While we wait for Google's latest to hit the virtual shelves in our neck of the woods, Australian buyers have already seen the Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 go on sale, appearing around noon locally. AusDroid reports the 16GB Nexus 4 went out of stock in just 22 minutes, followed by the 8GB version and 32GB Nexus 10. additionally, Android Central reports that official bumpers for the Nexus 4 have appeared in the Google Play store. We didn't have problems with our review units but since the LG-built handset is rocking glass front and back they may be the difference between a close call and a sob story -- friends who've smashed an iPhone 4 (or more than one) likely have relevant tales to share. Readers have emailed saying Google Play customer service reps indicated new Nexus sales will start at noon ET here as well, but without official word we'd probably just keep an eye on our inbox / clicking that refresh key to be safe. Update: Sales appear to have gone live for customers in Europe, specifically UK and Spain, right about...now (3AM ET), those that can actually pull up the site at the moment may be able to get a purchase through. Update 2: Google has confirmed that UK stock of the Nexus 4 has already been exhausted just hours after going on sale. [Thanks, Jeffrey Powell]

  • Universal iPhone bumper found in Apple Store, mute button gets more space (video)

We were wondering how Apple was going to handle two different button configurations for its AT&T and Verizon iPhones, and well, the solution couldn't be simpler. One reader visiting the Apple Store stumbled upon a bumper with a slightly different packaging. Thankfully, this intrigued him enough to pick one up and do a side-by-side comparison between this new "universal case" and the old first-party solution. The only change, since volume buttons are mapped identically between the two, is a slot for the mute button that's decidedly less mute. Definitely works with his AT&T model and should theoretically fit Verizon's model, too. Tough luck if you're making a move to Big Red and trying to bring an old case, but let's be honest... you'd be paying a pretty penny for the new device anyway, so what's a few more dollars for physical protection? Video comparison after the break. [Thanks, Alex!]

  • Apple Store is down... and back up, with no changes

The store's down!* We're not sure why (if I had to guess, I'd say they're updating the listings for bumper cases, since those recently returned to the retail shelves), but we'll keep an eye on things and let you know what's new when it comes back. Meanwhile, don't panic. We want a new iPod nano, too, but you can surely wait a few more minutes until the store returns to normal. *In the United States, anyway. Update: The store is back up, but there are no obvious changes staring us in the face. If you see something we've missed, let us know in the comments.

  • Rumor: Bumpers coming back to Apple Stores

Did you miss out on Apple's free case program for your iPhone 4? If so, you're out of luck. If you have reception issues with your iPhone 4, you can return it as usual, but at this point, Apple believes that everyone should know about the Antennagate issue, so there are no more free cases. This also means that bumpers are back on sale. While you could easily get a free one, they disappeared from Apple Store shelves, but as of today, bumpers are reportedly available again. Unfortunately, they're still not for sale online, but presumably that will be fixed soon. Word has it that they're heading back to the US$29 price point, too. If you're buying an iPhone today or in the future, what are your plans for a case?

  • Reminder: Get your free iPhone case by September 30th

Apple's iPhone 4 case program page reminds you that if you haven't jumped on the free case they're offering for the Antennagate issue, you're running out of time. The free case program will expire on September 30th, so if you haven't yet, run on over there, download the app to your iPhone, and choose a case for Apple to send off to you. Or, if you are planning to buy an iPhone 4 but haven't yet, you might want to jump on it before the month ends -- some of the cases can sell for up to $30, so essentially you're getting a nice discount if it was something you would have bought anyway. There are certainly plenty of other cases to buy, and I've been using my iPhone for the past week or so without a case at all and it's worked just fine, but September 30 is the cutoff, so make a decision by then for sure. A better question might be when we're actually going to get the cases ordered from the app -- of course it's going to take a while to ship all of these free cases out to all of Apple's customers, but at this point I'm wondering how long after the program actually expires before Apple has sent out cases to everyone who applied for one. • Surprisingly affordable wooden iPhone skins

