Conquer Online is co-opting one of martial arts cinema's greatest stars to be a playable character in its game. The team announced that it is bringing in a Bruce Lee "tribute" character called Lee-Long in a future update. "Many companies have put him in games to salute him, but there was no one putting his elements into an MMORPG," said the team. "As a popular oriental fantasy MMORPG in North America, and with the elements of martial arts and the Dragon combined, Conquer Online has the responsibility to create a character to show our respect to Bruce Lee." The creation of Lee-Long took a full year of work and involved motion capture and close examination of Bruce Lee's films. Bruce Lee died in 1973, but has remained a pop culture icon ever since. The team is being coy about the connection between Bruce Lee and Lee-Long, but said "more details" about be given soon. You can watch a making of video for Lee-Long after the break. • 'EA Sports UFC' looks to bring out the mixed martial arts fighter in you

Given the success of franchises like FIFA and Madden, it's easy to see why EA would want to commit valuable resources to developing an MMA title, a sport that's been getting bigger and bigger over the past few years. But the road for creating this new game, dubbed EA Sports UFC, wasn't an easy one. The relationship between UFC President Dana White and EA had its complications a few years ago. Back then, the developer reportedly wasn't interested in making a title for the mixed martial arts company, which is what started the kerfuffle between them. Because of this, UFC eventually hooked up with THQ to create a game, while EA Sports went on to develop its own MMA series. Still, neither of these things lasted too long. And after the unfortunate demise of THQ, EA Sports eventually reached a deal with UFC, granting it licensing rights for the popular MMA league. The by-product? EA Sports UFC.

  • EA Sports UFC trailer empties its mind with Bruce Lee

This trailer for EA Sports UFC discusses Bruce Lee's impact on the sport of mixed martial arts and shows snippets of Lee in action within the digital octagon. Lee was revealed as an unlockable character for the game in April, available to those that beat the game's career mode on pro difficulty or higher. EA Sports UFC's career mode was detailed at the end of April, and offers players the chance to fight their way out of the reality show competition The Ultimate Fighter while improving their fighter's skills and attracting money-making sponsors. Career mode players will need to balance "longevity" and "popularity" gauges by finishing their battles in spectacular fashion while also staying healthy to prolong their time in the UFC. Players will want to extend the amount of time they spend with the game, as EA CEO Andrew Wilson contemplated a bi-annual release schedule for games in the series in late March. That may free up the publisher's Fight Night team to develop a new boxing game, as the series is currently on hold while the team works on EA Sports UFC. The MMA game is due out June 17 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and a demo for the game is expected either before or shortly after it launches. [Image: EA Sports]

EA Sports UFC's long-teased mystery fighter is Bruce Lee, and the late great martial artist is unlockable to all players who beat the career mode on pro difficulty or higher. EA also revealed the Enter the Dragon star enters the ring on June 17, when the Xbox One and PS4 game body slams onto retail shelves in North America. Europe joins the fight on June 19, and the UK specifically a day later on June 20. "It has always been part of our vision to have Bruce Lee, the most iconic martial artist of all time, in the first ever EA Sports UFC," said Creative Director Brian Hayes. "The team is very excited and tremendously honored to have the privilege of bringing Bruce Lee to life in our game. We've been working closely with the Bruce Lee team to ensure we represent the legend with as much visual and gameplay fidelity as possible." When you unlock Lee, you can play as him in the Flyweight, Batnamweight, Featherweight, and Lightweight divisions. If you want your fists of fury with no delay, the good news is if you pre-order the MMA fighter, he's available as a "Day One" unlock. [Image: EA]

The creators of Commodore 64, that emulator app that eventually gained Apple's blessing, emailed to say that they have released a brand new version [iTunes link] with some brand new (old) C64 games to revisit. The gist of this one is that you can buy C64 ROMs to play through in-app purchases, but right out of the gate with version 1.2, three different games are free: Bruce Lee, Laser Squad, and Samurai Warrior. So if any of those ring your nostalgic bell, you can go jump in on the app now -- it's $1.99. If you want to add in some extra games, it'll cost you 99 cents each, but they've now made Alleykat, Uridium, Paradroid, Stormlord and Nebulus all available that way. Unfortunately, not all emulator developers have been able to secure such a deal with Apple, but C64 enthusiasts have to be excited about what's available with this one.

