What does Christmas look like in Telara? There's probably snow, and elves, and according to the latest Trion news blurb, there are lots of presents too. First of all, the RIFT client is available for a paltry $4.99 starting tomorrow. And of course there's plenty of "cheer, joy, charity, and battling a never-ending stream of extra-dimensional monsters bent on undoing reality." To help you in your quest to save the world from demons and bad Christmas music, Trion is running a pretty spiffy promotion from December 22nd through January 2nd. RIFT subscribers will enjoy 15% bonuses on kill XP, favor, prestige, plaques of achievement, marks of ascension, and planarite throughout the holidays, and you can learn more about the game at its official website. • Bonus round: RuneScape kicks off a weekend of extra XP gain

    09.09.2011

RuneScape players, it's time to put your key in the ignition and slam the pedal to the floor -- you have a full weekend of bonus XP ahead of you! The weekend kicked off at 7:00 a.m. EDT this morning and will continue until the same time on Monday, September 12th. During this weekend event, RuneScape subscribers -- not free players -- will enjoy a hearty bonus to their training activities rate. The bonus multiplier begins at 2.7 times the normal rate and decreases in percentage every half-hour played after that, until it hits 1.1 times the normal rate of XP gain, at which point it will remain until the bonus weekend is over. This bonus rate will not be used up if a player is logged out or in the game's lobby and does not affect quest XP, XP rewards at the end of activities, assist XP, the circus, and XP that is awarded via items. Because of the unique nature of the Summoning skill, Summoning will be locked in at a 1.1 bonus rate for the duration of the event.

Pick out your favorite grind spots, adventurers (and tradeskillers too, for that matter), as Sony Online Entertainment is trotting out an EverQuest II double experience weekend starting on Friday, September 2nd. The XP smorgasbord will end on Monday, September 5th, so if you've got no plans for the Labor Day weekend as of yet, why not spend a portion of it in Norrath? It's as good a time as any to check out the new itemization revamp that debuted with the recent GU 61 patch, and don't forget that the bonus applies to alternate advancement experience as well. More details are available via EQ2Wire and the official EQII website.

It's hard to believe -- but amazing nevertheless -- that RIFT is almost a half-year old. Six months ago, hundreds of thousands of gamers rushed through the gates to become the first to explore Telara, included me, and we were introduced to what's become one of the most dominating MMOs of the year. Following this smooth release (and it was smooth), Trion Worlds set a remarkable standard for itself by pumping out meaty content updates at a steady, rapid pace and marketing RIFT out the wazoo. We've already witnessed two live events, numerous subscription specials, the addition of a ginormous raid, and my not having hit 50 yet -- to my eternal embarrassment. Of course, there have been bumps in the road as well: a lackluster initial world event, a segment of disgruntled players and opponents, and the looming specter of several heavy-hitting MMOs waiting in the wings. But for right here and right now, this is Trion's time, and the company is taking advantage of this half-year milestone to light the fireworks and lay out the good china in celebration. We got on the phone with Scott Hartsman and his Justice League to talk about what the studio has up its sleeves for this event -- and what's next for this rapidly expanding title.

Citizens of Norrath, mark your calendars! Bonus experience is coming to EverQuest II this weekend and you'll want to be sure to avail yourself of what the EQII website calls a "true double XP promotion (+100% XP)." The bonus applies to adventure, tradeskill, and alternate advancement experience, so don't leave your crafter alts or level-locked and AA-starved characters out in the cold. Double XP starts at 12:01 a.m. PDT on Friday, July 29th and runs through 11:59 p.m. PDT on Sunday, July 31st. It's also good across all the game servers including the free-to-play EQII Extended shard and French, German, and Japanese realms.

Dear NCsoft, You have missed me! Why else would you tempt me with the announcement a few days ago that patch 2.6 will be hitting Aion's live servers on August 3rd but to lure me back indoors? It is true that we haven't spent as much time together lately; I have strayed a bit, seduced by the sunshine, sunblock, and sand between my toes that goes with a summer outdoors. Can you really blame me? I certainly haven't wanted it to end, but a body simply needs more than the same old, same old to keep a long-term relationship fresh. And we are talking sunshine! I am heartened that you seem more serious about combating staleness in our relationship. After all, you aren't leaving me hanging in anticipation for months on end as you did with your last update, Empyrean Calling. Truly, smaller and more frequent gestures are better appreciated than one large one once in a blue moon. And I am sure the events preceding the patch will offer some diversion as I await Aion's newest content. Hmmm, heatstroke or heat wave? Alright, you have convinced me; I am willing to forgo the great outdoors and dedicate more time to us! However, as we renew this commitment, I feel I must be open with you -- even as I look forward to our new times together, I have a few questions I would be remiss not to ask. Surely you can put my mind at ease past the cut?