Now that Apple's giving away cases for your iPhone, you're going to really have to go off the beaten path to find something that gives your phone a more original look than the standard neon bumper. Enter these classy wooden skins sold by KARVT, which not only separate your iPhone from the crowd but also look pretty darn good (if you ask me). And I was surprised at the prices, too; the iPhone 4 cases are only US $25 (with pre-orders going on right now), and the iPhone 3GS cases are $14 (I guess because they're clearing them out). I can't vouch for the quality at all, and the wood looks pretty thin, so it's probably not quite as durable as the rubber bumpers that you get for free. But as long as you're careful with it, I think it's a pretty good look at a more than reasonable price. [via Macsimum News]

As per tradition, tonight you can chat with TUAW bloggers and hopefully some of the usual Mac suspects at 4pm Hawaiian/7pm Pacific/10pm Eastern time. Those usual suspects will include me, your host for the evening. We'll have some iMac things (or lack of things) on the agenda, the impending free case bonanza, and you'll have things you'll want to talk about. I. Will. Too. Remember: West Coast Host means you also get an opportunity to join in on the infamous (unrecorded) Aftershow. Prepare to answer the ultimate question, "Caller -- what are you wearing?" Your calls and questions help us make the show the best it can be, otherwise I'm just talking to myself! To participate on TalkShoe, you can use the browser-only client, the embedded Facebook app, or the classic TalkShoe Pro Java client; however, for maximum fun, you should call in. For the web UI, just click the "TalkShoe Web" button on our profile page at 4 HI/7 PDT/10 pm EDT Sunday. To call in on regular phone or VoIP lines (yay for free cellphone weekend minutes!): dial (724) 444-7444 and enter our talkcast ID, 45077 -- during the call, you can request to talk by keying in *8. If you've got a headset or microphone handy on your Mac, you can connect via the free Gizmo or X-Lite SIP clients; basic instructions are here. Talk with you then!

  • Apple begins bumper refund program and free orders

In last week's press conference held about iPhone 4 reception issues*, Apple made mention of distributing not only bumpers for iPhones going forward, but refunds to those who had already purchased bumpers or other iPhone 4 cases. So if you didn't get one before they were pulled from Apple stores, progress is being made. A number of tipsters have written in to let us know they received email from Apple this evening about their refunds being processed. Read the whole thing after the break. We've heard of the "Cash For Clunkers" program, but what would you call this one? "Bucks for Bumpers"? "Ante For Antennagate"? Leave your best answer in the comments. Update: the page on Apple.com is now available. To claim your free case, you will need to download an app.

  • Apple starts refunding Bumper purchases automagically

Automatic refunds, or so the email says. We've been on the receiving end of a deluge of tips this morning pointing out that Apple has begun funneling cash back into its users' pockets -- a most unusual event, to be sure -- to live up to its retroactive promise of free Bumpers for all (who buy their iPhone 4 before September 30). If the particular wording is to be trusted, that should mean that even those who haven't yet bothered to put in a claim, but did purchase a Bumper, will find themselves enriched in due course. Apple estimates this bandaid solution to its antenna problems will cost $175 million in real cash money, but we suspect the biggest price to pay will be in the form of pride and reputation. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

  • Apple offers free case as iPhone 4 fix

Steve Jobs just announced today that the company will issue a free case to every iPhone 4 purchased through September 30. If you've already purchased a bumper case for your iPhone 4, you are entitled to a refund. You can apply for the free case through Apple's web site starting late next week. The company plans to source cases from third parties due to a shortage in bumper cases, so iPhone 4 customers will have a choice of a few different cases. If you are still not satisfied with the iPhone, you can return it for a full refund within 30 days of your purchase. Steve Jobs said plainly about the decision that "we want to make everyone happy, and if we can't make you happy we'll give you a full refund." The move comes three weeks and a day after the first customers began taking their new iPhones home and experiencing both antenna and proximity sensor issues. The growing backlash against Apple escalated earlier this week after Consumer Reports said they would not recommend the device, even though it comes in at the top of their smartphone ratings. This was followed by rumors of a possible recall, posts being pulled down from the Apple forums and finally today's conference. Edit (2:25 p.m. ET): Jobs acknowledged that the case offer will be international.

