One downfall of being a history major is that every time a game is announced with the word "history" in it, something in the "must have" part of your brain clicks, making you want a piece of software that you suspect won't be all that great, anyway. The latest game to attack this blogger's mental stability is another addition in Slitherine's History Channel line, called HISTORY Great Empires: Rome. (Note: The History Channel is now just called History, which is why you don't see the word "channel" somewhere in the game's title.) We heard whispers about this game before, but now know that it will release sometime this summer. This Black Bean title, which is some kind of follow-up to The History Channel: Great Battles of Rome game, involves strategy, diplomacy, city-building, warfare, exploration, and all that good stuff. There will also be some "bonus" minigames involved. History nerds that we are, we'll be looking out for this.[Via press release]

  • Evolution GT joins growing field of 'serious' DS racers

The DS is to play host to its own version of Evolution GT, a 2006 PlayStation 2 and PC racer which, if we're being entirely honest, none of the DS Fanboy team are actually familiar with. Hence, a quick trip to Metacritic is in order (we call this "journalism"), where the two previous versions of Evolution GT currently sit on ... 60% and 61% respectively. Bah.Anyway, for the (hopefully superior) DS edition, we'll be able to get behind the wheel of officially licensed GT cars such as the Corvette Z06, Mercedes-Benz SLK, and Audi A4 Touring Car, and subsequently bounce from barrier to barrier around courses set all over Europe. There's also a multiplayer mode for up to four players, and the game will be joining the small list of titles that use the DS's Rumble Pak.It's out on June 23rd this year, by which time it should have plenty of healthy competition.[Via press release]

Black Bean Games recently announced that they're making a game for the Wii (and other platforms) based on the comic book character Diabolik. If, like us, you're not exactly familiar with obscure Italian 1960s comic books, the press release describes Diabolik as a merciless anti-hero who also happens to like gadgets. The release also mentions that Diabolik: The Original Sin will be a point-and-click adventure game that includes combat fighting and stealth sequences. What we find most interesting, though, is that the game will mix 2D comic animations in black and white with 3D real-time graphics. If Artematica (a developer that we're not familiar with) pulls that off well, Diabolik could turn out to be a very stylish game. The game is currently scheduled for an autumn release in Europe and PAL territories.[Thanks, Lego!]
