Come tomorrow, Blackbeard, the most notorious pirate this side of Johnny Depp doing a Keith Richards impression, joins the multiplayer roster in Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag. Loyal Joystiq readers should recall hints of this addition from two weeks back when a leaked Trophy list hinted at the inclusion of the infamous pirate in an upcoming downloadable addition. That list also mentioned Jaguar and Orchid characters who will be added to the game. What can we expect from arguably the most infamous cutthroat to ever sail the high seas? Ubisoft puts it thusly: "Blackbeard, wielding his sword and short temper, is not to be trifled with. His reputation as a feared pirate is justly received, and his preferred kill moves include using his tremendous strength to throw his targets off balance and quickly finishing them with one clean strike." As for logistics, the new DLC (dubbed "Blackbeard's Wrath") will be available on the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3 and 4, and PC. Each of these iterations will set you back $3, though if you already purchased the Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag season pass, Blackbeard and his cronies will be available totally gratis. There is currently no word on when or if Blackbeard will set sail on the Wii U, and Ubisoft representatives have yet to respond to our inquiries.

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag will be adding three new characters to its multiplayer roster including the famous pirate Blackbeard, alleges a new PlayStation 3 Trophy listing. That list includes all of the game's standard Trophies as well as those earned by playing its Freedom Cry DLC, but next to those entries are four Trophies for an as yet unrevealed multiplayer addition dubbed "Blackbeard's Wrath." The Trophies themselves don't give away the full scope of what the DLC will add to the game, but they do mention three new playable characters: The Orchid, The Jaguar and Blackbeard himself. Those who have played Assassin's Creed 4 will know that the first two are fictional constructs created for use in the Animus, while Blackbeard was an actual pirate who, according to legend, was even more of a gnarled, terrifying figure than he is in the game. The Trophy listing for Blackbeard asks players to perform an aerial assassination then a pistol assassination within ten seconds with the character - an appropriately brutal homage to a man who routinely tied lit matches into his beard before combat simply because it looked spooky. There is currently no word on when Blackbeard's Wrath might arrive.

Yaaaaaar maties, it be me again, Cap'n Phineas Blackbeard (ye may remember my old guide to the most piratical o' quests), and I be back again, today, September the 19th, because today, ye scurvy dogs, be Pirates' Day! My old flame Dread Captain DeMeza will be hanging out in Booty Bay and causin' all kinds of trouble under the nose of old Baron Revilgaz, so ye can head down to the southern shores, listen to some shantys with those old swashbucklers, and maybe even win some loot. If ye like, ye can even go and visit DeMeza with the scallywags from this here WoW.com site (though between you and me, some of them smell like the inside of a whale's belly, especially that landlubber Schramm). And of course, all of ye yellow-bellied scallywags should spend the whole day talking like a pirate as best ye can, and maybe even wear an eyepatch. Y'know, for the nightvision. And just in case ye don't get enough grog today -- HA! Get it? "Enough grog"? A good pirate knows ye can never have enough grog! -- don't forget that Brewfest starts tomorrow. Stay tuned to this here vessel for more information about how ye can get all of the achievements and titles and dragons and treasure chests ye desire. Have a great Pirates' Day, and then get back to swabbing the poop deck, ye peg-legged, pox-faced mutinous cur! Dead men tell no tales! Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!%Gallery-32280%

  • Warcry interviews Pirates' Content Director on creating a virtual Caribbean

Lots of the talk about Pirates lately has been about game specifics, but in interviewing FLS' content director, Warcry has taken a different path-- they've gotten into the historical basis and influence of the virtual Caribbean that we'll all be sailing around in come January. The list of pirate influences on the game is impressive-- they've got everything from Monkey Island to Horatio Hornblower on there. And they've got a lot of historical accuracy as well-- just as there was no real authority in the real pirate-filled Caribbean of days past, FLS wants to make it so that there is no authority in this one, either. Carry a ship full of valuables, and risk losing them all. Real-life historical figures will also make an appearance (both Kidd and Blackbeard are mentioned), and just like in real-life, wind is a major factor when sailing around (though in my experience, wind was more frustrating than anything-- it makes strategy in battles fun, but when I was just trying to sail somewhere, not having the wind at my back was a real pain).Nice to hear about all the influences FLS is putting into the game. A couple of your intrepid Massively writers are set for a press tour of the game later today, so hopefully we'll get a chance to see the other, non-historical side of the game: the supernatural endgame elements.

Yarrr maties! It be me, ol' Cap'n Blackbeard, here ta tell ya about some of of me favorite quests in Azeroth! What, ye don't think us pirates are noble enough t'go on quests? Well, ye're right-- obeying is for landlubbin' scallywags. But we'll do anything to get piratey treasure, so occasionally yer pirate captain assists in a quest or two in between his normal piratical duties (those being combing his luxurious black beard, and makin' landlubbers walk the plank). And when that happens, it's only best pirate quests for your blackbearded leader! Here's my favorite pirate quests in the game, in no particular order, ye scurvy-ridden dogs!Pirate Hats Ahoy! Pirate hats ahoy is right! There's no bigger humiliation to a pirate than stealin' 'is hat, and those Southsea scallywags are askin' fer it! Go to Steamwheedle Port in Tanaris at level 40, and talk to Haughty Modiste-- she'll send you south to a secret pirate cove where it'll be time for fisticuffs! And don't forget to grab Southsea Shakedown while you're there, too-- you'll need to kill the same lubbers for that one.Deep Ocean, Vast Sea The ocean, she's a mean mistress, and ye can't know Davy Jones' locker until ye been down in it, fightin' fer yer life! At level 12 in Darkshore (at Auberdine), Gorbold Steelhand will send ye on the hardest journey ye've ever seen-- some say the hardest in the game! I don't know what ye mongrels are caterwhalin' about. Just swim down there and get the chests! And when you get back, scrub the deck until yer cap'n can see his handsome face in it! Finish the job or get fed to the kraken!
