SWTOR universe, check out their biographies on the official site.

Fridays are traditionally a day for BioWare to let slip a little bit more info about their upcoming Star Wars: The Old Republic MMORPG. Today is no different, as the official web site has been updated with a brand new Holonet feature called Biographies. The new section is arranged by faction, and to kick things off, BioWare has tidbits on Grand Moff Kilran ('the Butcher of Coruscant'), Nemro the Hutt, and Jedi Grand Master Satele Shan. As is also tradition around the official site, there are a few blank spaces left visible to whet our collective appetites for future updates. Check out the news release as well as the bio page proper.