  • Apple to give away free cases to iPhone 4 users

Apple's not really ready to say it's sorry about the iPhone 4 antenna design, but it is willing to give all you darn squeaky wheels free cases for your trouble. Since Apple can't build its own Bumpers fast enough, it will give you a few options and let you decide, then send it your way for free as long as you purchased the phone before September 30th. Not good enough for you? Well, if you already bought a bumper from Apple you'll get a refund, and you can also return your phone for a full refund within 30 days as long as it's unharmed. This solution comes at the end of 22 days of Apple engineers "working their butts off," according to Steve, with "physics" ultimately being pinned as the main culprit. Apple claims you can replicate the left-handed "death grip" bar-dropping problem on the BlackBerry Bold 9700, HTC Droid Eris, and Samsung Omnia II, and that "phones aren't perfect." Steve also claims that only 0.55% of people who bought the iPhone 4 have called into AppleCare to complain about the antenna, and the phone has a 1.7% return rate at AT&T, compared to 6% with the 3GS, though he would cop to a slight increase in dropped calls over the iPhone 3GS. For this Steve has what he confesses to be a pet theory: that 3GS users were using the case they had from the 3G, and therefore weren't met with the horrible reality of a naked, call dropping handset. Hence the free case solution, which will probably satisfy some, infuriate others, and never even blip onto the radar of many of the massive horde of consumers that's devoured this product in unprecedented numbers.Update: Our own Richard Lai just waltzed down to the Regent Street Apple Store in London with his iPhone Bumper receipt in hand. A few minutes later he left with cold, hard cash, and kept the Bumper to boot. Seems as if the refund effort is a go, at least over in the UK.Update 2: We've heard from several tipsters saying Apple no longer does Bumper refunds at its stores; customers will now have to make an online claim instead. Looks like we got super lucky.

Apple's rumored policy is to not give away the $29 bumpers to consumers, and DIY bumpers may not suit your style. So, how do you get the golden ticket, in this case the free bumper? It seems that documenting your case carefully and showing that you've performed all of the recommended fixes in advance of your Genius Bar appointment helps a lot. Click on the read more link below to see our suggestions on what you need to do to best represent yourself before heading off to the local Apple Store.

  • iPhone Bumpers also selling well

Here's a bit of a surprise. Checking on Apple's iPhone Bumpers, the iPhone 4 cases, we see that shipping is delayed for several colors. While black is listed as being available on June 24th, pink, white, orange and blue list July 2nd as their shipping dates. The green model won't ship until July 16th. Apple's iPad case also sold extremely well at launch, mostly because there weren't a lot of options and it was so convenient to add it to your purchase. We assume the same thing is happening here. The Bumpers reminded me of iPod Socks, which were kind of silly. But hey, what do I know? Apparently they're selling very well. Thanks, Joseph!

During an Apple keynote, it's almost impossible to catch all of the info flooding out of Moscone. One thing we did catch, and then had to search for, was something about "Bumpers." A quick look at the pages on the Apple Web site didn't seem to show anything until I scrolled to the bottom of the Tech Specs page. Lo and behold, there was a very short description of Bumpers. Available in six colors (white, black, blue, green, orange, or pink), Bumpers slip over the stainless steel edge of your iPhone 4. They come with metal buttons for volume and power and are made of a combo of rubber and molded plastic. This may explain why we've received several tips over the last few days from people saying that iPhone cases are being removed from the Apple Stores. Bumpers are Apple's first foray into the iPhone case business (a market that has been run by third parties so far), and it will be fascinating to see not only how they sell, but what the reaction will be from long-time case manufacturers.