  • The Digital Continuum: My only problem with Free Realms

I love Free Realms, so don't get me wrong when I say I've finally found a problem with it. What's that problem, you (hypothetically) ask? It's full of regular people and faeries, and what manly guy wants that? No, sir, not me. There's certainly nothing wrong with a man who prefers to flutter about on dainty wings, or a man who just wants to be a 'Regular Joe' -- but what of the rest who just want to express their inner macho man? I think we need some representation! That's why I've done all the creative footwork for Sony Online Entertainment and thought up a bunch of great concepts for manly races to add into Free Realms. That way, when hairy manly men log into the game after a hard day of sweating and lifting heavy things, they'll feel right at home.

Bruce Campbell has consistently displayed the essence of being a 100%, all-around bad-a** dude in his many film and television performances. Whether as Ash proudly displaying his boom stick for all to see, or as Autolycus showing Hercules how a real man gets the ladies, this Bruce never falters. Campbell (in any of his various famed roles) would be my prime avatar choice for prospective players to mine, deliver mail and fight cute goblins in Free Realms.

If Nokia had any sense, they'd expand the action-doll bundle to the world beyond Hong Kong. Even for 8,788 Chinese Yuan (about $1,286) we're seriously tempted. Watch Bruce clean up at ping pong in the Nokia video posted after the break -- no, really.[Via Unwired View, Thanks Robin oL]

  • What's in a name?

The names of equipment in the World of Warcraft are really hit or miss. You have a few that are absolutely amazing, some that are downright awful. On the one hand, you have Crul'shorukh, Edge of Chaos. Stop reading for a second, and say that out loud. Crul'shorukh, Edge of Chaos. Roll it around on your tongue, savor the flavor. That name alone radiates manliness, and it helps that it was a darn good weapon in its day. If Bruce Lee and John Wayne had a child, I bet its name would be Crul'shorukh. This right here is the height of awesome. And then... then, you come across the Wand of Happiness. Come on, really? The Wand of Happiness? When I spotted this in Nagrand, I completely forgot whether I was playing the World of Warcraft or Cuddly Pink Ponies in Dreamland. Am I supposed to be slaying orcs and dragons by the dozen or rolling dice to see if I get to wear the pretty tiara? Well... I guess I'm doing both, technically, but thats not the point. How about Wand of Blowing Stuff Up instead? Eh? Ehh? Yeah, that's what the World of Warcraft is really all about.Crul'shorukh. Mmm.

  • Xbox was the Hulk, 360 is Bruce Lee

There's an interesting article up on FastCompany.com concerning the design of our beloved white box. By now, the iconic "inhale" design is well known by the game industry in general and 360 fans in particular. What you may not know is the inspiration of the famous design: Bruce Lee. During the design process, Microsoft had narrowed down its design candidates to three firms. Among these was JDK, the design firm created by Jake Burton Carpenter, founder of Burton Snowboards. Microsoft had agreed to see all three presentations and choose the winner from among them. JDK went first. By the time the presentation was over, the Xbox team already knew who had won.According to JDK's Michael Jager, the original Xbox was about power. Not just power, but brute force. To demonstrate this, Jager sliced an "X" into a piece of paper and thrust his head through it, shouting, "X today is all AARGGHHH!" He compared it to the Incredible Hulk. Taking the paper and reversing it, Jager demonstrated that the "X" could also be a doorway, something more inviting. Jager convinced Microsoft that the Xbox 360 would have to demonstrate power, but show a hint of grace and elegance as well. In other words, the "new" Xbox had to be Bruce Lee, not the Hulk. In fact, the "inhale" design was derived from Bruce Lee as well, mimicking an inhalation of breath before a powerful strike. The rest of the article details some of JDK's background and a few more bits about the Xbox 360 process. It's not exactly as exciting as say, Devil May Cry 4, but it's worth reading for those curious about the creation of the Xbox 360. Hit the "read" link to check it out.

  • Bruce Lee and Dukes of Hazzard coming to HD DVD

Warner Home Video isn't showing off their September HD DVD releases just yet, but they have added two movies for release July 11. HDTV owners have been clamoring for bigger and better titles on high definition DVD formats and while these may not be the special-effect loaded killer titles we would like to see, they aren't bad either. Dukes of Hazzard did pretty well at the box office last year starring the guy from Jackass, Stifler and a pop singer as the Dukes family. Now it comes to HD DVD with Warner's In Movie Experience (IME) feature promising a "trouble-making, car-crashing, barroom-brawling in-movie viewing experience". We were hoping for a silent version of Jessica Simpson's music video, but this will have to do.The other movie announced is Bruce Lee's Enter the Dragon, originally released just after his death and possibly his most popular movie in the U.S. Both movies will feature the same extras as their DVD counterparts and carry an SRP of $28.99. Warner is still expected to release on Blu-ray as well, but we haven't received any information on dates or titles.