  • Experience 21x XP during Gears 2's 4th of July weekend

    07.02.2011

We have a sneaking suspicion that Epic Games' Joe Graf may actually be a real-life hobbit in disguise, because he's giving everyone else presents on his birthday. In celebration of his 42 years of being alive (as well as that whole American freedom thing), Epic Games has turned Gears of War 2's XP knob all the way up to 21-times-normal from now until 9 A.M. EDT on July 5th. The game has also been tweaked to provide 4-times the normal amount of ammunition for the Hammer of Dawn, as well as the mortar, so those without fireworks can have almost as much fun blowing things up in their living rooms over the holiday weekend. Virtual things, we mean ... let's not nuke the coffee table, alright?

Sony Online Entertainment's Recruit-a-Friend program (otherwise known as the powerlevel-your-alts-with-multiple-accounts program) has been a hit in EverQuest II for quite some time now. Recruits and recruiters will enjoy a wealth of benefits including in-game mounts, bonus Station Cash, Legends of Norrath booster packs, a unique title, and of course, loads of bonus XP. Check out all the details on the o-boards, then hit up the official RaF page to get started.

Aika players will also be treated to an XP bonus for the remainder of June, while July will feature various bonus events designed to bring everyone up to speed for the expansion. • More double XP on tap for Aion

    06.10.2010

Remember how NCsoft said prior to the 1.9 patch that there wouldn't be any more of their patented Aion double XP weekends for awhile? Well forget all that as this Friday, June 11th, marks the beginning of yet another scrumptious smorgasbord of sweet, sweet experience for your level-hungry Daevas. We're not sure what changed their minds (and frankly we don't care as long as the spice keeps flowing), but one thing we are sure of is that the event has caused us to rethink our weekend gaming plans. When combined with the hefty repeatable quest XP rewards littering the landscape around Heiron post-patch, we'd be remiss for not scarfing up as much as humanly possible. We might even, gasp, approach max level. All that aside, you can check out the press release over on the official Aion website.

Wednesday's night out with OnedAwesome was...well, awesome, per the usual. Massively's Dungeons and Dragons Online guild ran through five quests taken from the Leaky Dinghy and Stormreach Harbor. We patted Durk on the head and told him that his secret was super special and he was too, busted some evil gambling tables of evilness, fetched an item for House Phiarlan that we are almost certain it was okay for them to have, and walked the Butcher's Path. Things are settling down a bit in OnedAwesome, but certainly not through a lack of activity. The guild is quickly evolving from a random group of people scrambling to figure out what is happening and who is grouping with whom. It's becoming an organized guild where everyone has a bit of a feel about where they fit, and people sorted into groups very quickly Wednesday and were off having fun in record time. I'm very excited to see everyone next Wednesday -- I won't tell you quite yet what our plans are, but I have a bit of a surprise that I hope everyone will love. We'll meet Wednesday evening at 9:00 PM EST, but I'll be around from 8:30 on to field any questions, requests, and guild invitations. So feel free to /tell Rubialina a bit early if you need anything. In the meantime, follow along after the jump for some tips and tricks. This is another one devoted to our newer players, and hopefully this will get you navigating dungeons like a pro in no time.

Nexon's Dungeon Fighter Online has launched its new Awakening update, bringing with it eight new sub-classes as well as the ability for players to join a guild. The guild system kicks off with several incentives, including a reduced initiation fee (payable via Dungeon Fighter's in-game currency), double Guild XP, and prizes for the first five guilds that reach level five. Leveling up your new guild is as easy as rolling through dungeons with your mates. The rewards include monster transformation potions and Noble Warrior Potions which recover health and mana points. The winning guilds will be announced on May 26, so grab your friends and start earning those guild levels. In addition to the guild contest, Dungeon Fighter Online also features a promotional event for the new Awakening classes. Avatars created during the launch event will receive double the normal number of life tokens, as well as a class advancement gift appropriate to any of the newly introduced sub-classes. Also, players choosing one of the new sub-classes (Asura, Battle Mage, Berserker, Elementalist, Launcher, Nen Master, Spitfire and Striker) will grant bonus XP to any groups they join.
